In 1981 first time director Sam Raimi made a low-budget horror film called “The Evil Dead.” The inventive and shocking film became a genre classic as well as a massive financial success. And like all old, successful horror properties a remake was inevitable, its new red band trailer available at left. Produced and co-written by Raimi, the new “Evil Dead” is helmed by first time feature director Fede Alvarez focuses on a group of four vacationing young people who unwittingly unleash an ancient horror unto our world. As with most horror remakes the film looks quite atrocious. In 1981 first time director Sam Raimi made a low-budget horror film called “The... more

J.K. Simmons has only been given to us in small doses on screen -- Daily Bugle editor/publisher J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man movies, Aaron Eckhart's boss in Thank You for Smoking, Paul Rudd's dad Oswald in I Love You, Man, Ellen Page's dad Mac in Juno -- all roles where he got to play the scene-stealer. But with his latest film, The Music Never Stopped, Simmons is finally a leading man. As Henry Sawyer, Simmons is a father who lost his son 20 years ago, but tries to repair the relationship when Gabriel (played by Lou Taylor Pucci) ends up in the hospital, now brain-damaged. Thanks to a tumor that's since been removed, Gabriel is incapable of forming new long term memories and thinks he's still in 1968 (it's based on a case written about by Oliver Sacks, "The Last Hippie"). Gabriel's parents discover that music helps Gabriel stay lucid, recall and possibly even form memories, so Henry immerses himself in all the music that Gabriel loves -- and that Henry used to hate -- so they can connect. Simmons talks about playing dads, authority figures, and geezers.

So says the one-two combo of Nikki Finke and recent Variety transplant Michael Flemming.
According to a source of Finke's, director Sam Raimi finally pulled out after being unable to come to terms with the scripts coming his way for the fourth film. This comes after John Malkovich revealed he is attached--er, was attached--to be The Vulture.
Instead, Sony Pictures will reboot the entire franchise with "Jamie" (but I assume Finke meant James) Vanderbilt, who is attached to the mythical fifth and sixth Spider-Man scripts, as well as the original screenplay for the fourth film that Raimi hated.
Of course, that doesn't matter now--Raimi and the entire cast are removed and will be replaced. No more dance sequences after all.

In a surprise to someone nerds everywhere, it's looking more and more like Spider-Man 4 won't hit its' original May release date.
Nikki Finke runs the special effects email over on Deadline, which is essentially an apology due to no one being able to pin down the plot. While it appears that Raimi is adamant on John Malkovich as the villain (maybe even The Vulture), the delay all but confirms Anne Hatheway is dropping off from the rumored "Lady Vulture" role.
In the mean time, my dreams of an entire sequel related to James Franco's ghost having omelet parties will have to wait. Or will it?

Way back in 2006, Sam Raimi picked up the rights from Street and Smith Publications to bring the classic pulp comic The Shadow to the big screen again. As most of you know, The Shadow was originally brought to the big screen by Russell Mulcahy, and starring Alec Baldwin, back in 1994. But in January of this year, we reported a rumor saying that Raimi was interesting in potentially directing The Shadow, but that seemed like it would be unliekly. Now Latino Review is reporting that Fox has picked up The Shadow for around $1 million and Raimi is attaching David Slade, of 30 Days of Night and Eclipse, as director for the time being.

According to director Jacques Audiard's stunning new movie, A Prophet (Un Prophète), no one would wish to be in the shoes of Malik El Djebena (newcomer Tahar Rahim).
A low-level criminal serving a six-year prison sentence, he is at the mercy of the Darwinesque nightmare that is society behind bars, most particularly when he becomes the unwilling pawn of the jailed, Corsican mob boss, César Luciani (Niels Arestrup). As much as Malik tries to stay ahead of his situation -- using the paroles César has orchestrated as an opportunity to start his own drug-running operation, for instance -- fate, rival crooks, and the very smart César seek to intervene at every step.
It's a basic tenet of good storytelling that whatever plans your characters put into action, it can't hurt if things don't go quite as smoothly as anticipated. Sometimes, though, the brilliant, foolproof, fail-safe scheme that goes utterly and (oh boy!) horribly wrong is a story in itself. Moviemakers have taken good advantage of the irony, suspense, and drama to be had when a best-laid plan seriously "gangs agley," especially in these 10 gripping, and entertaining, examples:

A press release has confirmed today's funniest thing: the Spider-Man reboot will be in 3D. I can only imagine Sam Raimi is currently sitting in a room recreating this classic scene from Evil Dead 2 upon being told the news.
So, to update: Marc Webb will direct, there is no actor and just a writer.
Because this is just silly.
