It's always interesting to see how the commercial American film awards differ from the British. Yesterday we saw the Golden Globes honouring The Social Network as the best of the best - winning an impressive four awards including best dramatic film of the year. The Baftas however, haven't even nominated it in the best picture of the year category, opting instead to give an impressive 14 nods to the British The King's Speech with Darren Aronofsky's ballet psycho-thriller Black Swan a close second with 12 nominations, followed by Christopher Nolan's Inception with nine nominations - a film which didn't win a single Golden Globe. Don't forget that we the public can decide who wins the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award. The nominees this year are: Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield, Tom Hardy, Aaron Johnson and Emma Stone.

Tonight saw the 2010 awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts take place at London’s Royal Opera House. The BBC have broadcast the ceremony since, both in the UK and on their BBC America channel though - rather appallingly - this broadcast was purposefully scheduled to not take place live but after a two hour delay. Imagine if the Oscars were broadcast in this way…!?
After the break, the full list of winners and a few tidbits about the ceremony as broadcast.
Here are the main awards as listed on the BAFTA official winner’s list - so not in show order at all.

British cinema's annual gathering of the great and the good (or Goode, if you were on A Single Man's aisle) was the story of two films at The Royal Opera House. Avatar and The Hurt Locker each featured in eight categories, including Best Film and Best Director, while British hopes rested with An Education and its terrific, star-making turn from Carey Mulligan (one half of the terrifyingly-monikered 'Carbeouf' with new squeeze Shia LeBeouf).
It was The Hurt Locker, though, that stole the night, winning Best Film and Best Director, while all but sweeping the technical categories. Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan, meanwhile, took full advantage of being on home turf to win Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, for A Single Man and An Education.

I don't know why, but the TV baftas always make me cringe a bit when it comes to red carpet clothing. I think it's because the event just isn't the same as the Golden Globes, The Oscars and, well, the actual BAFTAs!

Rags-to-riches story “Slumdog Millionaire” continued its fairy-tale journey Sunday, winning seven prizes, including best picture, at the British Academy Film Awards and sealing its place as favorite for the Oscars later this month.
Kate Winslet and Mickey Rourke also gained Oscar momentum with acting wins — Winslet for her role as a former Nazi concentration camp guard in “The Reader,” Rourke for his career-reviving performance as a washed-up athlete in “The Wrestler.” Heath Ledger won a posthumous supporting actor award for The Dark Knight.”
“It’s such a pleasure to be back here, out of the darkness,” said Rourke.
After her onstage emotional meltdown at the Golden Globes last month, Winslet was a model of composure, thanking her parents, sitting in the audience, “who I will not look at right now, otherwise I will burst into tears.”
“Slumdog,” Danny Boyle’s film about a Mumbai street boy’s rise from poverty to game-show triumph, went into the ceremony with 11 nominations and won prizes for best film, best director, original screenplay, music, cinematography, editing and sound.
The low-budget film, shot partly in Hindi, has gone from rank outsider to Academy Awards favorite since it won four trophies at the Golden Globe awards last month and became a box-office hit.
Its makers are still getting used to the change.
“I thought at one stage we were going straight to DVD,” said screenwriter Simon Beaufoy.
The film has caused controversy in India, where some have complained it shows the country in an unflattering light, and others have said its title insults the poor.
Boyle dedicated his award partly to the people of Mumbai, where it was shot — and also to people closer to home.
“The wiring in my dad’s house blew overnight, and it’s just a a big shout-out to everyone who helped him get the extension cable in so he could watch this on television,” Boyle said...Rags-to-riches story “Slumdog Millionaire” continued its fairy-tale... more

Movie fans were stunned to see Angelina Jolie turn on hubby Brad Pitt and call him a “fucking moron” for insisting they attend the ceremony despite having zero chance of winning. The sultry star went on to publicly accuse her partner of being deluded about his acting abilities and saying he looked like a real gay boy with his new moustache.

The shortlist for this year's BAFTA awards ceremony has been announced with Kate Winslet picking up two Best Actress nominations for her roles in The Reader and Revolutionary Road.
Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' stole the headlines earlier this week for sweeping the board at the Golden Globes, and with 11 nominations at this year's BAFTAs, it'd be a pretty safe bet to assume it's gonna do pretty well this side of the pond. David Fincher's 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' has also received 11 nominations.
And what would any early-2009 awards ceremony be without a Heath Ledger nomination? Nothing, hence why he's up for a posthumous award for his role as, yup you guessed it, The Joker, one of nine 'The Dark Knight' is up for. Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep also feature amongst the nominations. The shortlist for this year's BAFTA awards ceremony has been announced with Kate... more

Controversial BBC presenter Jonathan Ross has been signed up to host this year's Bafta Film Awards, despite being at the centre of last year's "Manuelgate," which saw him the proud catalyst in the BBC's highest ever number of complaints.
'Wossy' is set to host the awards only days after his much-publicised BBC suspension ends. There had been rumours as to whether he would be hosting the awards, but he announced the gig over his Twitter profile.
