“The Karate Kid,” based as it is on such a stock tale of transformation and growth, seems likely to offer ample room for reconsideration. However, nothing so impressive happens in this case.
What one does get is a lengthy introduction to Hollywood’s newest Golden Child, Will and Jada Pinkett’s son Jaden Smith, who is likely to be holding the keys to a studio backlot by the time he sprouts whiskers. With the formidable support of a subdued Jackie Chan, the film has a potent one-two punch, but the flab of the script and direction prove too overwhelming an opponent for this duo to overcome.“The Karate Kid,” based as it is on such a stock tale of transformation... more

Normally, I'm the first person to stand on my tiny hind legs and cackle like a hynea about how idiotic something looks. Yet when it comes to The Karate Kid remake, these trailers joyfully keep my nostalgia goggles firmly in place, if not even tighter. What's that mean? Check the second trailer.
Of course, "take off your jacket it. Put it back on" will be the new take on "wax on, wax off." There's something about late-period Jackie Chan being allowed to act as a grizzled mentor that's appealing, even in the wake of trite "fish out of water moments" like Jaden Smith speaking Chinese, only to have the guy next to him utter, "Dude. I'm from Detroit." [Current via /film]

While certainly not as horrendous as one would expect, the trailer for The Kung-Fu Kid The Karate Kid does wonders for advancing the idea of alienation and persecution from the original.
This time, instead of being from Jersey, he's from America. Instead of California, he goes to China. Which makes loads of sense when young Jaden Smith runs afoul of the local Evil Kung-Fu Squad who terrorize him until Jackie Chan arrives to make amends for The Forbidden Kingdom.
But at least it's...well. I guess in context, they pretty much have the same trailer. Just swap out pounding bass for pounding synth:
