MSNBC says to reinstate Olbermann Tuesday night
By the CNN Wire Staff

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
* He was suspended for donating to three Democrats seeking federal office
* The contributions violate NBC policy
* Olbermann's show, "Countdown," has been a staple of MSNBC's prime-time programming
(CNN) -- Prime-time host Keith Olbermann, who was suspended for violating the ethics policy of his employer, will be back on air Tuesday night, the president of MSNBC said Sunday.
Olbermann was suspended Friday after a news report by Politico revealed he had donated to three Democrats seeking federal office.
"After several days of deliberation and discussion, I have determined that suspending Keith through and including Monday night's program is an appropriate punishment for his violation of our policy. We look forward to having him back on the air Tuesday night," Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC said in a statement.
Olbermann gave $2,400 -- the maximum individual amount allowed -- to each of the campaigns of Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway, and Arizona Reps. Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords.
Conway lost his bid, while Grijalva and Giffords eked out wins.
The contributions violated an NBC policy that requires employees of the news organization to obtain permission ahead of any political donations or activities that could be deemed as a conflict of interest.
In what was apparently his first public comment since his suspension was announced, Olbermann wrote Sunday on his Twitter page: "Greetings From Exile! A quick, overwhelmed, stunned THANK YOU for support that feels like a global hug & obviously left me tweetless XO."
His comment was posted prior to Griffin's statement.

WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee's $5.5 million in July receipts includes a $900,000 insurance payment, helping boost anemic fundraising by the national party.
Federal campaign reports show that Democratic Party committees maintained a cash on hand advantage over their Republican counterparts as they entered the final three months before the election.
The Republican Party's insurance payment was from Illinois National Insurance, a subsidiary of insurance giant American International Group. A party official said the money was for an insurance claim but said there was a confidentiality provision in the agreement. The official was not authorized to discuss the claim publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The official said the payment was not related to AIG's financial troubles, which required a massive federal bailout.
Even with the claim, the RNC's receipts were less than half the $11.6 million raised by the Democrats. The Democratic Party reported $10.8 million in the bank and $3.5 million in debts; Republicans showed $5.3 million in the banks and $2.2 million in debts.
The RNC is by far the GOP committee struggling the most, creating anxiety among Republican operatives and increasing pressure on outside groups to help make up the financial gap.
The National Republican Congressional Committee raised $8.5 million to help House candidates, surpassing the $6.2 million raised by its Democratic counterpart. But the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee showed $35.8 million in the bank compared to $22 million for the NRCC.
The two parties' senatorial committees were closer to parity. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee raised $4.4 million and had $22.4 million in the bank. The National Republican Senatorial Committee raised nearly $4.2 million and had $21.2 million in the bank.

Washington, D.C. — Citizens United and its president, David Bossie, today issued the following statement:
“Citizens United (CU), and its President David Bossie, have retained counsel to pursue claims against CNN for reporting in a November 28th CNN show called Broken Government – ‘Campaign Killers,’ hosted by Campbell Brown, that David Bossie and CU were part of a ‘fringe militia.’ CU through counsel will seek a formal apology and public retraction of those statements, and for calling Bossie a ‘dirty trickster.’ If no retraction is forthcoming, CU will then bring legal action to hold CNN accountable for these and other misrepresented facts. These baseless allegations were a disservice to CU and its 500,000 members, CNN and its audience, and to general principles of responsible, fact-based journalism.”

John McCain's road to the Nov. 4 presidential election has been long and winding -- and now his path to the White House is looking increasingly narrow.
With 17 days before Americans vote, McCain is being forced to spend most of his campaign time defending home turf -- states that voted Republican in 2004 -- against recent gains made by Barack Obama.
The Arizona senator, meantime, is facing bleak polls showing his campaign trailing in every state won by Democrat John Kerry in 2004.
The upshot? McCain likely needs to win every one of several hotly-contested "red state" battlegrounds -- including Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Virginia, Missouri, North Carolina and Indiana -- to reach the 270 electoral college votes needed to become president.
In all those states except Indiana, state poll averages currently show Obama with either a narrow or statistically significant lead.
"McCain has to draw an inside straight, which is still possible, but extremely unlikely," says John White, a politics professor at Catholic University in Washington.
"It's like climbing Mount Everest. It's a very steep road."
McCain has trailed Obama in most national polls since the third week of September, when the White House announced emergency plans for a $700-billion bailout of troubled Wall Street banks.
But the national polls are useful only as a barometer of the country's mood, since the president is chosen by 538 electoral college voters allotted based on results from the 50 U.S. states and District of Columbia.John McCain's road to the Nov. 4 presidential election has been long and winding... more
