You needn't tune in early to the Oscar show this coming March 7; there'll be no suspense for the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards. Christoph Waltz is a lock for his role as the sneaky German officer in Inglourious Basterds, and Mo'Nique a sure thing as the mom from hell in Precious. But you might want to watch later on, to see if two Hollywood icons, George Clooney and Meryl Streep, are upstaged in the Best Actor and Actress categories by two lesser-known Brits, Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan. And wouldn't it be a blast if The Hurt Locker, the indie Iraq war drama that not many people saw, were to take Best Picture over the mainstream front-swimmer Up in the Air?

You know what studio heads wanted for Christmas? They wanted people to go to the movies. They must have been good little boys and girls, because -- overall -- there were no lumps of coal in their stockings. Films that are perfect at every single level, from the storytelling to the dialogue, from the acting to the editing, are extremely rare. “Up in the Air” is one such film. It’s at once contemporary and eternal, a portrait of these desperate, unfortunate times we are living in. A human film, a touching film, a film that in a weird way reaffirms our humanity while at the same time avoiding all of the traditional Hollywood focus group approved tidy resolutions.

As the smoke starts to clear at Toronto, there's one movie that can be seen through the haze.
"Up in the Air," Jason Reitman's tale of a globetrotting corporate hatchet man played by George Clooney, has taken off faster than (insert easy plane pun here), carrying on a tradition in which Toronto establishes an awards-season front-runner.
But that's pretty much all the festival has established: one front-runner. This year's fest, which ends Saturday, has looked a lot different from recent editions. In 2007, for instance, "No Country for Old Men," "Michael Clayton" and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" were just some of the pics to begin their all-category runs.
This year should have seen even more front-runners, what with the Academy opening up the best picture race to 10 nominees. But Toronto didn't begin to answer the question of which films those might be. "The Academy is asking voters to fill out twice as many slots, and when you look at the pictures out there, you have to wonder where those movies are coming from," one consultant said.
The dearth of favorites is happening partly because there are fewer specialty releases this year in general, and partly because some upcoming movies that might have had a chance -- new films from Peter Jackson, Mira Nair, Clint Eastwood and James Cameron, to name a few -- didn't make the trip to Toronto.

"I would rather have a rectal examination on live TV by a fellow with cold hands than have a Facebook page." -- George Clooney during this afternoon's Up In The Air press conference, which I stepped into just long enough to take this video. It began at 1:30 -- it's now 2:55 pm. The press conference attendees also included costars Jason Bateman, Anna Kendrick, Vera Farmiga and director-writer Jason Reitman.

btw this video doesn't show George saying that quote on camera, but at least it gives an idea of what a press conference at the Toronto Film Festival is like."I would rather have a rectal examination on live TV by a fellow with cold hands... more

Click the link at top to watch the trailer for ‘Armored’, (Spoiler Alert – the trailer is the entire film, presented in a linear and condensed format). Then watch the 'Up in the Air' trailer embedded above.
See the difference?
I have a fond memories as a kid attending a 5 hour trailer marathon at the old UC Theatre in Berkeley. Each trailer, almost without exception, tried to do something, something exciting, something novel, something to get you to see the picture: without showing you the whole g*ddam* film.
When did the art form of crafting interesting, intelligent, humorous, sly, novel, witty, unexpected, chilling, thrilling trailers die? When did it become such a lost art that the ‘Up in the Air’ trailer stands out so? Answers in the form of a comment please. What happened – when did folks get so scared – too frightened to be able to anything but the most base, obvious thing?Click the link at top to watch the trailer for ‘Armored’, (Spoiler Alert... more
