“Matter Fisher” is a fascinating animated short film by English animator David Prosser, which was honored with a 2011 BAFTA nomination in the Short Animation category. The animation made its online debut this week; the film captures the expressive nature of sketching and combines it with the environmental depth of 3D. It tells the story of a serendipitous journey in which a fisherman is united with a form of estranged matter. The lone fisherman happens upon a ravenous pebble-sized ball of matter that absorbs anything within reach. The more it consumes, the larger and stronger it grows. We witness man’s desire to exploit the power of nature for his own greed, while ignorantly driving it to ultimate destruction.
“Matter Fisher” tells its story in a way that allows events to unravel as they do in nature, rather than as they do within the structure of a standard story. At a time when physics is accelerating with results from the Large Hadron Collider, the search for the Higgs boson particle and other major theories that could redefine our universe, “Matter Fisher “explores the possible meaning of our findings in ways that are inaccessible to pure science.
This piece includes a number of black-and-white drawings, as well as the acclaimed animated short film.

“Thursday” is an immaculately designed animated short film directed by Matthias Hoegg at London’s Beakus animation studio. The fascinating animation was nominated for a 2011 British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) for Short Animation. The film is stylistically captivating, full of digitally-inspired patterns and geometric compositions that were were created in 2D and 3D to evoke a dazzling futuristic world. It presents an everyday love story set in the not so distant future, where ubiquitous electronic access doesn’t necessarily guarantee a connection, with some blackbirds battling with technology, automatic palm readers and power outages thrown into the mix.
This piece includes a number of colorful high-resolution illustrations, as well as the acclaimed animated short film.

Tonight saw the 2010 awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts take place at London’s Royal Opera House. The BBC have broadcast the ceremony since, both in the UK and on their BBC America channel though - rather appallingly - this broadcast was purposefully scheduled to not take place live but after a two hour delay. Imagine if the Oscars were broadcast in this way…!?
After the break, the full list of winners and a few tidbits about the ceremony as broadcast.
Here are the main awards as listed on the BAFTA official winner’s list - so not in show order at all.

The Television BAFTA's have been announced today with Jonathan Ross amongst the contenders.
Seeing as he took a forced 3 month leave and most people I talk to seem to think his act is wearing a bit thin these days, I don't really see how he deserves a nomination.
Amongst the people who definitely do deserve a BAFTA are:
Stephen Fry, Harry Hill, Rob Brydon and Peter Serafinowicz. The Television BAFTA's have been announced today with Jonathan Ross amongst the... more
