Just when you thought Google Latitude would no longer haunt your dreams, the service has been updated to make it a smidge creepier than before. Now Latitude tracks your location history and alerts you when your friends are nearby -- two add-ons that could make stalking that much easier!
Location History is the creepiest of all, so thankfully this service is only for personal use and is not shared with Latitude friends. The way it works is Google pinpoints your trail of breadcrumbs and determines where you were by where you paused.
From there, you can check your history and piece together last night's manic bender, or, you know, a harmless cross-country trip. And if the ghost of your whereabouts proves to be more than you can handle, you can delete selected history or the entirety of it at any time. Despite sending shivers down my spine, Location History could have some practical uses. And while it's currently private, the rise in popularity of location-based services such as Loopt, Stalqer and FourSquare may convince Google to later selectively publicize Location History to friends.

Have you ever wanted to see the exact location of all your friends and family? With Google Latitude now you can. Using google's new gadget/plug-in you can now request to share locations with your friends and keep tabs on them where ever they go. This social networking minded release from Google, which can be used on your phone or computer, appears to be the latest and greatest tool in internet stalking or is it just a convenient way to see if your buddies are in the area? Does "big brother" have to request to see your location or is that readily available to them?
"When you want to see someone on the map you need to ask them to share locations with you. They will receive a request by email to which they need to opt in. One can choose to share one’s location, reject it, or as a compromise, to only see the other party’s location but stay invisible. Then you will find markers with your friend’s icons placed on top of a Google Maps widget, and you can access more info from there. Google also notes that you can share a status message, which synchronizes with Google Talk.
Using just the iGoogle widget without further plugins, you’ll need to update your location manually by entering e.g. your city and country. If you run Google Latitude on your phone (available in 27 countries so far, Google says, allowing you to “call, SMS, IM, or email each other within the app”), Google offers you to have your coordinates be updated automatically. And even if you’re on the computer, Google offers you to download their Gears plugin which they say uses wireless signals to determine your computer’s location. When Latitude tried to determine my location with Gears, it was spot on and put me into my home street."

It's not enough to simply text a friend and ask where they are these days. Thankfully, with Google's (slightly scary) new 'Latitude' addition to Google Maps, now you can find out where they are without them really knowing and turn up to surprise them. The new service allows mobile phone users to share their location with friends and family and spot which of their contacts are nearby. Once signed up, an icon of the user's location, as well as their chums', will appear on Google Maps on their phone.
It's accurate to within a hundred yards or so, and at the moment it's only available on Blackberry phones and devices running Windows Mobile and Symbian 360 but it'll be rolled out to iPhone and Google Android users in the next couple of weeks.
Not quite over that ex and want to gatecrash their romantic lunch with their new partner to confess love and sob into their sleeve? Latitude!
Friends no longer inviting you out on nights but you're not going to let that stop you turning up anyway, if only you knew where they were knocking back the drinks? Latitude!
