Palestinian militants fired on Israeli soldiers from the courtyard of a U.N. school where dozens of people died in fiery explosions.
The IDF issued a statement saying the school grounds were used by terrorists to fire mortar shells at the troops.
Among the dead were members of a Hamas launching cell, including operatives Immad Abu Askar and Hassan Abu Askar.
The infantrymen returned mortar shell fire into the school grounds, the army said. Defense officials told the Associated Press that booby-trapped bombs in the school triggered the secondary explosions which killed scores of Palestinians on the site.
The IDF released a video taken by a UAV in the end of 2007 showing terrorists firing mortar shells from right outside the school.
"Hamas has in the past fired at Israel and at troops from inside schools, making use of civilians, as is proven by UAV footage," the army said
Soldiers returned fire and multiple explosions went off, presumably emanating from munitions stored there.

A Palestinian terrorist rocket struck an empty kindergarten in Ashdod, Israel, on Monday, sending several people into shock and causing heavy damage to buildings in the area. The facility was empty due to a Home Front Command directive to keep schools and kindergartens closed. Local residents had complied with safety instructions, entering bomb shelters and safe rooms after hearing the warning siren.
By Monday evening, the day's total stood at 37 rockets fired at the South. One struck Beersheba, two hit Kiryat Malachi, seven fell in Netivot and seven landed in Ofakim. A rocket also fell east of Ashdod in the Hevel Yavne Regional Council, and another landed in the western Negev, injuring two. Police sappers had recovered the remains of 11 rockets by evening.

Army spokeswoman Maj. Avital Leibovich said that if civilians were killed, then Hamas was to blame because it operates within civilian areas -- "If Hamas chooses to use those civilians as human shields, then Hamas should be accountable," she said. "Civilians will probably continue to get killed, unfortunately, because Hamas put them in the first lines of fire."
Meanwhile, the IDF infiltrated Hamas's television broadcasts and issued a call to Palestinian non-combatants not to serve as human shields to Hamas terrorists, Israel Radio reported.

The Arab world's most prominent comedian and movie star, Egyptian actor Adel Imam, has shocked many of his fans by expressing understanding for Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip.
The veteran 68-year-old movie star blamed Hamas for the violence, pointing out that the Egyptian leadership had warned the Islamist movement against an impending Israeli military operation.
"Hamas ignored our warnings and chose to lead an asymmetrical war," Imam said, echoing earlier statements by Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Israel's goal in it's current Gaza mission is to stop the terrorist rocket attacks on Israeli civilian cities.
Hamas needs to simply:
1) stop firing these rockets at Israel.
2) hand over any remaining rockets to show they won't fire more.
Israel will IMMEDIATELY leave Gaza as a result, and the Palestinians can go back to their own business.Israel's goal in it's current Gaza mission is to stop the terrorist rocket... more

Most wars have between 30-60% civilians Deaths. In Gaza offensive by Israel, only 13% are civilians. That is an amazingly low numbers and speaks volumes about the morality and character of the Israeli army. Bravo Israel! Amazing, truely amazingly good.
"Since the ground assault began, 64 Palestinian civilians have been killed, said Dr. Moaiya Hassanain, a Health Ministry official. The new deaths brought the death toll in the Gaza Strip to more than 512 since Dec. 27. The tally is based on figures from the U.N. and Palestinian health officials as well as a count by The Associated Press."
That's 13% civilians deaths and 87% hamas terrorists. Those are AMAZINGLY low numbers of civilian casualties, and the actual number is actually lower because, as the Time of London reported, Hamas has told it's terrorists to take off their uniforms to avoid being targeting.

On Tuesday, Hamas legislators marked the Christmas season by passing a Shari'a criminal code for the Palestinian Authority. Among other things, it legalizes crucifixion.
Hamas's endorsement of nailing enemies of Islam to crosses came at the same time it renewed its jihad. Here, too, Hamas wanted to make sure that Christians didn't feel neglected as its fighters launched missiles at Jewish day care centers and schools. So on Wednesday, Hamas lobbed a mortar shell at the Erez crossing point into Israel just as a group of Gazan Christians were standing on line waiting to travel to Bethlehem for Christmas. On Tuesday, Hamas legislators marked the Christmas season by passing a Shari'a... more

Dr. Akram Habeeb writing from the occupied Gaza Strip, Live from Palestine, 29 December 2008
As a Fulbright scholar and professor of American literature at the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG), I have always preferred to keep silent about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I always felt that it was my mission to preach love and peaceful coexistence. However, Israel's massive offensive against the Gaza Strip has spurred me to speak out.
Last night, during the second night of Israel's unprecedented attack on Gaza, I was awakened by the deafening sound of intensive bombardment. When I learned that Israel had bombed my university with American-made F-16s, I realized that its "target bank" had gone bankrupt. Of course Israeli politicians and generals would claim that IUG is a Hamas stronghold and that it preaches terrorism.
As an independent professor, not affiliated with any political party, I can say that IUG is an academic institution which embraces a wide spectrum of political affinities. I see it as prestigious university which encourages liberalism and free thought. This personal point view might seem to be biased; therefore, I would invite anyone who would doubt about my assertions to browse IUG's website and research its history. They would learn about its membership in various international academic institutions, the active role its professors play in scholarly research as well as prizes and research grants they have received.
Why would Israel bomb a university? Israel did not only target my university last night. It also bombed mosques, pharmacies and homes. In Jabaliya refugee camp Israeli bombs killed four little girls, sisters from the Balousha family. In Rafah they killed three brothers, aged 6, 12 and 14. They also killed a mother, along with her one-year-old child from the Kishko family in Gaza City.
These acts made me reflect on some of the commandments given by God to the "Chosen People:" Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house. No one could be chosen by God to annex the land of other people and kill them. Israel made these ethical choices by itself. Israel itself chose to wage its wars to eliminate the indigenous people of Palestine.

PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY BLAMES HAMAS FOR MILITARY CONFLICT
Hamas could have prevented Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Sunday in Cairo. PA President Abbas said Hamas could've prevented current escalation in violence if it did not end truce. Abbas called on Hamas to renew the cease-fire with Israel to avoid further bloodshed in Gaza.
"We spoke to them and told them 'Please, we ask you not to end the cease-fire. Let it continue,'" Abbas said during a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit. "Israel's air force fired about 30 missiles at targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, destroying several Hamas police compounds and killing at least 40 people, a Hamas police spokesman and witnesses said.
Television footage showed dead bodies scattered on a road and wounded and dead being carried away by distraught rescuers. There was widespread damage to buildings.
"I'm afraid we have at least 40 dead," Hamas police spokesman Islam Shahwan told Hamas radio.
He said a police compound in Gaza City had been hosting a graduation ceremony for new personnel when it was attacked.
At least two people were killed and 30 wounded from an attack in Khan Younis, a refugee camp in the south of Gaza.
A Reuters correspondent said Gaza City port and security installations of the Islamist Hamas group were badly damaged. Thick black smoke billowed over the city.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the attack, which followed a decision by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's security cabinet to widen reprisals for cross-border Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel.
A six-month truce expired last week in Gaza.
About a dozen rockets and mortar bombs were fired from Gaza on Friday. One accidentally struck a northern Gaza house killing two Palestinian sisters, aged five and 13, and wounding a third, Palestinian medics said."
For a few rockets that have not injured or killed anyone being fired into Israel in response to Israel's blockade of life sustaining goods, and other humanitarian violations as described by many government officials and humanitarian organizations, firing a barrage of missiles into civilian populations is a little overkill in my opinion. Yes, Israel has a right to defend herself, and so do the Palestinians against a bully that never took the cease fire serious. This is like torching a neighbor's house because the neighbor's kids threw rocks that didn't hurt anyone except the pride of the other neighbor.
Israel is a bully, and more. Not only is this the Sabbath, but it is a holy season. But I guess Israel is above ALL laws."Israel's air force fired about 30 missiles at targets in the Gaza Strip on... more
