A little less than a year ago- my second essay was about Michele Bachmann and her ambition to run for the presidency of the United States. I’m glad to report that she has stopped her pursuit because of her awful results in Iowa (second to last place). Just like Napoléon, she had her Waterloo moment (Waterloo, Iowa that is).A little less than a year ago- my second essay was about Michele Bachmann and her... more

For those who read the 1lovejoy blog, you are well aware of this blog’s disdain for Rupert Murdoch questionable journalistic practices; his business dealings and neo conservative politics. It’s not surprising that Mr. Murdoch’s companies are in a bit of a pickle. He has weathered scandal before but somehow this phone-hacking scandal is different. It shows how Mr. Murdoch and his hand-picked lieutenants created a culture of pay-offs and intimidation. It seemed to be inevitable that one of his news media outlets would take things too far in order to get a story. For those who read the 1lovejoy blog, you are well aware of this blog’s disdain... more

Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary define the word Malcontent as a discontented person: a one who bears a grudge from a sense of thwarted ambition b: one who is in active opposition to an established order of government: REBEL. In the United States there are two groups that are the true sense of this definition- the far left and the neo-conservatives. Both groups seem to be in opposition of reason. In Volume 1, we discussed the motives of the far left. Now in Volume 2, we will examine neo- conservatives in the same matter.Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary define the word Malcontent as a discontented... more

“Yellow Cake” is a short animated film by the award-winning Canadian animator Nick Cross. Cross explains that he got the idea for the film in 2003, in light of speculation during the Bush administration that Iraq was buying uranium powder called “Yellow Cake.” Yellow Cake Uranium was one of the Weapons of Mass Destruction that Iraq allegedly possessed. Cross’s fantastic animated epic becomes a modern parable of terrorism and catastrophic war, a lamentable tragedy featuring geopolitical bullying, social unrest and worker revolt. In the end, as with most revolutions, the revolt is both crushed by foreign intervention and corrupted from the inside until it becomes as evil as the regime the workers had originally fought.
“Yellow Cake” initially lures the viewer into a tale of pleasant mirth, filled with adorable blue creatures who spend all day baking and then eating their own exquisitely delicious yellow cakes. But soon the tide turns, and the small town of happy little bakers is driven to terrorism by the greed of their leader and cake-hungry fat cats, resulting in the town’s ultimate catastrophic destruction. It seems that no matter what they do, the oppressed have no hope left.
This piece presents a number of colorful illustrations from the film, as well as the remarkable animated short, “Yellow Cake.”

THIS IS NO DRILL !
100 years of congressional efforts to limit corporate spending in elections going down the drain !
This is a pretty depressing saga unfolding right before our eyes and it's another reason why we need cameras in the Supreme Court so we can view the mockery Roberts is making out of the Third Branch of government. They are about to grant corporations the right to spend unlimited amounts of money to attack political candidates right up until an election, which would make destroy the very fabric of our voting structure. Did you know that a corporation is an individual in Scalia's mind?

Unprecedented
Watching the Supreme Court make its campaign finance jurisprudence disappear.
http://www.slate.com/id/2227798/
The Supreme Court is returning early from its summer recess to consider a potential watermark case that couldoverturn a century of campaign finance restrictions and clear the way for unregulated spending by corporations on political campaigns. The case, Citizens United v. The Federal Election Commission, has grown from a limited question about a political documentary to a broad challenge to the government's right to restrict corporations from spending money to support or oppose political candidates.
Encompassing questions on First Amendment rights, the power of corporations and the influence of money on political elections, it's no wonder the case has created an assortment of strange bedfellows. Conservatives and liberals appear on both sides, either to defend the government's right to restrict corporate political advocacy or, on the other side, to argue that such regulations are a violation of the First Amendment.
To help sort through the complicated background and ramifications of the case, Bill Moyers talks with two prominent lawyers: Trevor Potter, president and general counsel of The Campaign Legal Center, who has submitted a brief to the court in support of the F.E.C.; and Floyd Abrams, a First Amendment attorney, who will be arguing before the court on behalf of Citizens United. http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/09042009/profile.html

To those in the Current community not familiar with the term "economic shock therapy," I urge you to read 'The Shock Doctrine' by Naomi Klein.
The idea that rapid privatization was necessary to create a successful economy is a basic tenet of Friedmann-omics and the Neo-Conservative ideology (or Neo-Liberal to the rest of the world) that the IMF and World Bank forced upon countries as preconditions to giving them loans.
According to a paper to be published in the medical journal The Lancet, this economic theory caused over 1M deaths in the former Soviet bloc in the first half of the 1990s alone... and that only includes men... I can't even imagine how many have died worldwide because of this theory...To those in the Current community not familiar with the term "economic shock... more
