The music industry’s most unpredictable award became, well, a little bit more predictable this year as bookies’ favourite PJ Harvey picked up the Mercury Prize.
The 41-year-old star got the judges’ vote for her 2010 album Let England Shake and was delighted that she could be at the ceremony in person to collect the trophy as she was stranded in the US the first time she won.
Speaking about the award she said: "When I last won 10 years ago on September 11, 2001, I was watching the Pentagon burning from my hotel window. So much has happened since then. This album took me a long time to write. It was very important to me. I wanted to make something meaningful, not just for myself but for other people, and hopefully to make something that would last."
Harvey is the first artist to win the Mercury Prize twice in the award’s 19-year history. She was up against Adele, Anna Calvi, Elbow, Everything Everything, Katy B, James Blake, King Creosote and Jon Hopkins, Ghostpoet, Gwilym Simcock and Tinie Tempah.

No other music award causes quite as much debate as the Mercury Prize so expect plenty of discussion around who should walk away with the trophy and the £20,000 windfall at tonight’s ceremony.
This year’s nominees include Anna Calvi, Adele, Katy B, PJ Harvey and Elbow. Though previous winner Antony Hegarty once stated that the Mercury Prize is like a contest between ‘an orange, a spaceship, a potted plant and a spoon,’ there’s still a lot to gain for the winner in terms of profile and sales.
Here are some of the highlights from this year's shortlist:
Anna Calvi
Elbow
Katy B
Metronomy
PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey has long been considered one of England’s most innovative and iconoclastic female artists and with her 8th studio album ‘Let England Shake’ she embarks on a historical musical voyage as she seeks to define her relationship with the land of her birth. This is a musical excavation of England’s very soil, of its history and the violent and bloody cycles of conflict that have shaped the nations geography and psyche. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/album-rewievs/39118-pj-harvey-let-england-shake-reviewfree-albumPJ Harvey has long been considered one of England’s most innovative and... more
