I'm so confused. I thought we were doing well.
After 9/11, those of us who were not in the military got our marching orders. We were told to go forth and shop, shop, shop, spend, spend, spend.(Link.) Keep going to Disney World, keep flying the airlines. Whatever you do, don't let this shocking, horrific and historic event cause you to change anything you do, just keep spending.
It was easy to be a hero back then. Patriotism was as simple as dropping a dime. All you had to do was finance an SUV with no money down, grab an extra case of Coors Light, or tip a little extra at the strip club. You would do those things, if you cared at all about freedom. If you didn't give Sindee that extra five-spot in her thong, well then, the terrorists win!

Look how proud Joe Biden Vice President is. But do you see the number in the title? Then read this: “…There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time. The beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition…” - Revelation 17:9-11Look how proud Joe Biden Vice President is. WASHINGTON -- Industries from health care to agribusiness to mining that stand to lose under President Barack Obama's policy agenda are ramping up lobbying campaigns to derail or modify his plans.
The day after Mr. Obama formally laid out his policy goals in his first address to Congress, the former chief executive of HCA Inc. unveiled a $20 million campaign to pressure Democrats to enact health-care legislation based on free-market principles.
"What you see is when the government gets involved, you run out of money and health care gets rationed," former CEO Richard Scott said Wednesday, after announcing the creation of Conservatives for Patients Rights.
Mr. Obama's ambitious agenda -- ranging from expanding health-care coverage to cutting farm subsidies to cutting wasteful defense projects -- touches almost every part of the U.S. economy. It threatens to disrupt the business models of a broad swath of America's biggest companies.WASHINGTON -- Industries from health care to agribusiness to mining that stand to lose... more

Such a strange thing for Jindal to say, especially since he hails from the state that was ravaged by Katrina. (Which, ironically, was the subject of its own equally awkward moment). The volcano monitoring program was on a list of Republican talking points at one stage, but virtually none of them ran with it, apparently figuring that there were much better scabs to pick at.
And I know: I'm piling on a little. This was going to be an awfully tough speech to deliver, almost no matter what its content. With the possible exception of Jim Webb in 2007, the minority party reaction speeches have always tended toward extreme lameness.
I just want to know who wrote the speech and who vetted it. Because it was manifestly at odds with the talents of the guy who delivered it.

Is it a coincidence that that the governors who are rejecting monies from the stimulus plan also have the highest unemployment rates among people of color in their respective states?
Joan Walsh comments, "Bobby Jindal's Louisiana? The black unemployment rate is 9.4 percent; the white rate is 3.3 percent. Rick Perry's Texas? The black rate is 9.7 percent; the rate for whites, 4.3 percent."

Why doesn't Obama choose George Soros or Paul Krugman as the Commerce Secretary instead of someone like Gregg? This bipartisanship policy of him doesn't make sense to me at all. Bipartisanship at this critical time means to sacrifice the country, to have those in the government who made this mess in the first place. Why doesn't Obama choose George Soros or Paul Krugman as the Commerce Secretary... more

Remove $50 Billion in nuke/coal funding from stimulus bill!
The compromise Senate economic stimulus bill still contains authority for $50 Billion in taxpayer money for loan guarantees for construction of new nuclear reactors and "clean coal" plants.
Fortunately, the stimulus bill passed by the House of Representatives does not include any loan guarantees for these dirty and unsafe technologies.
The House and Senate will have to reconcile the two versions of this bill before it can reach President Obama's desk.
It is essential that the House version prevail on this issue and we need to make sure everyone in the House is aware what is at stake.
Please take a moment to send the letter below to your House member (note: this will automatically direct your letter to your House member, based on your address). We encourage you to add your own comments and thoughts to the letter, if you'd like.
After sending the letter, please call your House member (Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121) and leave a short message: Please take out nuclear/coal loan guarantees from the stimulus bill.
Thanks for taking action!Remove $50 Billion in nuke/coal funding from stimulus bill!

Does a nearly $1 trillion economic stimulus bill in the wake of $700 billion package that seems to have had little effect sound excessive to you? If so, you're not alone: Two U.S. senators are negotiating to cut $88 billion out of the version of the bill that passed the House of Representatives on January 28.
Sounds reasonable. Until you take a closer look at the proposed cuts, that is.
Among the biggest losers are science, energy and education. Huh? We may be biased over here at Wired Science, but in our view, science, energy and education should be at the top of the list of stimulus priorities rather than the first to go.Does a nearly $1 trillion economic stimulus bill in the wake of $700 billion package... more
