Episode 44: Groove in G
It is an honor to share with you a new original Song Around the World titled "Groove in G." We started this track in West Africa with a musical group named Tinariwen. We asked them to play a groove in the key of G, then as we traveled the world we added more musicians to the song. Over the course of our travels the song transformed into a global jam with its roots in the blues.Episode 44: Groove in G

The Inspiration
Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to share it with the world.
The Production
We built a mobile recording studio, equipped with all the same equipment used in the best studios, and traveled to wherever the music took us. As technology changed, our power demands were downsized from golf cart batteries to car batteries, and finally to laptops. Similarly, the quality with which we were able to film and document the project was gradually upgraded from a variety of formats-- each the best we could attain at the time—finally to full HD.
One thing that never changed throughout the process was our commitment to create an environment for the musicians in which they could create freely and that placed no barriers between them and those who would eventually experience their music. By leading with that energy and intent everywhere we traveled, we were freely given access to musicians and locations that are usually inaccessible. In this respect, the inspiration that originally set us on this path became a co-creator of the project along with us!
The Effect
Over the course of this project, we decided it was not enough for our crew just to record and share this music with the world; we wanted to create a way to give back to the musicians and their communities that had shared so much with us. And so in 2007 we created the Playing for Change Foundation, a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation whose mission is to do just that. In early 2008, we established Timeless Media, a for-profit entity that funds and extends the work of Playing for Change. Later that year, Timeless Media entered into a joint venture with the Concord Music Group through the support of label co-owner and entertainment legend Norman Lear and Concord Music Group executive vice president of A&R John Burk. Our goal is to bring PFC’s music, videos and message to the widest possible audience.
Now, musicians from all over the world are brought together to perform benefit concerts that build music and art schools in communities that are in need of inspiration and hope. In addition to benefit concerts, the Playing for Change band also performs shows around the world. When audiences see and hear musicians who have traveled thousands of miles from their homes, united in purpose and chorus on one stage, everyone is touched by music's unifying power.
And now, everyone can participate in this transformative experience by joining the Playing for Change Movement. People are hosting screenings, musicians are holding benefit concerts of every size, fans are spreading the message of Playing for Change through our media, and this is only the beginning. Together, we will connect the world through music!
Amazing Grace: Live in Boston
Grandpa Elliott has been closing our shows each night of our fall 2009 tour with a powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace." His performance is so beautifully soulful that words don't do it justice. Fortunately, we were able to film it at the Orpheum in Boston, and are excited to share it with you here.

Michael Jackson died almost two weeks ago (June 25th) in Los Angeles. Suffering a cardiac arrest at home, the singer was rushed to hospital where after a fight to save his life he was declared dead.
His brother Jemaine revealed the singer's demise to the world in a carefully worded statement, which seems to have unleashed a tidal wave of mourning. Topping charts across the world, at one point Michael Jackson netted nine out of the Top Ten albums on the Billboard charts.
However amidst the confusion surrounding the singer's death a number of claims have been made. In an autopsy last week the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office said there had been no foul play in Jackson’s death.
But toxicology tests have yet to be completed, with the process understood to be lengthy and complex. In a new interview with British tabloid News Of The World the icon's sister Le Toya Jackson reveals that she believes the singer was murdered.
"Michael was murdered,” Le Toya said. “And we don't think just one person was involved. Rather, it was a conspiracy of people. I feel it was all about money.”
Le Toya then followed this by revealing that she has organised an independent autopsy. “I can say newspaper reports that there was methadone in his body are inaccurate. He had many needle marks on his neck and on his arms, and more about those will emerge in the next few weeks."
"But nothing has changed my mind that this was murder and I won't give up until I find out what killed my brother.”
In addition to this, Le Toya Jackson also attacked those behind the singer's proposed residency in the O2 Arena. Michael Jackson initially announced ten dates at the stadium, before the number of concerts crept up to 50.
Shortly before he died Michael Jackson told fans outside a Los Angeles dance studio that it was never his idea to do the shows. Le Toya has echoed her brother's sentiments by claiming he was "pushed" into agreeing with them.
"He didn't want to do 50 shows, he only wanted to do 10. But he was pushed. And Michael being Michael didn't want to let down his fans,” Le Toya said.
"But even his daughter Paris said, 'They worked Daddy too hard.' Somebody that fragile can't keep going on like that."Michael Jackson died almost two weeks ago (June 25th) in Los Angeles. Suffering a... more

Seal - A change is gonna come 2008
Original by Sam Cook
I was born by the river
In a little tent
And just like the river
I've been running ever since.
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh, yes it is
It's been too hard living
But I'm afraid to die
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky.
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will.
Then I go to my brother
And I say: Brother oh help me please, yeh.
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees.
There's been times
that I thought I wouldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Yes it will, oh I know
A change is gonna come, but I know
A change is gonna come
Hey
A change is gonna come, right now, oooooh
A change is gonna come, I say it now
hey-ey-ey-ey-ey, oh no
Oh, believe me
I say a change is gonna comeSeal - A change is gonna come 2008

http://playingforchange.com - Our guide while filming in Durban, South Africa and in the township of Umlazi outside of Durban was Bekhani Mamela. Bekhani turned out to be one of the most pivotal people we collaborated with during our journey. He is the choir director and founder of Sinamuva who is featured in all but one of Playing for Changes songs around the world. His arrangement on these songs brought us to tears. He, along with Sinamuva, is a pure representation of hope for all South Africans persevering darkness with music.http://playingforchange.com - Our guide while filming in Durban, South Africa and in... more

One Love
“Let’s get together and feel alright”. While recording and filming in Dharmsala India, where we planned to add some Tibetan singers to this track we passed by a small record shop on the side of the road. The display featured about 50 Tibetan CD covers and one Bob Marley album in the middle. This song around the world is in dedication to the love inside each of us. We can achieve far more together as a human race than we ever can apart. One Love. One Love

One of the best pieces of sound engineering work ever seen. It is a composite audio/video of song whereby additional tracks were laid in by different singers and musicians from different places around the world. The finished product is tremendous!
The song itself is that classic standard "Stand By Me" originally released in 1955 by The Staple Singers and released again in 1961 by the Drifters. This composite version is a real toe tapper. One of the best pieces of sound engineering work ever seen. It is a composite... more
