we did. thousands and thousands of people converged on the capitol power plant, engaging in mass civil disobedience to shut it down for the afternoon, sending a national demand for clean energy solutions for all our communities across the country. thought it would be a fitting ending to Acting Up to see the victory declaration. check it out.
Its the morning of our protest, and there is a blizzard outside. People are asking if its still on. IT IS! Just means we tell our grandkids about trudging uphill in both directions in ten inches of snow....and thats one of the reasons why they live in a healthy and safe world, with clean energy, climate justice, and self determined communities. Its the morning of our protest, and there is a blizzard outside. We're about to shape a clean energy economy in this country in 4 days with the largest civil disobedience on climate in us history, the capitol climate action.

We're fighting to solve the climate crisis and create millions of green jobs and build a clean energy economy. But what happens when our protest directly disrupts the jobs of people who work at the coal plant?
Deepa, Amanda and I run a training for the Greenpeace Organizing Term students to prepare them for the Capitol Climate Action (CCA) - the largest demonstration to solve the climate crisis in history. While our message is national and not about this specific power plant, thousands will be engaging in civil disobedience, disrupting the coal plant that powers Congress for the afternoon, which does mean we will inconvenience people who work there.
We help train students to respect workers, de-escalate confrontation, and recognize that many of the participants in the action work in the coal industry. We're on the side of the workers, and fighting for a cleaner future together, so we need to make sure that we do a good job of treating people well.
So what does it actually mean to have the "biggest demonstration to solve the climate crisis in history"? Why do it? What are we actually doing? What does civil disobedience in this context look like?
..because you really wanna see two shirtless whiteboys, Scott and I get naked and answer these questions and more, talking about how mass-actions led by directly impacted people can help stop global warming and jumpstart our economy with clean energy.
So what do yall think of escalation? Is the movement ready for it? Is it useful? How is change made?So what does it actually mean to have the "biggest demonstration to solve the climate... more
I answer a question about the value of mass protest and risking arrest, and move on to talk about community organizing, and how the two reinforce one another. Then we move on to head to a meeting for Global Justice Action, rant a little bit about corporations cashing in on the rhetoric of change that is electrifying the country, and talk about how the conversations in classrooms, town halls, community centers, and church basements, paired with the 1000+ people who are being trained for this action is really what is going to propel the movement forward beyond whatever political will and leverage we are able to create on the Hill for strong climate change policy.

Shadia and I give a quick run-down of the current banner and placard messages our media team is thinking about for the Capitol Climate Action (CCA) - www.capitolclimateaction.org . Civil Disobedience is not our message - its just the vehicle through which we communicate what we want in the world. The point of "messaging" is to frame an issue for the general public.
Our demonstration will loudly offer urgency around these messages, which will give political leverage to our allies who that same day will be organizing many thousands of young people to lobby congress with clear policy asks around creating millions of green jobs that offer pathways out of poverty, a coal moratorium now, a carbon cap, investments in clean energy and other things that will help bring about a better world.Shadia and I give a quick run-down of the current banner and placard messages our... more
The third installment of (recently retitled) ACTING UP, a mini series of the last 11 days of organizing the largest protest to solve the climate crisis in history.
We start at the Capitol building and check out the dirty coal-fired power plant that fuels it, skip a day full of meetings, conference calls, and outreach, and move on to a quick chat before delivering a sermon at a Shabbat Service, and end up at a late night hip hop show to unwind.

Hi, my name is Joshua Kahn Russell. Right now I'm helping to coordinate the largest protest on Global Warming in history.
I'm an organizer, which means I spend my time building power of regular folks to take control of their lives and communities. I've spent half my life helping to bridge movements for racial justice and the environment.
Current TV asked me to record my life for 2 minutes a day. The series is gonna be called the "ACTING UP", so search for that tag if you want.
Our protest is called the Capitol Climate Action - CCA (www.capitolclimateaction.org), and will bring thousands to risk arrest in civil disobedience at the Capitol Coal Plant that powers our congress with dirty energy.
We have a coalition of over 70 conservation, public health, labor, social & racial justice, faith-based, environmental and other advocacy groups, along with figures like NASA Climatologist Dr. James Hansen, and advocates like Vandana Shiva, Wendell Berry and Bill Mckibben who will be joining us and sitting in.
We can't afford to wait any longer for the slow gears of the political process, while our economy tanks and the planet burns. I believe now is the time for bold action that communicates a message of urgency.
We have written and testified and organized politically. Now is the time to do more for the health of our communities and our planet. There are moments in a nation's--and a planet's--history when it may be necessary for some to break the law in order to bear witness to an evil and push for its correction. Such a time has arrived.
Join me for the next 11 days in the build up to the largest civil disobedience for climate justice in history. It's gonna be a wild ride.Hi, my name is Joshua Kahn Russell. Right now I'm helping to coordinate the largest... more
