David Maisel ... Library of Dust depicts individual copper canisters, each containing the cremated remains of patient from a state-run psychiatric hospital. The patients died at the hospital between 1883 (the year the facility opened, when it was called the Oregon State Insane Asylum) and the 1970’s; their bodies have remained unclaimed by their families. The approximately 3,500 copper canisters have a handmade quality; they are at turns burnished or dull; corrosion blooms wildly from the leaden seams and across the surfaces of many of the cans. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/section-blog/43016-library-of-dustDavid Maisel ... These fairly freaky historical remains can be found lurking in dark corners of Buddhist temples and museums across Japan. Known as monster mummies, they are, in fact, the preserved remains of demons, mermaids, kappa, tengu and raijū. Or should I say things that people thought were demons, mermaids, kappa, tengu and raijū. They are not pretty, but they are really fascinating. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/bizzareweird/42940-japan-monster-mummiesThese fairly freaky historical remains can be found lurking in dark corners of... more

Dutch designer Wieke Somers examines the current state of affairs in design and the notion of objects having a second-life as we, as consumers, try to decide what is necessary in the 21st century. Her project “Consume or Conserve” demonstrates how human ashes can be recycled into new items through 3D printing and rapid prototyping technology, giving that person a second life as a piece of art or some other object.

Researchers have discovered stone tools in Norfolk, UK, that suggest that early humans arrived in Britain nearly a million years ago - or even earlier.
The find, published in the journal Nature, pushes back the arrival of the first humans in what is now the UK by several hundred thousand years.
Environmental data suggests that temperatures were relatively cool.
This raises the possibility that these early Britons may have been among the first humans to use fire to keep warm.
They may also have been some of the earliest humans to wear fur clothing.

These aren’t your standard number two pencils. Created by Nadine Jarvis, these pencils are made using carbon from cremated human remains. Each pencil is foil stamped with the name of the deceased and only one pencil can be removed from its container at a time. The pencil is then sharpened back into the box, leaving the sharpenings to occupy the space left by used pencils.

Dr. Berger used Google Earth technology to map identified caves and fossil deposits and to discover new caves via satellite imagery: “With the help of the navigation facility and high-resolution satellite imagery in Google Earth, Professor Berger went on to find almost 500 previously unidentified caves and fossil sites, even though the area is one of the most explored in Africa. One of these fossil sites yielded the remarkable discovery of a new species, Australopithecus sediba. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/your-details/296-with-the-help-of-google-earth-new-hominid-species-discovered-in-south-africaDr. Berger used Google Earth technology to map identified caves and fossil deposits... more

(CNN) -- Investigators recovered the remains of more than 500 animals after executing a search warrant Wednesday at a home in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, according to the city's chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The group's director of law enforcement said he believes the animals -- the majority of which were chickens -- were sacrificed as part of a Santeria religious ritual.
The animals included "dozens of sheep, goats ... every type of farm animal you can think of," the Philadelphia SPCA's law enforcement director, George Bengal, said.

Bronze weapons, a silver bracelet, an earring and hundreds of human bones found in the vast desolate wilderness of the Sahara desert have raised hopes of finally finding the lost army of Persian King Cambyses II. The 50,000 warriors were said to be buried by a cataclysmic sandstorm in 525 B.C.
"We have found the first archaeological evidence of a story reported by the Greek historian Herodotus," Dario Del Bufalo, a member of the expedition from the University of Lecce, told Discovery News.50,000 soldiers believed buried by a cataclysmic sandstorm in 525 B.C

The remains of a 9,000 year old mother and child, dug up in Israel, are believed to be the earliest human evidence that TB existed.
The bones were excavated from Alit-Yam, which is an ancient Neolithic village near Haifa, which has been submerged in the Mediterranean for thousands of years.
Experts at The University College London and Tel-Aviv have used DNA technology to confirm the bacteria.
There has been other evidence that suggest TB was around 500,000 years ago but this has not been proven. The remains of a 9,000 year old mother and child, dug up in Israel, are believed to be... more
