Ron Asheton, a guitarist and founding member of the influential rock band The Stooges, was found dead at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Tuesday, police said.

The godfather of punk guitar, Ron Asheton of the Stooges, was found dead Tuesday in his Ann Arbor, Mich., home.
The Stooges emerged in 1967 out of Ann Arbor with Iggy Pop (aka Jim Osterberg) on vocals, Asheton on guitar and his younger brother, Scott Asheton, on drums. Dave Alexander played bass.

Sadly, it has been confirmed that Ron Asheton of legendary rock’n’roll band The Stooges was found dead in his Ann Arbor, Michigan home this morning. Together with Iggy Pop, Scott Asheton and Dave Alexander, Ron Asheton formed The Stooges in 1967, releasing three albums between 1969 and 1973, all of which appeared among Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time. Asheton also ranked #29 of the magazine’s greatest guitarists of all time.
