Every August, during the Fêtes de Genève (Geneva Festival), there is a major fireworks display over the lake. People flock from all over the world, and there are almost a million people in town to watch the fireworks - Geneva's population is only about 200,000 so you can imagine the crowd... Rather than going down among the huge crowd, I go to the rooftop of the building adjacent to mine to watch the display. About a dozen or so people from that building and mine know about this possibility - the rooftop is a large flat terrace with penthouse studios for artists - so we are never a crowd up there. We bring drinks and food and folding chairs, and sit down to enjoy the spectacle. I made this video last year, this year I was unwell and missed going up to the rooftop to watch the show.
The rooftop is a few miles distant from the lake, which is why the fireworks seem small.
For many years until his death in 2000, the world's foremost pyrotechnics master - Giovanni Panzera from Italy - composed the fireworks for the Geneva Festival.

When I was a child, my mother, who worked at the UN, would get us tickets for the large paddle boat (it is a bit like the famous Mississippi steam paddle boats) which the UN charters every year for UN staff. There is a restaurant, and a band playing for people to dance after the fireworks show. Seeing the fireworks from the vantage of that boat on the lake is an extraordinary and unforgettable experience as the boat drops anchor in the middle of the Geneva bay close to the fireworks.

The fireworks are synchronized with music, with large loudspeakers relaying the music around the lakeside. It is also played on a radio station, but I didn't know which one and have no small portable radio that I could bring to the rooftop with me so as to get the music as well as the display.
