San Francisco government seems to think that they are doing you a favor by letting you pay your property tax and parking tickets, etc. by charging you an additional fee to so online. How many times has this happened to you? After spending 30 minutes circling the block searching for a parking space, you finally find a spot only to realize that you have no change to feed the meter?
To make parking more convenient cities like White Plains, N.Y., have begun installing smart parking meters in their garages. These new meters accept cash, credit card and now phone payments. A new system has been installed allowing drivers to register for a free service, which allows you to enter your space and credit card number via your cell phone. And if you’re payment is about to expire you can set up an alert which will warn you 10 minutes before your expiration time that you need to refill your meter.

Though we may still lament the issues of driving and searching for parking, new technologies like the smart meters in White Plains and parking alert systems by Smart Grains will ensure that we waste fewer minutes searching for parking thereby reducing fuel consumption.

Be careful when picking a vanity licence plate for your car. In Birmingham, Alabama, it's the policty for traffic wardens to enter seven letter Xs onto their forms when they issue tickets to cars without plates.
Sadly Scottie Roberson, chose exactly seven X's for his plate, as it's a combination of his nickname "Racer X", and his favourite number, seven.
He's now been receiving up to 10 fines a day. There'd been a lack of interest in his problem, but since going public with them officials have arranged for the fines to be dismissed and are working on a new ticketing system for cars without plates.

The City of Austin will begin using 20 of its new parking meters Wednesday. The new solar-powered meters have been installed downtown between Second and 10th streets.
500 of the new meters, which cost the city about $8.4 million, will replace nearly 3, 800 coin-only parking meters throughout the downtown Austin.
The older meters broke down 14,000 times last year, causing the city to lose as much as $500,000 in fees, fines and staff time.
Stickers dispensed by the machines should be placed in the windshield on the side nearest the sidewalk.
