TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Rick Scott found himself on both sides of the fence Tuesday when he told a Tallahassee audience that he supports oil drilling in the Everglades, then hours later issued a clarification that he didn't mean "an expansion of drilling."
Scott's remarks to the Economics Club of Florida were prompted by an audience member who asked whether the governor agreed with Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann's call last week for oil drilling in the Everglades for "additional energy."
"You know we already have drilling in the Everglades. We already have oil wells in the Everglades,'' Scott replied. "There's a road in Naples called 'Oil Well Road,' so we already have oil drilling. We've had it since 1943.''
The comments unleashed immediate warnings from environmentalists, who have fought for decades to shield South Florida's crucial watershed from additional oil drilling as they attempt to restore the Everglades ecosystem.

Folk music icon Pete Seeger and actor Mark Ruffalo joined elected officials and environmental advocates in Albany, NY on Tuesday to warn that a new method of gas extraction is destructive, unpredictable, and a threat to public health.
Ruffalo, a Sullivan County resident who recently appeared in the film The Kids Are Alright, held up a jar of water from a Pennsylvania town where the method of hydraulic fracturing (or hydro-fracking, for short) has contaminated the water supply. He warned that New Yorkers could suffer the same fate unless the state legislature takes action in the coming days.
Seeger, a longtime environmental activist, composed a song about fracking for the event highlighting the similarities between natural gas extraction and oil drilling: “And when 'drill baby drill' turns to 'spill baby spill,' God’s counting on me - God's counting on you.”
Hydro-fracking is a dirty, dangerous method of extracting gas from underground rock by drilling a well in the rock and then pumping thousands of gallons of a toxic soup of chemicals into the rock to create fissures that release the gas trapped inside.
Many companies are seeking to ramp up gas production by starting hydro-fracking operations in NY state this year.
Hydro-fracking has contaminated water across the country from Pennsylvania to Colorado and its effects are the subject of the new documentary GASLAND.
NY's Dept of Environmental Conservation holds the authority to grant permits to oil and gas companies. The Dept has stated that it plans to allow hydro-fracking to begin despite pressure from a massive grassroots campaign has been waged across the state to "kill the drill."
One grassroots organization that has decided to fight the oil and gas industry on hydro-fracking on the national level is Frack Action.

Palin's "drill, baby, drill" mantra part of Fox's pro-offshore drilling endorsement
Palin: "[L]et's drill, baby, drill, not stall, baby, stall." On the April 14 edition of On the Record, host Greta Van Susteren aired footage of Fox News contributor Sarah Palin giving a speech at a tea party event, in which she repeated the "drill, baby, drill" mantra she first voiced during the 2008 presidential campaign, saying: "We can pave the way for proven conventional sources of energy, resource development with nuclear and clean coal technology and on and offshore drilling. Because remember that energy in America is security for America. So, yeah, let's drill, baby, drill, not stall, baby, stall."
Hannity: "We don't need to explore, we need to drill, baby, drill." On the April 1 edition of his show, Sean Hannity said, "We've got the oil reserves in Alaska. We've got them off the coast of Florida. We've got them off the coast in California. We've got them in the Gulf. We know where the oil is. We don't need to explore, we need to drill, baby, drill." Hannity later said, "Drilling would be conducted in an environmentally sensitive manner."
Beck repeatedly touted offshore drilling
Beck: "If you really cared about the environment, you would let us drill for our own oil." On the September 2, 2008, edition of his CNN Headline News show, Glenn Beck said, "I got news for the greenies. If you really cared about the environment, you would let us drill for our own oil," adding: "It appears to me that the oil companies are doing a better job protecting the ocean and the fishes and the Gulf of Mexico than the local, state, and federal government are having at protecting people in our cities."
Beck applauds Bush for removing the "antiquated" "executive ban on offshore drilling." On the July 14, 2008, edition of his CNN Headline News show, Beck noted President Bush's removing of "the executive ban on offshore drilling," adding: "Welcome to the party, George. This is a ban that was as antiquated as it is idiotic. Unfortunately, no more oil is going to flow, from the Atlantic, at least, until Congress does the same thing and lifts their ban as well."
Beck: "We have to ramp up domestic offshore drilling." From the May 12, 2008, edition of his show, Beck said, "We have to ramp up domestic offshore drilling, even off the coast of billionaire vacation spots like South Florida, California, and my favorite, Cape Cod." Beck also said: "So tonight, America, here's what you need to know. Until we get a president and Congress with vision -- or really, I'll just settle for one with a clue -- we need temporary energy solutions, and aggressive drilling in the United States is one of them."
Beck on environmental opposition to offshore drilling: "Go make it with a tree all you want. I'm looking for oil." On the May 8, 2008, edition of his show, Beck said: "Norway, Canada, chock full of tree huggers, and they both have allowed offshore drilling for years. China, Cuba, virtually drilling in our own backyard, right off the coast of Florida. Yet, 85 percent of our own coastal waters, along with ANWR, are completely off limits, because we might hurt the bucktooth beaver or a caribou or whatever the hell they're complaining about now. What is it going to take before you are finally pissed of enough to tell these environmentalists, you know what? Go make it with a tree all you want. I'm looking for oil."
Gingrich: "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less"
Gingrich literally wrote the book on oil drilling advocacy. Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich is the author of Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less: A handbook for slashing gas prices and solving our energy crisis (Regnery Press, 2008). In the book, Gingrich writes, "There is perhaps no better example of the disconnect between your government and you than the ban on offshore oil and gas drilling. According to Gingrich, "every year that this ban remains in place is another year that Americans will needlessly pay high gas prices, with much of the profits going to foreign dictatorships." [Page 14]
Gingrich organization campaign promotes drilling. Americans Solutions for Winning the Future, of which Gingrich is General Chairman, has a "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less" campaign. The campaign features a petition calling on Congress to "act immediately to lower gasoline prices (and diesel and other fuel prices)* by authorizing the exploration of proven energy reserves to reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources from unstable countries."
Other Fox figures also call for increased offshore drilling
Kristol: "We would like more drilling in Virginia." On the February 14 edition of Fox News Sunday, panelist William Kristol responded to Juan Williams statement that "when it comes to drilling offshore, you go talk to the people who live off the shore of Florida; do they want more drilling? Do the people in North Carolina want the Outer Banks covered in black oil? I don't think so," by saying, "People in Virginia just elected a governor running for governor on the -- on the platform of more drilling offshore in Virginia, so we would like more drilling in Virginia."
Cavuto: Offshore drilling "yields demonstrable results and fairly quickly." On the May 27, 2009, edition of Your World, host Neil Cavuto discussed "eco-entrepeneur" Howard Gould's proposal to paint roofs white as a way to save energy. Cavuto said he wanted to throw offshore drilling "in the mix" of energy proposals, adding, "It is just as nutty as painting a roof white, right?" When Gould noted that "Putting an offshore drilling platform is not necessarily low-hanging fruit. I mean, that is a pretty expensive proposition," Cavuto responded, "But it yields demonstrable results and fairly quickly."This blog is just a goldmine of unbelievable stupidity. May 1, 2010. Exxon Valdez Surpassed today. Of course mainstream media will not provide this data until much later. The government and media are denial of the magnitude of this situation.
What we are witnessing is the worst environmental tragedy in U.S. History. As I've watched the news play out with the U.S. Coast guard using words such as MODERATE, we now find out that this is HUGE. In the coming days we will see the effects as people with video cameras show the world what happens when we continue to suck the earth dry of oil. SKYTRUTH has the most accurate news as well as synchronicity of current events which have happened recently one being senate hearings on off shore oil well drilling. Prepared to be shocked by the hubris and stupidity of mankind. We will never learn, and we just do not read the signs very well. We are like blind monkeys driving down the road.
SKYTRUTH http://blog.skytruth.org/2010/04/gulf-oil-spill-bigger-than-exxon-valdez.html
The Irony in all of this or should we say the MIRRORED reflection we as humans just refuse to look at.
It is now one week after the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill could surpass by next week the size of the 1969 Santa Barbara spill that was instrumental in Earth Day's creation. Senator Gaylord Nelson flew over the Santa Barbara oil spill in 1969 before deciding to lead a Senate campaign to create the environmental holiday. The key here is that this rig SANK on Earth Day. What more do we need to SEE?May 1, 2010. Exxon Valdez Surpassed today. Of course mainstream media will not provide... more

Report shows US oil refineries have bad safety record as blast kills 4 in Washington state
An overnight fire and explosion at the refinery killed at least four people who were working at the plant. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)
(AP)U.S. oil refineries have an ongoing problem with accidents that turn deadly, losing four times as much money from such incidents than refineries in the rest of the world, according to an insurance company report obtained Friday by The Associated Press.
The problem is highlighted by a deadly string of explosions, including one that killed four people Friday at a Tesoro Corp. refinery in Washington state, federal officials said.
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=10274207
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration got so worried that in 2007 it started a major push for safety inspection in refineries and found more than 1,000 workplace violations in the industry.
"If the aviation industry were having the same number of significant serious accidents as the refinery industry was having you probably wouldn't see people flying too much," Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board chairman John Bresland told The Associated Press Friday.
The internal insurance report, given to federal safety regulators two years ago but never publicized, was all too familiar to Bresland's agency, which said Friday's deadly explosion revives concerns there's something terribly wrong with the industry.
The board, which makes nonbinding recommendations, oversees investigations on accidents in 150 refineries in the United States and tens of thousands of chemical plants. But about half of the outstanding investigations are of accidents at refineries, officials said.
The cause of Friday's blast at the Tesoro refinery in Anacortes, about 70 miles north of Seattle on Puget Sound, was under investigation. The blaze started during maintenance work on a unit that processes highly flammable liquid derived during the refining process, the company said.
Six investigators with the chemical safety board were dispatched to the scene. Tesoro, based in San Antonio, was fined $85,700 last April for 17 serious safety and health violations at the plant.

Salazar said at a media briefing that 17 parcels were approved for drilling and eight rejected. But no decision has been made on the fate of the majority of the disputed lands – 52 parcels totaling 69,373 acres. He said more work needs to be done to determine if those lands qualify for oil and gas leasing.
The Bush administration's decision to offer the land for drilling drew fire from environmentalists and historic preservationists who said drilling might harm nearby parks and other protected lands.

.....when Costa Rica put one minister in charge of energy and environment, “it created a very different way of thinking about how to solve problems,” said Rodríguez, now a regional vice president for Conservation International. “The environment sector was able to influence the energy choices by saying: ‘Look, if you want cheap energy, the cheapest energy in the long-run is renewable energy. So let’s not think just about the next six months; let’s think out 25 years.’ ”

After reading this I am thoroughly convinced that she IS everything that is currently wrong with the world.
The federal government on Friday placed beluga whales that live in Cook Inlet in Alaska on the endangered species list, rejecting efforts by Gov. Sarah Palin and others against increased protection.
The relatively small, whitish whales, sometimes visible from downtown Anchorage, declined by almost 50 percent in the late 1990s, and federal scientists say they have not rebounded despite a series of protections, including a halt to subsistence hunting by Alaska Natives. About 375 whales have been counted in Cook Inlet each of the last two years, according to scientists with the National Marine Fisheries Service.

“Drill Baby Drill:” Scary words from Sarah Palin, the “Energy Expert”
You might have paused a moment last month when John McCain said that Sarah Palin knows “more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America.”
Really? More than T. Boone Pickens? More than Brian Schweitzer?
Research into that claim reveals that Sarah Palin was not entirely misleading when she stated that energy policy is her “area of expertise.” She is the only candidate with bona fide energy experience. Her understanding of domestic energy policy, however, has been vastly overstated. Furthermore, following her prescription for energy “independence,” given her bias towards oil, would inevitably result in an even greater dependence on the dwindling resource.
Palin served as Chairwoman for 11 months on the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, a board that regulates oil-field production in Alaska. She is often credited with changing the rules on “Big Oil” in Alaska, which garnered high approval ratings and a proud “maverick” designation.
For decades, large oil companies have sat on vast natural gas reserves in northern Alaska. Oil is more profitable than gas, however, so the companies are not in any hurry to tap into their gas resources and build necessary transport infrastructure.
Alaskans, on the other hand, are eager to see a natural gas pipeline built. During Palin’s gubernatorial campaign, she championed an “all-Alaska” pipeline, which would have opened opportunities to build the pipeline without having to wait for oil companies to act.
After her election, pragmatic changes in the project had to be made.
TransCanada is exploring building the pipeline, planning to eventually complete the project in about 10 years. The company would charge producers a tariff.
Several problems have arisen since guaranteeing $500 million in public money to TransCanada for the project, the largest of which is that no clients have signed on to use the pipeline. In fact, the three largest oil producers in the state – BP, ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil – have already said they will not use the pipeline, preferring instead to invest in their own...
