Apart from earth completing one revolution, the celebration has got one more reason. It all dates back to Julius Caesar. Well, actually that date was chosen in 153 B.C. by the Roman Senate. That didn't matter much though, the New Year's Eve date was celebrated whenever folks wanted to.........until Julius Caesar decided in 46 BC that it WOULD be celebrated on January 1st.
What kind of traditions do we follow on New Year's Day?Lots of them! Here's just a few.

Oh Viagra.
Sure, Pfizer’s wonder pill has side effects such as headaches, facial flushing, upset stomach, erections lasting more than four hours, bluish or sudden loss of vision. There’s one more risk to the pill that grants erections: Hearing loss.
Research published this week in Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery showed an association between long-term hearing loss and Viagra.
This side effect is already acknowledged by Viagra - especially after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration forced this labeling changes for oral erectile dysfunction medicines known as PDE5 inhibitors in 2007.
The research conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham looked into the data based on 11,525 men. Men who self-reported hearing problems were twice more likely to indicate that they used erectile dysfunction medication.
While it’s difficult to establish cause and effect in an observational study, these findings indicate that the FDA labeling was warranted, said study author Gerald McGwin, a professor of epidemiology at the UAB School of Public Health, in a taped news release.
The association was present for long-term hearing loss after using Viagra, and to a lesser extent other ED drugs such as Cialis and Levitra. The sample sizes for the two latter drugs were smaller.
Since Viagra increases blood flow to the penis, perhaps the drug increases blood flow to the ear causing damage, McGwin hypothesized.Oh Viagra.

New York, Jan 3 : American actor Tom Cruise
could end up being sued by a San Francisco advertising executive
for using a replica of Adolf Hitler's globe in his movie 'Valkyrie '
Robert Pritikin owns several of Hitler's artefacts, including the notorious globe, which the Fuehrer used to plan U-boat attacks from his compound in the Bavarian Alps.
Pritikin, who had bought Hitler's globe in 2007 for 100,000 dollars, decided to take legal action after he saw a copied version of the globe in Cruise's movie.
'Pritikin believes the globe should be used as a teaching tool so the lessons of Hitler's nightmare can keep history from repeating itself, ' the New York Post quoted investigator Paul Barresi, who was retained to look into the copying of the globe, as saying.
'Tom Cruise's use of the globe's likeness without our client's permission was likely just an oversight. We're confident this will all be quickly resolved out of court, ' Hanks said.
Pritikin, who recently put the Hitler items up for sale through businessman Peter Marino, hopes that Cruise may buy them.
'I think it would be a wonderful gesture of good will on Tom Cruise's part to purchase the globe along with all of the other Hitler artefacts owned by Mr. Pritikin and donate them to the Wiesenthal Centre, ' Barresi stated.
Representatives for Cruise and United Artists were unavailable for comments on the issue.

200 Dogs Sold at Wisconsin Dog Auction
Dog Auction In Wisconsin Draws Some Protestors
THORP, Wis.– A dog auction held Saturday at a stable near Thorp drew hundreds of people, including some who contended it wasn’t a humane way to sell the animals.
Organizers said about 600 people attended and about 200 dogs were sold. They described the auction as the first of its kind in Wisconsin.
Horst Stables manager Ken Stauffer disputed claims of those who opposed the auction.
“All the dogs we have here are high quality,” Stauffer said. He predicted before the auction that the dogs would go for $100 to $1,000 each.
An animal care inspector from the U.S. Department of Agriculture examined the dogs, he said. He also said the dogs had not been bred for fighting.
According to the bid book, most of the dogs were registered with the American Canine Association or the American Kennel Club.
Auctioneer Kevin Frese said making a purchase at the auction was the same as finding a dog through classified ads, “except here, you’ve got a better selection.”
Michelle Lipski of Oconomowoc said the dogs seemed to be in good health, but she said she was concerned about how they would be treated after being sold.
Those who adopt pets through humane societies often go through a screening process, but at auctions, the highest bidder gets the animal, she said.
“I would bet that some of the people here may be purchasing them for breeding,” she said. “It’s a quality-of-life issue for the dog.”
Lipski and Beth Madunic, also of Oconomowoc, bought 12 dogs and planned to donate them to a local shelter where they would be spayed or neutered and then placed in good homes, Lipski said.

Are cell phones dangerous?
Johnnie Cochran's widow, Dale, and his neurosurgeon Dr. Keith Black, Chairman of the Cedars-Sinai Department of Neurosurgery, discuss how cell phones may have led to Johnnie Cochran's death.
Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Brain Tumor Center
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center opened the Johnnie L. Cochran Brain Tumor Center in 2007 to shepherd basic research discoveries through patient trials and the government approval process. The Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Brain Tumor Center serves as a coordination point for the physicians who specialize in clinical trials, the data managers, and the clinical research nurses who interface with the Food and Drug Administration

By reading this article, coaches, athletes, parents and teachers will know the truth about anabolic steroid side effects and will be able to make their own informed decisions as to how bad they are. But I suspect that after reading what I have to say, as well as what the scientific literature says, the question of how bad steroids are will be a different question entirely; the only question remaining will be "why didn´t anyone tell me this before?"
Anabolic Steroid Side Effects:
1. Inhibition of Natural Hormones
The inhibition of natural hormones is probably the most common and probable side effect experienced from the use of anabolic steroids. In almost all cases, adding a hormone into your body will send a message to your endocrine system to stop producing it. This is because your body wants to remain in a very balanced state -- called "homeostasis,"
if I remember my high school biology class correctly. To maintain homeostasis, the body wants to avoid having too much of any particular hormone.
To achieve this, the body sends a message to the testicles to slow down, or even stop producing testosterone when there is too much circulating. Unfortunately, this happens when any kind of hormone is added into the body, so even if an athlete is not using testosterone, but is using other anabolic steroids, the body will still send this signal 99% of the time.
Of course different steroids cause varying degrees of inhibition ranging from total shut down of endogenous (natural) testosterone production, to very mild inhibition, where some natural hormones are still being produced and circulating. In almost all cases, this inhibition is over once the steroids aren´t active in the body anymore.
In the following charts, we can see a mirror image of the level of steroid in the body (Nandrolone), compared with the level of natural testosterone being produced. In other words, as the level of steroid rises (chart 2), the level of testosterone falls (chart 1), and vice versa:By reading this article, coaches, athletes, parents and teachers will know the truth... more
