A home-made explosive device filled with unknown chemicals detonated at Aiea High School while students were in between classes. Two students -- bother underclassmen -- and two adult employees suffered minor injuries. Emergency officials say they were lucky.
The improvised explosive device or I-E-D detonated in a stairwell. It's still unclear how it got there. Emergency crews responded to Aiea High School at 9-10 Tuesday morning after reports of a chemical explosion on campus. Two students were in the stairwell when it happened.
"The two students one male one female -- both minors -- was in the close vicinity when the initial explosion happened," said Bryan Cheplic, spokesperson of the city's Emergency Medical Services Division.
The explosion happened in the school's science building. Both students suffered skin and eye irritation. Emergency crews described the device as a water bottle filled with a brown liquid.
"A chemical in it that we've identified as a type of an acid," said Capt. Terry Seelig of the Honolulu Fire Department. "It's a chemical reaction process that takes place in a sealed container so it has no predictability as to how explosive it will be or when it will happen.">A home-made explosive device filled with unknown chemicals detonated at Aiea High... more
