In memory of Anna Politkovskaya, we propose on our web magazine (www.brightmag.org) a small contribution to the priceless commitment of the Russian journalist killed four years ago, on October 7, 2006.
The anniversary of Anna's assassination is an admonition to us all not to forget that within the territories of one the greatest world powers lays a long series of human rights violations, hidden murders, unheard voices and unspeakable truths whose thick bricks only a few try to break. In memory of Anna Politkovskaya, we propose on our web magazine (www.brightmag.org) a... more

Novaya Gazeta’s web site was paralyzed by a hacker attack for a sixth day Sunday in what editors called the strongest assault ever to hit the opposition newspaper’s online edition.
The denial of service attack started HackerTuesday morning and peaked Thursday when the site recorded 1.5 million visits per second, said Sergei Asriyants, the newspaper’s web editor.
“We had hacker attacks before but never as strong as this,” he told The Moscow Times. The attack was weaker Friday but still too strong for the newspaper’s server, he said.
Novaya Gazeta’s stories continue to appear online on the paper’s live journal site at Novayagazeta.livejournal.com. Asriyants could not say where the attack had originated or who was behind it but acknowledged that it was well organized.
“The only thing I can say is that this is not the job of amateurs,” he said.Novaya Gazeta’s web site was paralyzed by a hacker attack for a sixth day Sunday... more

(CNN) -- A Moscow court has opened a preliminary hearing Monday in the trial of three men accused of being involved in a plot to murder Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
Politkovskaya, a Kremlin critic, was shot dead outside her home in the Russian capital on 7 October, 2006.
Prosecutors say the man accused of pulling the trigger, Rustam Makhmudov, has fled the country, The Associated Press reported. The suspects being tried on murder charges are Sergei Khadzhikurbanov -- a former Moscow police officer -- and Makhmudov's brothers, Ibragim and Dzhabrail.
Politkovskaya came to prominence internationally for exposing the brutality of Russian forces and human rights abuses in Chechnya -- extremely embarrassing for former president, and now prime minister, Vladimir Putin.
In 2004, she was a joint winner of the Olof Palme Prize for human rights work.
Her death was described by media reports in Russia at the time as a contract-style killing. A CCTV camera captured a man in a white baseball cap entering the building a few moments before she was shot three times in the chest and once in the head.(CNN) -- A Moscow court has opened a preliminary hearing Monday in the trial of three... more

The lawyer representing the family of Anna Politkovskaya, the murdered Russian journalist, was recovering from an apparent attempt to poison her as the trial opened today of three men accused of involvement in the killing.
A judge in Moscow rejected a request to postpone the preliminary hearing because Karinna Moskalenko was ill in France, where police are investigating the discovery of a large quantity of mercury in her car.
Ms Moskalenko also represents Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the jailed former Yukos founder, who is appealing againts a refusal to release him on parole after serving more than half of an eight-year prison sentence for fraud.
She told The Times that her husband had found large numbers of silvery metal globules under the seat of her car on Sunday, almost exactly two years after Mrs Politkovskaya’s death. She was waiting for the results of police tests to confirm whether she had been poisoned with mercury.
“The machinery of the state is probably now so angry with my activities, but I still don’t know whether we have grounds to link this to my work. I don’t know if it is a demonstrative act to threaten me,” she said from her home in Strasbourg.
“I am quite weak now and have been sick since Friday. I am really angry that I could not come to the Politkovskaya case, I was effectively prevented from coming.” The discovery has prompted speculation that she could have been the target of an attempt to silence her over the case. Exposure to high levels of mercury can damage the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, immune and nervous systems.
Mrs Politkovskaya was a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin, then the President, and was killed on his birthday in October 2006 by a gunman outside her home. Mr Putin has denied any state involvement in the killing.
