The brief video emphasizes what the right-wing continues to ignore: it takes a strong and centered couple (and family) to bring about real change, and set an example for all Americans in the toughest of times. Barack and Michelle have been superb role models as they've weathered personal attacks, racism, disinformation and slander, while fighting for real change.

The part of the interview which shows Rahm Emanual's tracking abilities and technology is at around 11 minutes into the video clip above:
60 Minutes aired tonight what feels like the kajillionth interview/profile of White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Boy does he look tired. Interestingly, the excerpt released yesterday in which Emanuel referred to the “fringe” element of the GOP did not make the final cut, so perhaps there is more to come online the sometime in the next few days. The interview contained the usual tropes: Emanuel’s aggressive style, his penchant for profanity (he never swears in the Oval Office), and the toll his job is taking on his family life (his kids get up at 5:15am so they can go swimming with him), his competitive relationship with his brothers Ari and Zeke.
Perhaps the most interesting thing to come from the interview — other than that Rahm has some sort of GPS device in his office to literally track all the movements of the First and Second families — especially in light of today’s epic vote on health care reform, is that Rahm thinks that Washington is working just fine. For real.
The process doesn’t trump the product…Washington can deal with these issues, if you didn’t think it could you wouldn’t get out of bed at five in the morning to go attack the day. I fundamentally believe America is set up to deal with this….Sometimes you will have differences and that’s not a negative.
Interesting, is so far as I never pegged Rahm as the glass half full type. But also reassuring, I guess, in so far as he doesn’t appear to be buying the hype. Also, in case there was any doubt (and lately there’s been plenty), Rahm’s “druthers are whatever the President wants.” Video of the exchange below. The part about Washington working fine starts at the 2:35 mark. The part of the interview which shows Rahm Emanual's tracking abilities and... more

Poor Bill Yosses. He's the White House pastry chef. He makes desserts for a living.
He works for Barack and Michelle Obama. They talk about healthy eating. All the time.
Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?
Not at all.
Yosses' creations -- especially his pies -- have won over even the Obamas.
The president calls him "The Crustmaster."
Story continues below
The first lady points to pie-on-demand as one of the big plusses of life at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
"I'm the dark side," Yosses joked in an AP interview. "They love our pies."
In truth, Yosses says, there's no contradiction to being the pastry chef for such an avowedly health-conscious first family.
"They did reassure me that they love dessert," Yosses says of his first days in the Obama White House. "But they don't want it there for themselves or their children every day."
Yosses, 56, doesn't cook just for the Obamas. His team whips up treats for dozens, hundreds and thousands of guests attending a never-ending stream of parties, receptions and other special events at the White House.
On a recent visit to the pastry kitchen, Yosses offered a rare insider's view of the operation.

"Barack and Michelle Obama and their daughters spent the evening of Feb. 6 in the presidential box at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., applauding the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Evidently, it was the first family’s idea of a fun Friday night out.
But in a capital where every presidential inflection and turn of phrase is parsed for glimmers of meaning, that front-and-center display of enthusiasm for one of the “high” or “classic” arts boomed like a 21-gun salute. It fed increasing hopes among arts advocates that the Obamas would generate a greater buzz for the arts simply by smiling in theater seats or strolling through museum galleries.
If outings to arts venues become a habit with the first family, “it would be a huge boon to the arts community in Washington and for the United States and the world,” says David Andrew Snider, president of the League of Washington Theatres. “There’s a widespread feeling that he ‘gets it.’ He gets the importance of the arts.”
“They could indeed lead by example,” agrees Mariana Nork, senior vice president of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, across the street from the White House. “We’re going to have new trends set.”""Barack and Michelle Obama and their daughters spent the evening of Feb. 6 in the... more

First Family Hotel Stay
As everyone knows, President-elect Obama and his family are moving from Chicago this weekend to Washington, and will be staying at a hotel until the inauguration on January 20th. That would be a total of 16 nights before they spend their first night in the White House.
According to the news reports, this is the hotel they will be calling home for those sixteen nights and seventeen days before the inauguration: the very hoity-toity, five-star property, the Hay-Adams Hotel in Washington, DC. Check 'em out here: Washington DC - Hay-Adams Hotel. Perhaps the Holiday Inn was booked up already.
Being in the tour business, I was curious just what these rooms go for, and just what we will be spending to put up the new first family (and their entire entourage) for these two and a half weeks. The property is sold out for the time that the Obamas will be there - all 145 rooms and 20 suites - so I went to the following month and got the off-season (lowest) rate for the top-of-the-line suite, where no doubt the Obamas will be staying. The one-bedroom luxury suite with a view of Lafayette Park goes for $3,200.00 per night!! Yes, you read that right - three thousand two hundred dollars. And unless the kids will be sleeping in their bed for sixteen nights, you've gotta add the cost of a second room for the girls, too. Hypothetically, let's put them up in the cheapest two-bed room, which goes for $395.00 per night! So now we're up to $3,595.00 per night x 16 nights, which is $57,520 for sixteen nights, plus room tax (14.5% at this property) for another $8,340.00. That's a total of $65,860.00 just for the rooms.
But wait - there's more! They're probably gonna want to eat while they're there. Click on the "Dining" link on the hotel's web site. This is fun. The Lafayette is their breakfast-lunch-dinner dining room. Room service and private dining would be more, so this is a conservative estimate of their meals for two and a half weeks. Check out the menus. A bowl of corn flakes with a sliced banana for the girls is $9.50. Say you want just a little continental breakfast (juice, rolls, coffee)? That'll run you $18.00. An omelet? Just $16.00, plus an additional $5.50 for a side of bacon or potatoes. Now let's go to the lunch menu. Say you want just a burger and fries? That'll run you $27.00, plus your beverage. And dinner? OMG! Let's start with a bowl of soup du jour for $9.00, and then enjoy a little Sauteed Dover Sole for another $45.00! And for those couple of Sundays that they'll be spending there, how 'bout a little Sunday brunch for $65.00 per person. And remember to add tax and tip to these meals for not only the first family, but their entire entourage. For sixteen nights and seventeen days.
Makes my hair hurt to even think about what this is costing the American taxpayer, often the unemployed American taxpayer, who may be enjoying their peanut butter and jelly lunches and meatloaf dinners in their homes that are possibly "justthisclose" to foreclosure. But in American politics, nothing is too good for our first family, I suppose, regardless of where the rest of the country is, financially.
God bless America.Anybody know if this is accurate??? Pretty outrageous, if so .... Could just about... more
