The Year of Yin Earth Ox 己丑 begins January 26th. The first day of the Chinese New Year falls on the second New Moon after the winter solstice. The forthcoming year is formally called Ji Chou.
In the 'Stem-Branch' system, the years are counted in 60-year character cycles. The 12 Earthly Branches associate an animal (Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog, Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Sheep, Rooster, Pig) with each year, while the Ten Heavenly Stems combine the 5 elements (Metal, Wood, Earth, Fire, Water) with either yin or yang. The yin and yang strands of the five elements represent respectively the two complementary passive and active sides of our nature.
The Year of the Yin Earth Ox (Year 4707 in the Chinese calendar and roughly 2009 in the Gregorian calendar) should be much better than 2008 according to Feng Shui experts. The Year of the Earth Rat (2008), was marked by the instability of soil over water. The Year of the Earth Ox combines like elements which portend peace, harmony and recovery.
