Yusuf Islam, otherwise known as Cat Stevens, accused Coldplay of stealing elements from Stevens' 1973 song "Foreigner Suite" and incorporating it into their song "Viva La Vida."
Islam continues to stand by his accusation but claims he is not angry and is willing to forgive.
Islam states, "They did copy my song but I don't think they did it on purpose. I have even copied myself without even knowing I have done it... I'd love to sit down and have a cup of tea with them and let them know it's okay"
Coldplay may be off the hook for this lawsuit but is still dealing with Joe Satriani- guitarist who has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit for the same song.
Personally, I don't think the cost of the lawsuit is worth suing. Coldplay probably has really good lawyers and it's soooo hard to prove you copied a song. You got to deal with things like malice and actual malice, proving substantial similarity, damages and a whole slew of other hard-to-understand terminology.

Coldplay is one of the best-selling bands in the world, but in spite of its success, the band has a nagging problem: charges that it plagiarized not one, but three other artists to write its recent hit, "Viva La Vida" (video via YouTube).
Clearly someone is stealing from someone.
But why isn't Yusuf Islam calling out Creaky Boards? Why aren't the members of Creaky Boards going after Satriani? Why isn't Satriani going after the whole lot of them?
However this Coldplay kerfuffle plays out, this just might provide the boost that so many laid-off copyright attorneys have been looking for.Coldplay is one of the best-selling bands in the world, but in spite of its success,... more

In the Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off Division, we’ve got an interesting matchup, (10) Elbow vs (15) Joe Satriani. In the last round Elbow’s “Grounds for Divorce” rolled over (7) the Verve, and Joe Satriani upset (2) U2.
Today, Elbow’s back with another song “Leaders of the Free World,” but for Satriani, we pretty much have the one song “If I Could Fly.” So who wins, Elbow, a band with a whole catalogue that influences Coldplay, or Satriani, a guy with one song ripped off more directly? Yesterday we had our first upset. In the Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off Division, number 15 seed Joe Satriani knocked off number 2 seed U2 7-4. I guess lifting one song directly from Satriani was enough to make up for being completely derivative of U2 for years.

In the Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off Division, we’ve got a big game today. It’s (2) U2 vs (15) Joe Satriani. Coldplay tries so hard to sound like U2 that we couldn’t pick just one song, so the clip we’re using is a retrospective of their career. Guitar god Joe Satriani is a force to be reckoned with too. As we all know claims to have written Viva La Vida, to which Coldplay responded, “yeah, get in line.”

Coldplay, no strangers to plagiarism accusations, are now being sued by guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani, as the guitarist is accusing the band of ripping off his 2004 track “If I Could Fly” for their own Grammy-nominated hit “Viva La Vida.” Satriani filed a copyright infringement suit against the band in Los Angeles yesterday, accusing Coldplay of stealing “substantial original portions.” The Satch is seeking a jury trial, damages and “any and all profits attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.” And considering the album and the single were among the biggest sellers this year, not to mention the centerpiece of an Apple iTunes campaign, Satriani stands to make a sizable profit if the jury agrees with him. However, Satriani’s lawyers will have to prove Coldplay somehow heard “If I Could Fly,” which may be a difficult task. That being said, the hook to “Viva” is almost exactly the same as the guitar lick in “If I Could Fly,” as evidenced by the 50-second mark in the video below. Coldplay’s management has not yet commented on the case.Coldplay, no strangers to plagiarism accusations, are now being sued by guitar... more
