Update:
Sunday's studio estimates are in and Avatar got a huge Saturday bump and made 14 million on that day. Here are the updated estimates
1. Avatar 30m 594m
2. Edge of Darkness 17.1m 17.1m
3. When in Rome 12m 12m
4. The Tooth Fairy 10m 26.1m
5. The Book of Eli 8.7m 74.3m
6. Legion 6.8m 28.6m
7. The Lovely Bones 4.7m 38m
8. Sherlock Holmes 4.5m 197.5m
9. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel 4m 209m
10. Its Complicated 3.7m 104m
Friday’s box office estimates are in and James Cameron’s Avatar has won the weekend crown for the 7th weekend in a row. The blockbuster made 7.5 million dollars on Friday and is headed for a weekend finish of about 23 million dollars and will put its domestic total at 587 million dollars. This puts the film in position to cross Titanic (600.7 million total) next weekend to become the highest grossing domestic film of all time. The film is already the number one worldwide film of all time.
Mel Gibson’s return to the big screen, Edge of Darkness, made 5.7 million dollars on Friday. The Martin Campbell directed film should finish the weekend with about 16.7 million dollars. This is a bit of a disappointment considering the film was released on the same weekend as last year’s surprise hit Taken. These films are both revenge thriller but due to its R-rating and mixed reviews, Darkness wasn’t able to replicate Taken’s opening.
Touchstone’s romantic comedy, When in Rome, staring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel made 4.4 million dollars on Friday and should end the weekend with about 13.2 million dollars. Not a bad opening for the film considering the poor reviews and lack of many theaters. Although the state of current romantic comedies hasn’t helped the films bring in much money. Look at this year’s other rom-com Leap Year.
The Book of Eli made 2.3 million dollars on Friday and should translate to about 7 million dollars for the weekend and should put its total at about 72 million dollars. Dwayne Johnson’s family comedy, Tooth Fairy, also made 2.2 million on Friday and despite finishing fifth on Friday, it will probably finish in fourth for the weekend over Eli due to its family friendliness.

In need to avenge the violent murder of a brother, sister, lover, wife, best friend or significant other? Then Mel Gibson is your man, for vengeance is his middle name. He’s been in the revenge business since 1979 when he exploded on the big screen as Mad Max (although he’s been quite good at some other non-revenge driven roles). For he, in the words of Ezekiel 25:17, as quoted by Samuel Jackson in “Pulp Fiction,” will always “strike down upon those with great vengeance and with furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.” And, boy, when it comes to smiting enemies with righteous anger, Mel does it in a no-nonsense, almighty kinda way.

~y2010m1d31-Avatar-edges-Darkness--conquers-Rome-to-remain-number-one-at-box-office-for-a-7th-weekend
Sectors of the media may now be downplaying the remarkable performance of 'Avatar' at the box office over the issue of how its record-setting numbers add up. But, one thing is for certain. With seven weekends and counting, no other film since 1982 has had as long a run at number one. Meanwhile, Mel Gibson's controversial return to the screen and Kristen Bell's first leading film role did little to counter the power of the Na'avi.~y2010m1d31-Avatar-edges-Darkness--conquers-Rome-to-remain-number-one-at-box-office-for... more

The story: Detective Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) investigates the death of his beloved daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) after she gets violently killed – a gun shot that he thought was meant for him. Turns out he gets a lot more than he bargained for: government conspiracy, unethical business practices, shady guys with greasy hair and suits, radical activist groups, and dairy products laced with radiation. Think of it as Taken meets Ransom with a nuclear twist.
It was a TV show?! Yes. It was a mini-series from the ‘80s starring Bob Peck – the dude who played the dinosaur game warden in Jurassic Park.
What worked? Gibson hasn’t lost his touch when it comes to selling a character who is angry and persistent. In the limited screen time he shares with his on-screen daughter, he is a softy. Emma means the world to him and it comes across well – for the most part. Still, he is like Jason Bourne but with a paternal agenda. And kudos on the Boston accent.
What didn’t work? Somewhere in his journey of vengeance, I lost interest. There were too many elements involving conspiracy, family secrets, mysterious deaths, nuclear weaponry, blah, blah, blah. I was expecting something dumbed down for someone like me who just wanted to see Mel Gibson get crazy and kick some ass a la Lethal Weapon.
