For many on Facebook, relationship status is a key feature. HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - As Connecticut lawmakers consider updating state law to conform with a court ruling that allows same-sex marriages, opponents of gay marriage fear their effort will go too far to promote homosexuality.
The legislators' work is being spurred by last year's state Supreme Court decision that concluded same-sex couples have the right to wed in Connecticut. The state's 2005 civil union law doesn't give same-sex couples equal status of married heterosexual couples, the court said.
The General Assembly's judiciary committee is considering a bill that would remove gender references in current state laws and transform same-sex civil unions into legally recognized marriages as of October 2010. California's battle over same-sex marriage went before the state's highest court, with civil rights lawyers seeking to overturn a voter-approved ban on gay weddings.
Hundreds of supporters and opponents gathered outside the Supreme Court in San Francisco for the hearing, which came 10 months after the court legalized gay marriage in a landmark ruling last May.
That ruling was cast into doubt last November when voters passed a change to California's constitution that redefined marriage in the state as a union between a man and a woman.
Supporters of same-sex marriage are seeking to have the results of the referendum, known as Proposition 8, quashed on the grounds that minority rights should not be vulnerable to a simple majority vote.California's battle over same-sex marriage went before the state's highest... more

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California Supreme Court justices are hearing arguments on a lawsuits seeking to overturn the state's voter-approved ban on same-sex nuptials.
The hearing got under way Thursday morning as hundreds of people demonstrated outside the courthouse and watched the proceedings on a large television screen.
Proposition 8, passed in November, took away the right for gay couples to marry.
Gay rights groups, couples and more than a dozen local governments are urging the court to overturn the measure on the grounds that it was put before voters improperly, or at least prematurely.
