Anti-Pop is an art movement and philosophy based on Dada, Pop, and other Anti-Art movements of the past; it being conceived as a direct response to what is becoming a totalitarian media complex that bombards us with information and ideas that may or may not be objective or independent of their corporate and political agendas. It is a fact that all mainstream media we are exposed to on television is controlled and operated by no more than six corporations. Their reticence in touching upon stories that could potentially harm their corporate interests or benefactors has been evident in the past. State influenced media is of course nothing new. The key to influencing society is by direct corporate ownership and control of it’s media. We are the nameless and faceless, sorted into neat little demographics based on what prevarication we would most easily swallow. We suggest a deconstruction of “popular” images as they are extraneous in the context of society as a whole. We believe art should not be a celebration of society or culture but a consequence of it. We find it exceedingly difficult to participate in the creation of that which is innocuous by nature, thereby ignoring the tempestuous sociopolitical environment we have come of age in. We are the sum total of a generation nurtured by television, play station, and bad Pixar blockbusters. A public school system taken over by the state has left us bereft of culture, artistic intent, or even basic individuality. We have been duped to the point that even our counterculture has been co opted by corporate interests. Pop bands indistinguishable from one another, “alternative” clothing selected and available at your nearest shopping mall, rebellion prepackaged for consumption by youths who have nothing to be disaffected by. Our art was born out of a necessity to attack popular culture’s contrived enterprise, and the media’s perpetuation of it. In the tradition of Dadaists, and Anti Artists before us the current environment obliges a reaction and a consequence, this is our attempt to provide it.
