“Life As We Know It” is a pleasant surprise.
It manages to easily overcome the poor expectations raised by a hackneyed plot. To wit:
The life of a super-yuppie is thrown into turmoil when she inherits a baby from a distant relative. Oops, I’m sorry. That was Diane Keaton in “Baby Boom.”
The life of a top chef changes when she becomes the guardian of her young niece. Oops! Once again, my bad. That was Catherine Zeta-Jones in “No Reservations.”
How about: after her sister and brother-in-law die in a car accident, a young woman becomes the guardian of their three children. I apologize again; my mistake. That was Kate Hudson in “Raising Helen.”“Life As We Know It” is a pleasant surprise.

Just because Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II says she wants to put some extra letters after your name doesn't mean you have to obey.
