"Quantum of Solace" comes out next month, and Daniel Craig is out promoting that and Barack Obama. He can't vote in America, but the British Craig has strong feelings anyway.
"I strongly feel there needs to be a new way forward," Craig tells Playboy magazine in an interview on newsstands today. "Barack Obama is pushing things in the right direction. I'm excited about the election. Unfortunately, things will probably get dirty. I hope Obama can stay above the fray ... I'm hopeful for the first time in a long, long while. It's one of the most exciting elections in my lifetime." "Quantum of Solace" comes out next month, and Daniel Craig is out promoting... more

Ed O'Neill, the actor who portrayed the embattled husband and father on "Married with Children" came to Youngstown, Ohio, to stump for the Democratic nominee.
O'Neill got a big welcome from the crowd at Youngstown State University, which had gathered to hear Sen. Hillary Clinton. "I haven't been here in 10 years," O'Neill said, 'and I usually don't get involved in politics."
Then he recalled growing up here, and urged a vote for Obama. The crowd in this working-class town loved it.Ed O'Neill, the actor who portrayed the embattled husband and father on... more

Leonardo DiCaprio is crossing his fingers for a US election win by Democrat Barack Obama and said Monday he believes the rest of the world is, too.
"I think it is the true ideals and dreams of America to have an African-American president named Barack Obama to be the representation of the United States at a time like this," said DiCaprio, in Paris as co-star of Middle-East themed movie "Body of Lies."
Obama, DiCaprio went on, is "a man that has great policies, a man that is a great intellectual, who knows what he's doing."
"I've my fingers crossed that he will win because I think he'll make some dramatic changes in our country that we're looking for, but the rest of the world is as well."Leonardo DiCaprio is crossing his fingers for a US election win by Democrat Barack... more

An e-mail to Minnesotans from the McCain-Palin campaign gets the state’s same-day voting requirements wrong. The Minnesota Independent’s Andy Birkey spotted the errors: The e-mail erroneously states that anyone registering at the polling place needs both an ID and a current bill, and it omits the option of having another voter from the same precinct vouch for you. An e-mail to Minnesotans from the McCain-Palin campaign gets the state’s... more

Election Eve Info "Dump"
It's fitting that the McCain-Palin campaign ends with a couple of politically motivated pretend nods to transparency.
First Sarah Palin's own personnel board released a report earlier this evening clearing her in the Trooper-Gate investigation. Nice timing.
Now Palin has released a letter from her personal physician proclaiming her to be in good health and fit to serve -- instead of releasing her medical records, which she'd promised to do days ago.
They see fit to do this on the night before the election?
(As a side note, the McCain camp press release is titled "GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN RELEASES MEDICAL HISTORY SUMMARY." But it appears all they released was that letter (.pdf). Over at The Page, that morphs into the headline: "PALIN RELEASES MEDICAL RECORDS." A letter becomes a summary becomes medical records.)

Optical-scan machines made by Election Systems & Software failed recent pre-election tests in a Michigan county, producing different tallies for the same ballots every time, the top election official in Oakland County revealed in a letter made public Monday.
The problems occurred during logic and accuracy tests in the run-up to this year's general election, Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson disclosed in a letter submitted October 24 (.pdf) to the federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC). The machines at issue are ES&S M-100 optical-scan machines, which read and tally election results from paper ballots.
Johnson worried that such problems -- linked tentatively to paper dust build-up in the machines -- could affect the integrity of the general election this week.
"The same ballots, run through the same machines, yielded different results each time," she wrote. "This begs the question -- on Election Day, will the record number of ballots going through the remaining tabulators leave even more build-up on the sensors, affecting machines that tested just fine initially? Could this additional build-up on voting tabulators that have not had any preventative maintenance skew vote totals? My understanding is that the problem could occur and election workers would have no inkling that ballots are being misread."
Tuesday's election is expected to be the busiest ever, and ES&S tabulators -- both touchscreen machines and optical-scan machines -- were responsible for counting 50 percent of the votes in the last four major U.S. elections, according to the company. The company's optical-scan machines are now deployed in 43 states.
Johnson, who could not be reached for comment, said that "four of our communities or eight percent" had reported inconsistent vote totals during the logic and accuracy tests with the ES&S machines. She also said that conflicting vote totals had surfaced in other areas of Michigan as well, though she didn't elaborate on this in her letter. "While problems with performance and design with the M-100s have been documented, this is the first time I have ever questioned the integrity of these machines," Johnson wrote in her letter.
According to news stories, a race in the August Republican primary in one Michigan township did have a discrepancy in tallies that were counted by hand and by ES&S optical-scan machines. The clerks race in Plymouth Township was recounted after the losing candidate requested it. The initial machine count had showed Joe Bridgman defeating Mary Ann Prchlik by 1,920 to 1,770. But the hand count narrowed the margin to 1,885 to 1,727. Officials attributed the discrepancy to "smears and marks" on the ballots, which skewed the results when they were run through the machines.

Four employees hired by a temporary staffing agency to encourage absentee voting for Sen. John McCain in Wisconsin say they were instructed to tell people they were Republican volunteers.
The employees told The Associated Press in interviews on Monday they were hired by Allstaff Labor Group to go door-to-door in the Milwaukee suburbs locating McCain supporters and distributing absentee ballot request forms.
Allstaff recruited the workers under a contract with a consulting firm hired by the Republican Party of Wisconsin to run its absentee ballot program.
The workers claim they were told to say they were GOP volunteers even though they were getting paid $10 an hour for the work. They were required to sign agreements stating they would not speak publicly about their work with anyone including reporters, but they decided to speak out because they were angry they had not been paid for their final few days.
"I told the Republican Party and Allstaff, I wanted to know why we were lying to these residents," said Loyalty Dixon, 26, a Milwaukee resident who worked about two weeks in Waukesha. "I said, isn't that fraudulent? They didn't give me a good explanation. They said, you guys know you're getting paid. Don't worry about it."
She recalled getting praised by Waukesha residents at gas stations and at a McDonald's for being a McCain supporter. Some residents at their doors even asked whether they were getting paid, she said.
"We had to lie to these people and say we were volunteers," she said.

Medical Records? Sure
The Caucus
Just last week, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska declined to release any health records or be interviewed about her medical history, little of which is known to the public.
Ms. Palin, however, appears to have changed her mind, telling Brian Williams of NBC News in an interview on Wednesday, “The medical records — so be it.”
So Mrs Palin, where are they? Or were you lying on camera?October 22, 2008, 8:23 pm
