Brandon Boyd is the lead singer of the multi-platinum band Incubus, a prolific artist, an award-winning surfer, a credible musician and a female ‘heart throb.’ Despite all of his time in the spotlight, Boyd remains as friendly, down to earth, ego-free and socially aware as ever.
This summer, Brandon Boyd teamed up with artist and friend, Kristin Klosterman, for the TOMS Shoes Collaborative Canvas Project. The pair created works of art on massive canvases, which were then cut up to create special limited-edition TOMS Shoes.
Causecast’s Brandon Deroche caught up with Boyd at the release party to speak with him about how the shoes came to be, the higher form of communication presented in music and the hope for a singular state of mind known as peace.
Causecast: Can we talk briefly about how this came to be, and was it a tough decision to make?
Brandon Boyd: It was not tough to decide to want to do. I had met some of the people from TOMS previously and we talked about doing some type of collaborative project, but we didn’t really know what. We just knew that there was some sort of similar energy at work. So I kept seeing them, we kept just sort of brainstorming, and I was just saying to a friend before that I kind of assumed that they had already done a project like this. I think it would have come up sooner had I known. And we started brainstorming, you know, this came up, this idea of doing original canvases that they made into shoes. They hadn’t done it before so we were like “let’s do that.” And then they asked if I knew anybody that I thought would want to collaborate with something like that. So my friend Kristen is a friend, a really good artist, and my neighbor too, so it all just sort of came together, it wasn’t hard. It was hard to do because…it hadn’t been done before and there was no like, road map for it. Untreated, unstretched canvas is really hard to paint on too. So that part was difficult.
CC: That’s what I wanted to ask you – collaboration in music is one thing, but when it comes to painting, how do you decide what you want to paint together?
BB: (laughs) It seems kind of boring to present it like this, but…I never know what I’m going to paint until I’m painting it, and in this case with the TOMS collaboration, it was no different. Got to Kristin’s studio, and they had massive pieces of canvases in big rolls, and we rolled them out and duct taped them to the floor, and had a bunch of paint…just started painting, so…that’s my favorite way to paint. I don’t really like pre-meditating things too much. I’m still hell-bent on like the experience of painting, you know the process of painting, as opposed to like trying to achieve an immediate end result. So, I started working and the first canvas I did on my own, I was kind of feeling it out. On the second canvas, the one we ended up collaborating on, I started to get this flow, line work. I think some of the better shoes in the collaboration are from the second canvas, that was the one that Kristin and I did together.

Activision has finally decided to spill the entire track listing for its upcoming Guitar Hero Smash Hits, one of the five “Hero” games scheduled for the remainder of 2009.
Taking the “best” songs from the previous versions of the Guitar Hero series, Smash Hits has an amazing soundtrack. As the name implies, they’re almost entirely “smash hits,” with few exceptions. It’s also important to note that all of the tracks are masters, and in some cases live tracks. As far as the game is concerned, it brings some of the songs to the full band experience for the first time. It's what Activision is calling "innovation," which is questionable.
Guitar Hero Smash Hits is scheduled to his PlayStation 3, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii on June 16.

Rapper/producer and one third of the music group N.E.R.D Pharrell Williams has made himself into a quiet, yet powerful force in the music industry. Releasing the Billionaire Boys Club clothing line, the Ice Cream shoe line, five albums to date, and earning two Grammy Awards for his production work on Justin Timberlake's solo debut Justified, Pharrell's influence is undeniable. He recently talked about his inspiration regarding his fashion industry endeavors.
"Billionaire Boys Club is a lifestyle brand," he told the Associated Press. "Ice Cream is a little more affordable, but BBC is different. I created that brand because I had a lot of admiration for Ralph Lauren, but I wanted to take that concept and pretend that Willy Wonka was the head designer. So it's different, and the clothes are made in Japan, so there's a price that goes along with that. Ice Cream, on the other hand, is like our silliness mixed with a huge, huge respect for skating and how I saw things when I was a kid. It's kind of like me making the clothes I never got to have when I was 15."
According to him, a television show about the Ice Cream shoe brand is currently in development, but he declined to elaborate on the topic. In any case, a television show would only add to the large list of projects Pharrell is currently involved in. In addition to his work outside of music, he is currently finishing up work on Shakira's album, Usher's upcoming CD, and will soon be hitting the studio with Rihanna, Incubus, and Sara Bareilles. His production work with the diverse group of artists only signifies his affinity for eclectic music.

Tom Morello is doing a Justice Tour and he is playing the Boston State House, and a show in Boston to benefit Healthcare-NOW! Read below:
Tom Morello, the guitarist for Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave who plays firebrand folk guitar as The Nightwatchman, launches the Justice Tour in Los Angeles on April 15. The two-week outing stops in New York, New Orleans, Asheville, NC, Washington, DC and Boston before concluding with a May Day show in Chicago on May 1.
Each stop of the Justice Tour will include a day of activism to focus on a sphere of social justice in America: homelessness (Los Angeles), safe, secure and affordable housing (New Orleans), a living wage (Asheville), peace and veterans care (Washington, DC), affordable healthcare (Boston) and labor organizing (Chicago). In addition, Amnesty International?s TearItDown.org Campaign to Close Guantanamo, Project Noise and Morello’s own Axis Of Justice have joined as partner organizations throughout the tour. The itinerary also includes a previously announced show April 17 at New York’s Nokia Theater to benefit Road Recovery, a nonprofit that helps young people forge a future free from addiction and other adversities.
"There has been much talk about change this election season, but real change must start with people, not politicians. No matter who is elected, we the people must create justice on the ground," said Morello, who will perform on the Justice Tour as The Nightwatchman.
Sharing the stage with The Nightwatchman will be different special guests on each stop of the Justice Tour. Among those who have signed on are Ben Harper, Slash, Perry Farrell, Sen Dog of Cypress Hill, Davey Havok of AFI, Boots Riley of the Coup, Maynard James Keenan of Tool and Puscifer, Shooter Jennings, State Radio, Mike Einzinger of Incubus and MC5 founder Wayne Kramer. In addition, each stop of the tour will include a local special guest artist.
While the tour’s activism highlights the hard work that must be done to achieve social justice, its mood is celebratory. "Each night of this tour is going to be a freedom party," Morello said. "We are going to create a little bit of the world we?d like to see."
"Throughout American history, progressive change has always been driven by activists who blow the winds of social change," said Danny Goldberg, longtime activist and band manager and the author of How The Left Lost Teen Spirit. " Without such energy, even the most idealistic public officials cannot prevail against the self-interested partisans of the status quo."
Tour dates are below:
04/15 - Los Angeles, Troubadour, Axis of Justice and People Assisting the Homeless
04/17 - New York, Nokia Theater, Road Recovery
04/20 - New Orleans, Parish Room at Sweet Home New Orleans and the House of Blues Amnesty International
04/22 - Asheville, NC, Grey Eagle Tavern, Just Economics & Music Hall
04/24 - Washington, DC, Black Cat, Iraq Veterans Against the War

Everyone has that band that you have followed from the beginning. You remember when they were cool, back when they were relative unknowns. Then they become popular and everyone loves them forcing you to outwardly hate them and call them "sell outs" to make yourself feel better about supporting the band since its inception.
For some, that band might be Metallica or whoever. For me, it was Incubus. I watched them grow from a small club band to a main stage headliner. Now they have crashed and burned with two album "A Crow Left of the Murder" and "Light Grenades" that are a very different sound from "Morning View." I didn't care I still bought them.
News comes that Incubus will be taking a break so the band can pursue other things. For instance, guitarist Mike Einziger will unveil an orchestral piece at Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA.
For Einziger, the concert will serve as a precursor to his enrollment in Harvard’s music school to study composition next year. But he’s not the only one returning to higher education, as Brandon Boyd also plans to enroll in a university art program.
Brandon says about the band's hiatus:
“I’m of the mind to say it wouldn’t be a bad thing to disappear for a year or two years,” he says. “A lot of people would say culture moves too fast and you need to remind people, but I would argue there’s not any rush. Maybe they’ll be a sex scandal or an arrest or something to keep us in the news.”
Fans still have a chance to catch the band in action before the break: Incubus will play the VH1 Rock Honors tribute to The Who on July 12, alongside Tenacious D, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters and The Flaming Lips.
The show will tape in Los Angeles on July 12 and is scheduled to premiere on July 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on VH1, VH1 Classic and MHD.
