More than 200 years before cameras were invented, 16th century master painter Cravaggio apparently used light, shadow and illuminaton techniques that "are the basis of photography," according to an art historian. Apparently art historians have known for a long time that he used illumination techniques to project subjects on to canvas using a mirror and lens, but Roberta Lapucci believes that he also used some light-sensitive substances like powder made from crushed fireflies to "fix" images on his paper.
