A bake and yard sale veteran, Falmouth, Maine, resident Carolyn Gillis decided to take school fundraising to a higher level. She founded, Classroom Classifieds (CC's) , a free Web site that generates money for schools from items that community members sell.
After years as a dedicated fundraiser for the Falmouth (Maine) Public Schools, Gillis decided she needed to think bigger than bake sales and yard sales. That's why she and other volunteers launched Classroom Classifieds, a virtual yard sale.
Community members list items they want to sell and the asking price, and sellers agree to donate any percentage (1-100%) of the sale price to their school group. They donate directly to their school group's donations page through a link on CC's web site.
Another similar site, Classifiedcircles.org, channels funds to environmental, preventive/ evidence-based health and other progressive charities.
The sites have recently been encouraged by Stanford Social Innovations Business experts as quite sound and ready for financing.A bake and yard sale veteran, Falmouth, Maine, resident Carolyn Gillis decided to take... more

Al Gore introduced a five point plan that “…would simultaneously move us toward solutions to the climate crisis and the economic crisis–and create millions of new jobs that cannot be outsourced,” at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. Gore claims that the two major crisis’s we currently face can be alleviated through the same steps:
1. Incentives for construction of concentrating solar-thermal power plants in the southwest, wind farms in the Midwest, and plants in geothermal “hot spots.”
2. A $400 billion investment over 10 years to build a “national smart grid” to distribute renewable energy.
3. Aid to automakers to convert to the production of plug-in hybrids. Smart-grid technology that enables the cars to be charged during off-peak hours.
4. A nationwide effort to retrofit buildings, which account for 40 percent of carbon dioxide emissions, to be more energy-efficient.
5. Climate regulations to cap carbon dioxide emissions.Al Gore introduced a five point plan that “…would simultaneously move us... more

In a joint meeting with Portland Green Streets, we will present ideas for overcoming the challenges of winter commuting, by bicycle as well as other green commuting options. In the bicycle group, we will discuss particulars of dressing for the cold, visibility and lighting for night riding, and winter care of the bicycle. And then the perennial debate: Should I get studded tires?
Walkers, cyclists, transit users, and carpoolers will start by sharing a general, multi-modal discussion of getting around green in the winter. And then we’ll break out into small groups to discuss mode-specific information and strategies.
We’ll have Nan Cumming from Portland Trails moderating the Walkers group, John Brooking from the Portland Bike Commuter Meetup convening the Cyclists, Sarah Cushman of Green Streets (who it turns out is a master-certified auto mechanic) moderating car maintenance & driving tips with the Carpoolers, and possibly City Councilor Kevin Donoghue convening the Transit Riders (bus, train, ferry) group!
Not sure you’re ready to commit to all winter? No problem. Even if you just want to see what the challenges are and how they might be met, this meeting should help to give you an idea of what it takes - and maybe, what’s not as hard as you might think. In a joint meeting with Portland Green Streets, we will present ideas for overcoming... more

Dear MoveOn member,
I know something about what can happen in close elections. And we've only got 8 days left to make sure this isn't one of them.
We are witnessing history in the making. Millions of young people are getting involved in politics for the first time. A leader named Barack Obama is rising up to unite America behind his vision of progressive change. Yet we know from 2000 that progress is not inevitable. Victory can fall just out of reach. And the difference of a few thousand votes can put our country on a decidedly different path.
That's why I'm writing to you today to personally ask you to volunteer with the Obama campaign to help get out the vote this week. Everything we've worked for together hangs in the balance in these next few days. The Obama office in Portland still needs more volunteers and I'm hoping you can help. Click here to sign up:

I know that MoveOn members have the power to swing elections. In 2006, you made over 7 million calls—I made some myself—and together we won back both houses of Congress. And already this year, nearly 120,000 of you have signed up to volunteer for Obama in battleground states.
But the stakes this year are too great for any of us to sit it out. We're facing two wars and an economic meltdown. The climate crisis, in particular, is worsening more quickly than predicted and without strong leadership from the next president, we could face consequences right out of a science fiction movie.
Barack Obama will provide that leadership. But only if we all make sure he wins. Please sign up to volunteer today.

Diana Levine - won a suit in a Vermont court four years ago against Wyeth Pharmaceuticals... After a routine drug injection left her disabled. The company appealed the ruling all the way up to the US Supreme Court... And some worry if Wyeth wins. Consumers could pay the price with their lives.
She speaks about her musical career in the past tense because that's when it was at its peak. It Happened eight years ago-- tragically and unexpectedly. it all started with a headache. Levine, who had suffered many migraines before, went to a nearby clinic.
Diana "I went in expecting treatment - which I got: Demerol for the pain, and Phenergan to curb the nausea that goes with the headache."
Phenergan is typically administered by intramuscular injection. But this time clinicians used a method called an "iv push"-- to send the drug directly into her vein and give her faster relief. The needle, however, penetrated her artery-- and gangrene set in over time. Doctors tried to save her arm.
But couldn't.
Diana "6 weeks later, 2 amputations later, I left Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital with no arm and no identity."
Levine got in touch with an attorney. And they started building a case - first, against the clinic, with whom she settled - and then against Wyeth pharmaceuticals, the maker of Phenergan.
In 2004 .. The case went to trial in Montpelier... And a jury awarded Levine almost 7-million dollars.
So far .. Levine has not seen a penny from Wyeth... She says she's still learning how to get by with one arm... Though doing the things she loves - making pottery, baking pies... And, of course, playing music - is much less fulfilling.
She heads into this potentially precedent-setting trial, she says, as one woman- with a universal story.
Diana"I'm trying to impress on people- I know you don't think it can happen to you - and maybe *this* won't - but something could - just as drastic, the result of a drug gone awry."
Diana: "It's almost like it's way bigger than me." The big picture is vastly more important- because I don't want this to happen to my daughter, my daughter's kids, friends of hers... and for her to be told 'Don't bother suing- remember Wyeth vs. Levine? Well, Levine lost, you're out of luck.'Diana Levine - won a suit in a Vermont court four years ago against Wyeth... more
