For the first time ever, and for a brief moment in time, two knowledgeable and highly credentialed public figures have commented on the fact that psychiatric medications cause violence and must be considered suspect in the case of the Newtown shooter. But then, as if it never happened, and as if psychiatric drugs could not possibly be implicated in violence, the issue was dropped by the media. http://www.naturalnews.com/038674_psychiatric_drugs_mass_murders_Sanjay_Gupta.htmlFor the first time ever, and for a brief moment in time, two knowledgeable and highly... more

America's 24-hour cable news channels is generally insufferable: The way journalism gets trumped by a cult of personality, the way speculation and editorializing is passed off as "analysis," the way talking heads recycle the news du jour in ideological rants. Still, some tragedies are so epic -- like the earthquake in Haiti -- they actually demand the scope of all-day coverage. And occasionally, amid all the ruin and hopelessness, cable personalities emerge as something like heroes. This time around, that person appears to be CNN chief medical correspondent, neurosurgeon at Emory University and the man-who-was-almost-surgeon-general, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.America's 24-hour cable news channels is generally insufferable: The way... more

Growing up we didn’t have the privilege of having swine flu, all we had was Flu-Regular, it’s crazy how far the world has come in just a few short years.
Along side this evolution of the flu we’ve also seen an evolution in other aspects of society. We saw colas evolve to include only 1 calorie. We saw Tyler Perry evolve from a no-name writer to someone the entire country can hate equally. We saw yogurt evolve into a pouch you can take on the go. We saw the internet evolve beyond just a series of tubes. We saw Dominos evolve into a place where no one actually wants to eat anymore. But more importantly, and relevant to this title piece, we saw the news media evolve into a friend that no one likes because they are always gossiping about things they don’t know about and freaking you out over nothing but you still hang out with for reasons far beyond you. And breathe.
OK so the point of that tangent, however mixed up it may be, is that the news has gotten crazy good at freaking people out. Now in most cases it’s over stupid shit like “Studies show a resurgence in scurvy.” People will chat about it at the water cooler, maybe drink a glass of orange juice, and leave it at that. But every once in a while the media knocks it out of the park with an idea that spreads like lice in grammar school and totally scares the entire world. Swine Flu is one of those cases. The question is, are they doing us a favor or are they giving us a metaphorical oil check if ya catch my drift?

CNN is reporting that its chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta today withdrew from consideration as the nation's surgeon general. The network said that its go-to health guy declined to comment.
News outlets reported in January that President Obama had offered Gupta, 39, a practicing neurosurgeon, the top health slot after a face-to-face in November.
The correspondent, who is known for reporting on public health crises from around the world, also had some political cred: he served as a White House fellow in 1997 and as a special adviser to then- first lady Hillary Clinton.
Last we checked, Gupta was reportedly weighing whether he could afford (or wanted) to trade in his lucrative TV and medical gigs for a government job -- and move his pregnant wife and two kids from his base in Atlanta to Washington, D.C.
Meanwhile, Obama is reportedly on the verge of naming someone to head to the embattled Food and Drug Administration, which is under fire for failing to protect the nation's food supply in the wake of a widespread salmonella outbreak. Among those reported to be in the running: Joshua Sharfstein -- also 39 -- and Margaret Hamburg, 54, who are also both physicians.CNN is reporting that its chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta today withdrew from... more

CNN's medical "expert" Dr. Sanjay Gupta is the man Obama wants for Surgeon General. This is a sick choice for the post given that Gupta got many key facts wrong in a CNN "Fact Check" report he did on Moore's pro-universal healthcare film Sicko. Gupta also displayed thinly veiled contempt for the state run healthcare systems in other countries –– not a good sign given that Obama is hoping to install a similar system here in the U.S. during his presidency. Moore didn't let Gupta get away with his shoddy treatment, curing the situation by calling Gupta on his lies and misinformation in a detailed post on his website and in a follow-up debate hosted by Larry King.
Really Obama – Gupta? Can't you find someone more qualified than a TV spin doctor to heal America?CNN's medical "expert" Dr. Sanjay Gupta is the man Obama wants for... more

Maybe it's because I was born a couple of months after Woodstock and wasn't around when marijuana was as common as iPods are today, but I'm constantly amazed that after all these years--and all the wars on drugs and all the public-service announcements--nearly 15 million Americans still use marijuana at least once a month. California and 10 other states have already decriminalized marijuana for medical use. Now two of those states--Colorado and Nevada--are considering ballot initiatives that would legalize up to an ounce of pot for personal use by people 21 and older, whether or not there is a medical need.
This article contains soooo much misinformation re: Cannabis that it is almost hard to believe that it was written by an actual Physician...and potential Surgeon General.Maybe it's because I was born a couple of months after Woodstock and wasn't... more
