Students from around the world came to see Barack Obama sworn in as President of the United States. Some waited 12 hours in the winter cold to get a good spot for the presidential address, while others watched it from the comfort of a warm cafe. Either way they were keen to tell The Real News their views on Obama's speech and his presidency.

Pepe Escobar: What was Obama exactly saying in his acceptance speech?
President Barack Obama's highly anticipated inauguration speech has been widely praised as serious and/or somber. Pepe Escobar argues that for all its soaring rhetoric, it was very short on specifics. It did not even mention China and Russia. It made a cursory acknowledgement of the Muslim world. It ignored the Americas - and native Americans. It did not renounce the war on terror framework. It certainly encouraged honesty, hard work and determination. But while claiming to set a new era of responsibility, Obama seemed to place most of this new responsibility over God's shoulders. Dr. Martin Luther King in his own time had been much more incisive.
Pepe Escobar, born in Brazil is the roving correspondent for Asia Times and an analyst for The Real News Network. He's been a foreign correspondent since 1985, based in London, Milan, Los Angeles, Paris, Singapore, and Bangkok. Since the late 1990s, he has specialized in covering the arc from the Middle East to Central Asia, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has made frequent visits to Iran and is the author of Globalistan and also Red Zone Blues: A Snapshot of Baghdad During the Surge both published by Nimble Books in 2007.

BEIJING — The official Chinese translation of President Barack Obama's inauguration speech omitted his references to communism and dissent, and a live broadcast on state television Wednesday quickly cut away to the anchor when sensitive topics were mentioned.
The comments by the newly installed U.S. president veered into politically sensitive territory for China's ruling Communist Party, which maintains a tight grip over the Internet and the entirely state-run media...
