This week the battle for the album chart topper was won by the album Bother by Boyzone. It sounds like a few music followers expected the new Gorillaz album Plastic Beach to top the charts but found that Boyzone fans are standing with the band during a difficult time,
"Gorillaz had been on course to top the charts with Plastic Beach but Boyzone ended up selling more copies of their record, their first album since band member Stephen Gately passed away in October."
Digital Spy posts the chart line up, go on the site for album reviews:
1. (-) Boyzone: 'Brother'
2. (-) Gorillaz: 'Plastic Beach'
3. (3) Alicia Keys: 'The Element Of Freedom'
4. (-) Amy MacDonald: 'A Curious Thing'
5. (2) Lady GaGa: 'The Fame Monster'This week the battle for the album chart topper was won by the album Bother by... more

The Press Complaints Commission has rejected a complaint made by Stephen Gately's partner about an opinion piece in the Daily Mail by journalist Jan Moir that described the events leading up to the singer's death as “sleazy” and “less than respectable”. Whatever the cause of death is, it is not, by any yardstick, a natural one,” she wrote.
The PCC received more than 25,000 complaints, a record number, after a number of Facebook and Twitter campaigns. Gately's civil partner, Andrew Cowles, said he was disgusted by the article and claimed the Daily Mail had broken the PCC's code of conduct on three grounds, arguing that it was inaccurate, intruded into private grief and contained homophobic remarks.
The code says that the press must avoid making pejorative references to a person's sexual orientation, but the commission, which has Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre as chairman of the Editors' Code of Practice Committee., said that Moir did not use any abusive or discriminatory language.
Two weeks ago Alan Rusbridger, the Guardian editor, said the credibility of the PCC was "clinging by its fingertips", and that recent investigations had been "embarrassing".

When the BNP's Nick Griffin is momentarily on the good guys' side by slating something you've done, you know it's time to apologise.
The Daily Mail's Jan Moir, who caused massive outrage last week when she said Stephen Gately's death wasn't natural in a loathsome article for the paper, has expressed regret and publicly said sorry to Stephen Gately's friends and family for the timing of the column.
To Moir's horror, it was "widely condemned as 'homophobic' and 'hateful'". 25,000 other people were horrified too, by the original piece and felt it necessary to complain to the press watchdog.
Realising you can't really say 25,000 individuals all managed to get the wrong end of the stick and still sound sane, Moir resorts to the Some Of My Best Friends Are Gay argument.
"Many have interpreted my words as a 'bigoted rant' and suggested that my motive was to insinuate that Stephen died 'because he was gay'. Anyone who knows me will vouch that I have never held such poisonous views."
It doesn't look like a lot of people are ready to forgive just yet though. 'Jan Moir' is trending on Twitter, with many describing her apology as insincere and one user going so far as to say he "does't think she will be winning the Fag-Hag of the year award."When the BNP's Nick Griffin is momentarily on the good guys' side by slating... more

In a fairly low key article posted on their site this morning (here: http://bit.ly/3ROUlf), the Daily Mail said the following about the number of complaints made to the PCC about their writer Jan Moir's subjective piece that said Stephen Gately's death was apparently not "natural".
"The Press Complaints Commission has received more than 1,000 complaints and one complaint has been made to the Metropolitan Police."
In fact, over 21, 000 people have complained - more complaints in a single weekend than the PCC has had in the past five years.
Frustratingly for those offended by Moir's piece, the PCC is waiting on a complaint from Gately's family but said it would "consider" the 21,000 complaints.
The Dailymail.co.uk saw traffic jump by 21% as a result of all the fuss.
For more info on the article and the huge internet backlash that followed, have a read of this current.com piece: http://current.com/1fi3i4cIn a fairly low key article posted on their site this morning (here:... more

Of course not but that's not stopped Daily Mail journalist Jan Moir writing an opinion piece that appears to imply the fact the Boyzone singer was gay may have had something to do with his death. Authorities have said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Gately's demise but that doesn't prevent Moir speculating about why he and his partner invited another man back to their apartment, whether drugs were involved and whether the singer's death "strikes another blow to the happy-ever-after myth of civil partnerships."
Twitter's not happy. Jan Moir, #janmoir and Daily Mail are all trending on the site, with people tweeting links to the article, links to the press complaints commission and their views of Moir.
Even Derren Brown is getting stuck in by retweeting Charlie Brooker's retweet (still with me?) of a user's scathing put-down: "Jan Moir manages to walk the difficult tightrope between being a bitch and a c**t."

Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has been found dead at the age of 33, it was reported today.
Gately was believed to have been holidaying in Majorca when he died yesterday, according to a newspaper.
Boyzone manager Louis Walsh told the News of the World: "We're all absolutely devastated. I'm in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don't know much about what's happened yet.
"I only heard after The X Factor and we will rally around each other this week. He was a great man."
All four remaining members of Boyzone - Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham - will be flying to Palma, Majorca tomorrow.
Boyzone star Shane Lynch told the News of the World: "Me and the boys are flying out in the morning. We just need to get over to where he's passed and work out what we need to do."
Ronan Keating, who is in Chicago, has been left devastated by the death of his close friend. A pal revealed to the newspaper: "Ronan is completely distraught. No-one saw this coming.
"He loved Stephen like a brother, they were so close, it's absolutely floored him.
"It's a massive shock to everyone and no one can take it in yet.
"He was a man in the prime of his life, and this is a huge tragedy."
Gay singer Gately's coming out ten years ago caused a sensation in the pop music world. He leaves a husband Andrew Cowles, who he married in a civil union in March, 2006.
Gately also became a star of theatre, TV and radio, appearing in the West End as Joseph in and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and in the ITV show Dancing on Ice.
Boyzone had 17 top five singles and four number one albums before splitting in 2000. They made a comeback tour in 2007.
A spokesman for Boyzone confirmed the death but details are yet to emerge.Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has been found dead at the age of 33, it was reported... more

Boyzone have become the first boyband to feature a gay couple in their video.
Singer Stephen Gately teams up with a male actor for the touchy feely scenes in their latest single Better.
The other Boyzone members are paired with girls but Stephen, who came out in 1999 and is in a civil partnership, wanted things to be different.
He told Newsbeat: "For me, it's just me being me and I don't think there should be a real big issue about the whole thing anyway."
Stephen Gately added: "I just think it's just a beautiful video and I think it works superbly for the song.
"I'm hoping this video will have a good, positive, all-round reaction."
Boyzone announced they were reforming for a UK tour last November and are playing more dates around Europe next May and June.
The group released Back Again... No Matter What - The Greatest Hits last month with their first new single in nine years, Love You Anyway, making it to number five in the chart.
Group decision
Boyzone originally planned to have their own partners in the video for Better but none of them would appear in it.
They then talked about getting celebrities involved but finally decided to employ actors.
Stephen Gately says the decision to include a gay couple in the black and white video was one made jointly by the whole band.
He said: "I came out in 1999 and it was a big issue at the time and I don't think I could have done this video without having a guy in the video.
"I think it's important for me to be true to myself.
"The lads were saying, 'You've got to do this'. They were pushing saying, 'This would be fantastic'. It's the first of its kind. That's why I went for it."
Better isn't the first music video to feature a homosexual couple.
1990's Being Boring by the Pet Shop Boys featured two men kissing at a house party.
Boyzone were put together in 1993 by X Factor judge Louis Walsh.
The band released four albums between then and 1999 before splitting up a year later.Boyzone have become the first boyband to feature a gay couple in their video.... more
