For the first time ever, we polled the entire SOS staff on their favorite TV of the last 12 months. We knew that, given the fact that our contributors are (principally) spread out across Canada, the US, and Britain, that the results might well be a mixed bag. What we didn’t necessarily expect was the level of consensus surrounding the upper quartile of the list. There was a clear groundswell of support for our collective #1, but competition was fierce for the spots just behind it. HBO’s Boardwalk Empire looks like a certified hit after 7 million viewers tuned in to last weekend’s premiere. The numbers were so good that HBO, in search of it’s next Sopranos-sized hit, has already ordered a second season despite having only airing the first episode.
A sprawling exterior set of the Atlantic City boardwalk was constructed expressly for Empire. The surprise is that the set was in Brooklyn, an extension of the renowned Coney Island boardwalk. My man Gox managed to sweet-talk his way past security and snap these behind-the-scenes shot of the production in action. Enjoy …
