The Woolworths brand is to be re-launched as an online retailer after being bought by Daily Telegraph owners, Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay.
The much-loved High Street chain went into administration in November and its more than 800 stores closed a month ago after struggling with debts of £385m.
It is thought only a fraction of the former total of almost 30,000 staff will get their jobs back.
Woolworths' children's clothing label Ladybird is also to be re-born online.

The announcement comes just three days after the final 200 Woolworths stores closed their doors for the last time.
"We are confident we can help to support the local community in these towns who have lost a major High Street retailer in Woolworths," said Iceland.

Trading in five of Woolworths 19 stores in Northern Ireland comes to an end later.
More than 200 branches of the company in the UK will close with the loss of thousands of jobs.
The five Northern Ireland branches are at Ballymena, Armagh, Enniskillen, Lurgan and Newry.
Unless there is a last-minute rescue effort, the remaining 600 stores will close on 5 January and 27,000 staff will lose their jobs.
The chain called in administrators last month amid mounting debts of £385m.
Pat Kelly, a former manager of the Armagh branch, said the Northern Ireland outlets formed one of the company's top regions.
"Everybody is very, very upset about the whole situation," he said.
"The stores in Northern Ireland were always the top stores in performance, both in sales and profit, in the company."
I loved going to Woolworths when I was a kid. Are there any left in the states? Does anyone know? Just curious.

"Some 28,000 Woolworths staff are set to join the growing ranks of Britain's unemployed after being told yesterday that all stores are to close by early January.
Talks with potential buyers of the stricken chain continue, but administrators Deloitte told the group's remaining 28,275 employees yesterday to prepare themselves for the worst.
Workers had learned the news in an email from head office yesterday morning. The first 200 of the group's 807 stores will close on 27 December, followed by subsequent waves on 30 December and 2 January. The final stores will open their doors to the public for the last time on 5 January, ending nearly a century's trading at the high-street institution.
"Some people have worked at Woolworths for 10, 20 years and it really means something to them," said one head office worker, who said colleagues had cried when the decision was announced. "Woolworths has been around for 99 years so it is almost a heritage brand."
Last-minute bids for the chain were said to be in the offing from groups in the UK and overseas, but hopes of a deal being struck look forlorn."
Should more have been done to help this company? Should the government have stepped in as they have with the banks? What will 28,000 people becoming unemployed do to the already fragile economy?"Some 28,000 Woolworths staff are set to join the growing ranks of Britain's... more

Some people will be able to have more bargains than ever this Xmas as Woolworths closes its 815 shops today. A buyer was never found for the 100 year old famous chain store and over 30,000 staff will be losing their jobs. A business expert has echoed what many people felt about Woolworths in that it failed to move with the times.
"It just never kept pace with the change in the High Street, it's core DVD and CD business has been taken away by the online trade."
"It's been very, very difficult - it just hasn't been as fleet footed as many of its rivals."
Looks lik Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco, the Co-op and discount chain Poundland are still interested in picking up some of its prime sites.

The high-street retailer of Woolworths is on the edge of collapse, with the jobs of its staff under threat.
More than 30,000 retail jobs were at risk last night as Woolworths fought to avoid collapse and the fashion discount chain MK One crashed into administration for the second time in a year.
Woolworths' future was hanging in the balance after its bankers objected to a management rescue plan to sell the loss-making 800-store chain to Hilco, which specialises in restructuring distressed companies.
The 99-year old retailer, which is a mainstay of town and city centres across the country, is now in last-ditch talks with its lenders in an attempt to avoid bankruptcy. But a source close to the negotiations said the talks had reached "an impasse" and "are not looking good".
