Allegations that a 62-year-old Iraqi grandmother was tortured and executed by British soldiers after her family home was raided three years ago are being investigated by the Royal Military Police.
The Army's involvement in the death and abuse of Sabiha Khudur Talib is one of the most serious charges to be made against Britain during its six-year occupation of southern Iraq.
UK government ministers are to be given previously unseen police reports from a Basra crime unit which conclude that Mrs Talib's body was dumped on a roadside in a British body bag in November 2006. There was a bullet hole in her abdomen and her face had injuries consistent with torture, police reported.Allegations that a 62-year-old Iraqi grandmother was tortured and executed by British... more

A new Taliban commander leading deadly attacks against UK troops in southern Afghanistan was freed 15 months ago by a US military tribunal after he persuaded them he wanted to live a peaceful life with his family.
Abdullah Ghulam Rasoul has reportedly brought a new sophistication to the road side bombs that are killing a growing number of UK troops. In 2008 three quarters of troops killed in the county were killed by explosions, not gunfire. A much larger percentage than those killed by similar devices in 2007.
Rasoul known as prisoner number 008, is not the first Guantánamo prisoner to resurface in a militant group, hampering Barack Obama's efforts to shut down the detention facility in Cuba

"The maximum compensation for armed forces personnel injured in service has been doubled by defence ministers from £285,000 to £570,000.
The increase is retrospective, which means around £10m will be paid out to 2,700 troops who have been awarded lump-sum payments.
For the most seriously injured this is in addition to a lifetime tax-free index-linked monthly payment."
"A 19-year-old seriously injured soldier could receive more than £1m over the course of his life under the new system."
It doesn't change the horror of war. But the troops do deserve respect and compensation for whatever duty they perform in the name of the UK. Grats government."The maximum compensation for armed forces personnel injured in service has been... more
