“Matatoro” is a gorgeous, delightfully weird animated short film directed by Mauro Carraro, Raphaël Calamote, Jérémy Pasquet, students at France’s Supinfocom. The directors describe their work as a reinvention and reinterpretation of the hermetic world of the bullfighting: the fighter, the bull, and the audience. They continue upon the Supinfocom studio’s theme of experimenting with the normally clean features of 3-D and adopting water-color aesthetics, seen in films like the recent Oscar-nominated “Madagascar.”
“Matatoro” is marvelously strange; it’s surreal, impressionistic, maybe even psychoanalytic. If a prerequisite of great art is in some sense inscrutability, then this animated short is certainly one of the most artistic of recent French student animations.
This piece includes colorful illustrations, as well as the animated short film.

“Junko’s Shamisen” is a super-stylized samurai tale by Canadian filmmaker Sol Friedman. The short film is an exquisite chanbara mini-epic of revenge, suffused with manga and kabuki theater. “Junko’s Shamisen” flawlessly integrates traditional cell animation, 2D “cut out” style set animation, comic book dialogue bubbles and even some stop-motion to round things out. All of this is woven into the live action base of the film, which leaps off the screen with vivid color, depth and texture.
Set in the dark and densely-forested, rural backwoods of feudal-era Japan, “Junko’s Shamisen” is the quiet story of a young peasant girl named Junko living with her blind grandfather, who plays a three-stringed instrument called a shamisena. One day, Junko returns to their simple home to discover that her grandfather has been brutally murdered. Devastated and filled with despair, Junko, accompanied by a mystical fox spirit, abandons her old life and sets off for the village in search of better fortunes. While she goes begging from house to house, young Junko inadvertently encounters the ruthless Samurai Lord Yamamura, who was responsible for killing her grandfather. Emboldened by the influence of the fox spirit, Junko breaks out of her petite and non-threatening shell and avenges her grandfather through an act of gruesome poetic justice.
This piece presents a number of colorful photographs, as well as the exquisitely designed short film.

“The Lost Thing” is a widely acclaimed CG animated short film directed by Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann, which is based on a children’s picture book by Tan. The film won the Australian Film Industry Award, the Best Short Film Award at the Melbourne international Film Festival and the top Short Film Prize at the 2011 Annecy International Animation Festival. “The Lost Thing” won the 2011 Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.
The wonderful short film tells the story of a boy who finds a misshapen creature on a beach and tries to find a home for it, despite being faced with a world where everyone believes there are far more important things to pay attention to. The film provides an engaging, tender meditation about things that don’t quite “fit” in this world.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution colorful illustrations, as well as the wonderful, Academy Award winning animated short film.

But one day that grim promise fails, and unbearable tension builds as the God-fearing townsfolk of Backwater wait for someone to die.

“Hezarfen” is a joyously slapstick three-minute 3D animated short film by Tolga Ari, Romain Blanchet, Chung-Yu Huang and Rémy Hurlin, who are recent graduates of Supinfocom Arles. The film takes place in 1632 in Turkey and presents the trials and tribulations of Hezarfen, a citizen of Istanbul who folklore credits with having attempted to make the first human flight with artificial wings in the history of aviation. Legend claims that Hezarfen actually took off from atop the 183-foot tall Galata Tower near Bosporus and landed successfully at Uskudar, almost 3 miles away from the Galata Tower.
This film focuses primarily on how Hezarfen managed to jump from that lofty, truly sky-high tower. As he prepared to jump and launch into flight, a large crowd of townspeople stopped their work to gaze up at the tower, watching with astonishment at the sight of Hezarfen perched on top with flimsy wings attached. In short order, many of them ended up actually getting drawn into the breath-taking drama, as an unforeseen chain of events rapidly began to unfold. The initially courageous-seeming undertaking soon became a turbulently comical misadventure, a wacky escapade that demonstrates the high price imposed by attempts to execute schemes that are really peculiar and strange. Such offbeat strivings for bizarre pioneering achievement can so quickly degenerate into absurdly sparkling calamity.
This piece includes a number of colorful high-resolution illustrations, a slide show and the wickedly funny animated short film.

“Ah, L’Amour” is a darkly humorous two-minute animated short film by cult animator and Academy Award nominee Don Hertzfeld. The film was produced at the age of 18 during Don’s freshman year at UC/Santa Barbara for a beginning film production class, and it was never intended to be screened publicly.
The movie initially saw limited action at film festivals, because Don was embarrassed by it. He was also afraid of being pelted with rocks by angry women, until screenings revealed that women in the audience usually cheered very loudly for the cartoon girls, and always applauded much louder than the men. “Ah, L’Amour” ended up becoming a very popular cult film, and in 1998 it was awarded the HBO Comedy Arts Festival’s Grand Prize Award for “World’s Funniest Cartoon.”
Ah, L’Amour is based on man’s eternal and very difficult search for love, in this case the grueling and determined quest of our very sad hero, “Caffeine.” Hopefully, this is not the reality…Very funny...Enjoy it!!

“Runaway” is an award-winning, cleverly satirical animated short film by the Canadian animator Cordell Barker. Like many acclaimed animators, new work from him is a rare and eagerly awaited occurrence. “Runaway” is just his third short film, after the Oscar-nominated “The Cat Came Back” in 1988 and the Oscar-nominated “Strange Invaders” in 2001.
The story revolves around an undefined moment in the eighteenth century, recreating the journey of a locomotive that collides with an unhurried cow as it crosses the tracks and rapidly begins to hurtle wildly out of control. As the situation becomes more dire a class-conflict breaks out, and while naturally there are victims, in the end everyone turns out to be equal.

“Madagascar: A Journey Diary” is an extraordinary animated short film by the French animator Bastien Dubois. The film is completing quite an impressive festival run, which has included playing at Sundance, winning at Ottawa and winning at Annecy. “Madagascar” has just been short-listed for the 2011 Academy Awards in the Animated Short Film category.
“Madagascar” unfolds in the form of a travel notebook, where the pages turn and drawings come to life for us to discover the extraordinary customs and rituals of the Red Island, in particular the cult of the reversal of the dead. The film is deeply appealing for the same reason travel documentaries succeed, our intrinsic captivation with other places and other people. Along the way, the style of the piece, the jumble of half-finished looking sketches and images across multiple styles, recreates that often overwhelming sense of being fully present and stimulated that one gets when placed in such a rich, yet foreign environment.
This piece includes a number of colorful high-resolution pictures, as well as the award-winning animated short film.

“Wisdom Teeth” is a wickedly funny animated short film by the sick genius Don Hertzfeldt. It has just been named as one of the thirty-three films that have fulfilled the qualifications necessary to be considered in the category of Best Animated Short for 2010 Academy Awards. The film has already made quite a splash at a number of film festivals.
“Wisdom Teeth” was first spotted as a surprise conclusion to the last three “Evening with Don Hertzfeldt” touring programs in Ottawa and Montreal in October 2009. According to Hertzfeldt, in January 2010 the film drunkenly revealed itself at the Sundance Film Festival, punched a woman in the mouth and ran off into the snow without pants. It next showed up at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, where it stumbled into the room cursing God with vodka on its breath. The short allegedly made a lewd gesture before disappearing again in a cloud of biting ants.
“Wisdom Teeth” is about Nigel, who’s just had his wisdom teeth removed. A friend asks to pull out one of his stitches, and Nigel reluctantly gives in to his friend’s seemingly innocent request. From that point on, things go painfully downhill for poor Nigel, and his agonizing ordeal ends up becoming very surreal.
This piece includes pictures, as well as the painfully funny animated short film.

“Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” (1944) is the original classic cartoon version of this endearing Christmas tale, which was created by Max Fleischer two decades before Rudolph came to the small screen. Johnny Marks’ infectious song leads into the well-known story of Santa’s winter weather troubles and how the bullied little deer saved the night. The other reindeer in Christmastown don’t make Rudolph feel very welcome, constantly making fun of his shiny red nose. But when terrible weather threatens to keep Santa Claus from making his annual toy-giving rounds, Rudolph is added to the team precisely for that bright nose, which guides Santa’s sleigh through the skies like a beacon in the night.

“The Night Before Christmas” was originally a 1968 animated television special, with background music provided by the Norman Luboff Choir. It was regularly shown for about 10 years as a holiday special, but it has since disappeared from television. The classic holiday cartoon tells the heartwarming true story of how Clement C. Moore came to write the Christmas poem beloved by generations of children, and includes a joyous retelling of the charming “A Visit from St. Nicholas.”
In the film, Clement Moore goes on a short trip just before Christmas to give a series of lectures at a university, and he promises to get his daughter Charity a storybook about Santa Claus for Christmas while he is away. Charity develops pneumonia while he’s gone, and the doctor says she might not survive. When Clement arrives back home, he’s distraught to see that his beloved daughter is near death. Making things even worse, he hadn’t found any books about Santa Claus when he went shopping, and even through her fever she’s asking for one. Feeling that he has broken his promise, he decides to write a story of his own and read it to her; it is the story which became “A Visit from St. Nicholas.”

“Peace on Earth” is the widely acclaimed classic Christmastime animated short film, which was the masterwork creation of Hugh Harman released during the holiday season of 1939. “Peace on Earth” was nominated for the 1939 Academy Award for Short Subjects (Cartoons) and was reported to have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as well.
The animated short was given its widespread public showings immediately after the outbreak of World War II in Europe, and it was viewed as a serious work that dealt with the idea of what a post-apocalyptic world would be like. In the film, two young squirrels ask their grandfather on Christmas Eve who the “men” are in the lyric “Peace on Earth, good will to men.” The grandfather squirrel then tells them a rotoscoped history of the human race, focusing on the never-ending wars men waged. Ultimately the wars did end, but with the deaths of the last men on Earth, two soldiers shooting each other. Afterward, the surviving animals were inspired to rebuild a society that was dedicated to peace and nonviolence.
