"Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has landed a deal to write a book in which he will focus on "the discussions, the considerations and the factors involved in picking" a U.S. Senate successor to Barack Obama, according to a press release from Blagojevich's publicity agency.

The news release said Blagojevich will expose the "dark side of politics" that he witnessed as a former congressman and governor.""Former Illinois Gov. "Sen. Dick Durbin urged Sen. Roland Burris on Tuesday to quit his job as the junior senator from Illinois, but the embattled senator has no plans of leaving the Senate.
In a private meeting that lasted nearly an hour, Durbin told Burris that the growing controversy over his appointment would make it difficult for him to continue serving in the Senate. Durbin also expressed disappointment that Burris did not reveal his extensive contacts and his fund raising efforts for the ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who appointed him to the seat on Dec. 30...""Sen. Dick Durbin urged Sen. Roland Burris on Tuesday to quit his job as the... more

"Like manna from heaven, comic material galore has been landing in the lap of Chicago's venerable Second City comedy troupe of late. First, the extended primary season involving the city's own Barack Obama fed the company's giddily funny take on politics in "Between Barack and a Hard Place." And then, after the election, when comedy usually gives way to seriousness (particularly in the midst of crisis), Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich stepped forward into the glorious comic spotlight to which only truly ridiculous politicians can ever aspire, and was caught on tape brashly attempting to sell Obama's senate seat.
"Rod Blagojevich Superstar!" is Second City's ripped-from-the-headlines, rushed-to-the-stage, ready-for-potential-touring parody. Combining the disgraced governor's grandiosity with the musical flavors of '70s rock operas like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar," the show probably has a limited audience of political junkies and a pretty short shelf life. But as an offshoot of the Obama storyline, with the potential of a trial to keep the story alive, this brief and breezy show may turn out to have greater legs than Roland Burris' senate career.""Like manna from heaven, comic material galore has been landing in the lap of... more

DETROIT — Chrysler LLC received its $4 billion low-interest federal loan Friday, helping the auto maker continue funding its operations.
“This initial loan will allow the company to continue an orderly restructuring, while pursuing our vision to build the fuel-efficient, high-quality cars and trucks people want to buy,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Nardelli in a statement.
Undisclosed issues in Chrysler’s application process slowed the payout, which was slated to be made by the end of December. General Motors Corp. received a loan payment of $4 billion on Wednesday and is scheduled to receive more money during the next two months.
Chrysler has been hurt more than GM and Ford Motor Co. by the U.S. recession because it relies on North America for about 90% of its sales. Tight credit and a weak economy are keeping consumers away from showrooms.

Right-wing flame thrower Ann Coulter blasts incoming First Lady Michelle Obama as a freakish Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis imitator in a book to be published next week.
In her latest screed, titled “Guilty: Liberal ‘Victims’ and their Assault on America,” Coulter accuses the liberal left of playing the victim when in fact, she argues, they are the victimizers.
As usual, Coulter throws plenty of bombs herself.
Lashing out at the President-elect’s wife, Coulter wrote, “Her obvious imitation of Jackie O’s style - the flipped-under hair, the sleeveless A-line dresses, the short strands of fake pearls - would have been laughable if done by anyone other than a media-designated saint.”
Coulter said Cindy McCain, the wife of vanquished GOP nominee John McCain, “dressed well without freakishly imitating famous First Ladies in history.”
Coulter facetiously and snidely refers to Michelle Obama as a “saint” and “Mother Teresa” and suggests that her public service career “advanced in lockstep with the political advancement of her husband.”
In the book, Coulter repeatedly refers to the President-elect as “B. Hussein Obama” and complains that the media “literally wanted to have sex with him.”
Can someone explain to me why Ann “I Really A Man” Coulter seems to think she’s still relevant? Who the hell cares what she thinks . You know folk are reaching when the only thing they can think to complain about is the fact that you dress like past First Ladies. Gosh no. Not that. I don’t know, Michelle Obama could be a drug addicted Stepford Wife who steals from her own charity to feed her prescription drug habit. Oh, it’s ok, he says…park the tank in front of the fire hydrant. We’re only going to be in there for a minute, they won’t tow us…
Israeli tanks and troops have launched a ground invasion to reoccupy parts of the northern Gaza strip as the military escalated its assault on the Palestinian enclave in an attempt to curb Hamas rocket attacks on Israel.
With Israel’s chief military spokesman warning that the attack would take “many long days”, the Israeli Cabinet also authorized the call of thousands more reservists. As Israeli tanks and infantry crossed into northern Gaza reports began to emerge of fighting between Hamas and Israeli troops. The invasion comes after Hamas warned Israeli forces entering Gaza faced a “black destiny” and vowed that they would be defeated.
Palestinian witnesses said a small column of military vehicles moved across the border firing tracer bullets after dark. The Israeli army said the assault is intended to take control of territory in the north of the Gaza strip from where Hamas fires its rockets.
“The objective is to destroy the Hamas terror infrastructure in the area of operations,” said a spokeswoman, Major Avital Leibovitch. “We are going to take some of the launch areas used by Hamas.”
However, Israel said this is not the start of a reoccupation of Gaza.Oh, it’s ok, he says…park the tank in front of the fire hydrant.... more

Like many of my fellow bloggers, I don’t have the credentials to argue the legal issues. I’m inclined to believe no matter what the constitution or case law says, if the Senate wants to keep Burris out, it can find the legal way to do it. Politically, on the other hand, I’m betting Burris gets sworn in. And Blagojevich — after providing plenty more fodder for the late night comics (who never doubted the pols would give them more material) — will walk. No conviction. No time. Maybe a plea and small fine.
When I was a much younger man I paid the rent for a lease-holding, unemployed roommate. When I found a better apartment and told the roommate, he changed the locks and locked me out in anger. When I had the superintendent let me in to gather my belongings, the roommate had me arrested for burglary. Hauled off from my place of employment, finger-printed, booked and released, I had to hire a lawyer and show up in court. Three times! The ex-roommate called in sick. On the third the case was thrown out. My only recourse was to file a civil suit that would cost more money and recover none. I walked away with a lesson learned: the law can be used as an ugly weapon.
Blagojevich’s evident glee at the press conference announcing Roland Burris and featuring Bobby Rush — the only person ever to defeat President-elect Barack Obama in any election for any office — reminds me of the evil genius of that long-ago roommate. I know nothing of Chicago politics but I knew something about NYC politics. It’s simply not out of the question that Blagojevich understood he could get a don’t “hang or lynch” Burris quote from a Bobby Rush. My problem with the pick has nothing to do with law or the constitution. My problem is it epitomizes old-school big-city racial politics at its worst. I hope Obama got a lot of R&R on that last vacation of his. This circumstance may be the least of his problems; but for his post-racial presidency it may be the most iconic.
Oh, and, btw, to those who say that Burris should have turned it down, I say right back to you that Charlie Rangel should have announced that he will not run again and saved everyone a whole lot of angst! Burris has nothing to lose!Like many of my fellow bloggers, I don’t have the credentials to argue the legal... more

In appointing Roland Burris to Barack Obama’s Senate seat, Rod Blagojevich seems determined to take the Democratic ship down with him. Democrats are now scrambling to block the former state attorney general’s appointment. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Illinois’ other senator, Dick Durbin, have made their opposition to Burris clear. The Democratic leadership issued a statement saying that anyone appointed by Blagojevich “will not be seated by the Democratic caucus.” However, the Supreme Court ruled in 1969 that the House could not block the appointment of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. so long as he met the constitutional requirements for age, citizenship, and residency. Politico also runs a brief profile of Burris, who was Illinois’ first black statewide elected official. The best detail about him? His two children are named Roland and Rolanda. In appointing Roland Burris to Barack Obama’s Senate seat, Rod Blagojevich seems... more
