This is also official confirmation that Sony is moving forward on making Men in Black 3, eyeing a start date in 2010 that "could go as soon as the spring." THR's Risky Biz Blog reports that Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen has been hired to write the script. Word is that Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two, might be back. Thought they're unsure whether Will Smith will return or not, even though the buzz is that he's apparently interested and doesn't have another "go" movie lined up anyway. I'd hope they don't decide to make this without him, as it just wouldn't be the same. Tommy Lee Jones' involvement is also uncertain.
The studio is mum on what MiB3 may actually be about, but I do hope they avoid the usual pitfall of making the original young upstart a veteran who must then train more young blood. (I’m also saying this because I’m hoping we won’t get a chance to see Shia LaBeouf as a bumbling young agent.)
Cohen’s involvement with the film is a sign that it will probably be better than the disappointing Men in Black sequel. He’s a graduate of the Mike Judge school of comedy—having worked on Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill, in addition to Idiocracy. In my book, that’s good people. This is also official confirmation that Sony is moving forward on making Men in Black... more

Workmen near Washington DC have to be very careful when digging. There's the usual hazards that construction crews face in cities and towns around the world but then there's the unusual.
See, the utility companies usually have maps of where their cables and pipes go. These maps are useful when a water company needs to dig up the road to fix a leak. Or, a construction company needs to do groundwork for a new building. Some things underground don't belong to any utility and aren't on any map.
In Tysons Corner, Virginia, three black SUVs turned up and half a dozen guys in suits got out of them just moments after a construction crew hit a fibre-optic cable - with one saying "You just hit our line".
The construction company assumed they'd hit a "black" wire, a secure communications line used by the US government. See, you don't ask questions about these things - you answer them!
This particular incident happened a few years back, so why in the Washington Post now? The Washington subway system is being expanded and these "black" lines are beginning to pose an even bigger problem:
"Black wire is one of the looming perils of the massive construction that has come to Tysons, where miles and miles of secure lines are thought to serve such nearby agencies as the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the National Counterterrorism Center and, a few miles away in McLean, the Central Intelligence Agency. After decades spent cutting through red tape to begin work on a Metrorail extension and the widening of the Capital Beltway, crews are now stirring up tons of dirt where the black lines are located."Workmen near Washington DC have to be very careful when digging. It sounds like science fiction, by scientists say it might one day be possible to erase undesirable memories from the brain, selectively and safely.
Using a complex genetic approach, U.S. and Chinese researchers believe they have done just that in mice, but the feat is far from being tested on humans.
Study co-author Joe Z. Tsien, co-director of the Brain & Behavior Discovery Institute at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, says the "work reveals a molecular mechanism of how [memory deletion] can be done quickly and without doing damage to brain cells."
The finding is published in the Oct. 23 issue of Neuron.

LONDON (Reuters) Two U.S. fighter planes were scrambled and ordered to shoot down an unidentified flying object (UFO) over the English countryside during the Cold War, according to secret files made public on Monday.
One pilot said he was seconds away from firing 24 rockets at the object, which moved erratically and gave a radar reading like "a flying aircraft carrier."
The pilot, Milton Torres, now 77 and living in Miami, said it spent periods motionless in the sky before reaching estimated speeds of more than 7,600 mph (12,000 kph).
After the alert, a shadowy figure told Torres he must never talk about the incident and he duly kept silent for more than 30 years.
His story was among dozens of UFO sightings in defence ministry files released at the National Archives in London.
In a written account, Torres described how he scrambled his F-86 D Sabre jet in calm weather from the Royal Air Force base at Manston, Kent in May 1957.
"I was only a lieutenant and very much aware of the gravity of the situation. I felt very much like a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest," he said.
"The order came to fire a salvo of rockets at the UFO. The authentication was valid and I selected 24 rockets.
"I had a lock-on that had the proportions of a flying aircraft carrier," he added. "The larger the airplane, the easier the lock-on. This blip almost locked itself."
At the last moment, the object disappeared from the radar screen and the high-speed chase was called off.
He returned to base and was debriefed the next day by an unnamed man who "looked like a well-dressed IBM salesman."
"He threatened me with a national security breach if I breathed a word about it to anyone," he said.
The documents contain no official explanation for the incident, which came at a time of heightened tension between the West and the Soviet Union. Planes were on constant stand-by at British bases for a possible Soviet attack.
The files blame other UFO sightings on weather balloons, clouds or normal aircraft. Torres said he had been waiting 50 years for an explanation.
"I shall never forget it," he told the Times. "On that night I was ordered to open fire even before I had taken off. That had never happened before."
UFO expert David Clarke said the sighting may have been part of a secret U.S. project to create phantom aircraft on radar screens to test Soviet air defences.
"Perhaps what this pilot had seen was some kind of experiment in electronic warfare or maybe it was a UFO," he said. "Something very unusual happened."
