when massive radio consolidation resulted in stations constantly spinning the same songs across the country.
The perfect antidote to the drudgery on the radio dial since 1996, The Local Community Radio Act (HR 1147 / S 592)
For musicians, Local Community Radio Act will be invaluable. It’s become nearly impossible for local bands to get their songs played in their hometowns as playlists have become automated and computers have replaced the local deejay with her ear to the ground. Gone are the days when artists could bring their music down to the local radio station for a chance to be “discovered” as the next big thing. As far as commercial radio goes, you’re lucky if anyone’s at the station at all.

we created a homeless tent city called “Without Housing” in front of the Mayor’s office. More than 100 homeless people, along with students, ministers and other friends, were to make the tent city our home until we got real homes.
Within hours we were at a stand-off with the police.
The Vice Mayor came to “Without Housing” to negotiate with us. We were told that if we went to another park we would not be bothered for this one night, but if we stayed here we would be arrested. 16 of us stayed and were arrested. The next day, the judge said the arrests were unconstitutional and immediately released our 16 brave leaders.

Workers without a four-year degree have borne the brunt of recent layoffs, Latinos most of all. That's why, of the 30 fastest growing occupations in America, half require a Bachelor's degree or more. By 2016, four out of every 10 new jobs will require at least some advanced education or training.
Of course, we've heard all this year after year after year after year -- and far too little has changed. Certainly it hasn't changed in too many overcrowded Latino schools; it hasn't changed in too many inner-city schools that are seeing dropout rates of over 50 percent. It's not changing not because we're lacking sound ideas or sensible plans
I think you'd all agree that the time for finger-pointing is over. The time for holding us -- holding ourselves accountable is here. What's required is not simply new investments, but new reforms. It's time to expect more from our students. It's time to start rewarding good teachers, stop making excuses for bad ones. It's time to demand results from government at every level. It's time to prepare every child, everywhere in America, to out-compete any worker, anywhere in the world.

If you're looking for a microcosm of European Muslim society, one that exemplifies all the challenges and opportunities faced by immigrants from Muslim countries, The Netherlands may not immediately come to mind. Often overshadowed by the larger Muslim populations in Germany, Britain or France, The Netherlands has been the home of a number of personalities hostile to Islam and Muslims, including right wing politician Geert Wilders, activist and former MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, murdered filmmaker Theo Van Gogh - all of whom have stirred up emotions of Muslims far from Europe. At the same time, Muslims in The Netherlands (who are primarily of Turkish origin) have quietly learned from their experiences and have broken barriers in political and social life - often well before counterparts elsewhere in Europe and other Muslim minority countries.

The U.S. government got into the banking business in a huge way Friday when it took over a third of Citigroup and shook up the board of directors.

The investor — who was the only one to press for details on Jobs' health — had asked when the board knew Jobs planned to step away from his daily duties. Apple director Arthur Levinson responded that since Jobs announced Jan. 14 that he needed to go on leave, "nothing has changed."
Jobs, who turned 54 on Tuesday, was not at the meeting. At one point, investors stood up and sang "Happy Birthday" to him, at the urging of one shareholder. The investor — who was the only one to press for details on Jobs' health... more

"If you shine this into someone's eyes, you will momentarily disorient them. But unlike the previous flashlight it cannot be used to inflict unintended damage or used to strike someone around the head," LAPD chief William Bratton told a news conference.
The American Civil Liberties Union welcomed the new flashlights, which were purchased by the city for $US1 million and will be distributed to all LAPD officers starting in June.
Did you know that more than 50 incidents involving Los Angeles police using flashlights as weapons have been reported.

This year, promoted the website thinkuknow.co.uk.
The site warns against the dangers of paedophiles and provides information on how children can stay safe online. voiceover said: "Giving out personal info could let a paedophile track you down. Be smart online, be safe offline. Visit thinkuknow.co.uk."
The complainant says that when she visited the site, which she thought was spelt "thinkyouknow.co.uk", she found links to adult websites which included pornography.

"It's like a social experiment to test how tolerant people are, the " Bible and the Quran -- put on display by the Penn State Atheist and Agnostic Association, of which Jackson (senior-anthropology) is president.
