We Let You Loan to the Working Poor
Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.
Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs around the globe.
The people you see on Kiva's site are real individuals in need of funding - not marketing material. When you browse entrepreneurs' profiles on the site, choose someone to lend to, and then make a loan, you are helping a real person make great strides towards economic independence and improve life for themselves, their family, and their community. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates and track repayments. Then, when you get your loan money back, you can relend to someone else in need.
Kiva partners with existing expert microfinance institutions. In doing so, we gain access to outstanding entrepreneurs from impoverished communities world-wide. Our partners are experts in choosing qualified entrepreneurs. That said, they are usually short on funds. Through Kiva, our partners upload their entrepreneur profiles directly to the site so you can lend to them. When you do, not only do you get a unique experience connecting to a specific entrepreneur on the other side of the planet, but our microfinance partners can do more of what they do, more efficiently.
Kiva provides a data-rich, transparent lending platform. We are constantly working to make the system more transparent to show how money flows throughout the entire cycle, and what effect it has on the people and institutions lending it, borrowing it, and managing it along the way. To do this, we are using the power of the internet to facilitate one-to-one connections that were previously prohibitively expensive. Child sponsorship has always been a high overhead business. Kiva creates a similar interpersonal connection at much lower costs due to the instant, inexpensive nature of internet delivery. The individuals featured on our website are real people who need a loan and are waiting for socially-minded individuals like you to lend them money. We Let You Loan to the Working Poor

Many are spinning Arlen Specters switch as an effort to gain votes, at a time when we are just starting with a new administration and a new Senate. That’s spin! Senator Specter was unwilling to be part of the ‘do nothing’ Republicans.
The only way Republicans will allow bipartisan politics is for the Republican who is willing to cooperate, is to leave their party. The party of no!
“There have been many commissions in recent years, but the problems which we are now confronting warrant a fresh look,” Senator Specter said. “This commission has the potential to really make some very significant advances in public security and protection from the violent criminals. I look forward to working with Senator Webb and my colleagues in the Senate on this important legislation.”
The high-level commission created by the National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009 legislation will be comprised of experts in fields including criminal justice, law enforcement, public heath, national security, prison administration, social services, prisoner reentry, and victims’ rights. It will be led by a chairperson to be appointed by the President. The Majority and Minority Leaders in the House and Senate, and the Democratic and Republican Governors Associations will appoint the remaining members of the commission.
Commissioners will be tasked with proposing tangible, wide-ranging reforms designed to responsibly reduce the overall incarceration rate; improve federal and local responses to international and domestic gang violence; restructure our approach to drug criminalization; improve the treatment of mental illness; improve prison administration; and establish a system for reintegrating ex-offenders.Many are spinning Arlen Specters switch as an effort to gain votes, at a time when we... more

My goodness, this sounds like a step in the right direction. Warmed my heart to read it. Kudos to Jim Webb and those who plan to assist him in investigating facts. Maybe we can get back to being a country, which respects facts. Having 'Leaders' who respect facts.
Sen. Jim Webb, fresh off his passage of an historic expansion of the GI Bill, has found a new issue: the criminal justice system. And when Webb, a Virginia Democrat, sets his legislative sites on a priority, his colleagues pay attention.
On Thursday, Webb, along with the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), introduced a bill to create a commission that would undertake an 18-month study of the criminal justice system and come back with legislative recommendations.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, Webb said that everything should be considered. And he means everything.
"I think everything should be on the table, and we specifically say that we want recommendations on how to deal with drug policy in our country. And we'll get it to the people who have the credibility and the expertise and see what they come up with," said Webb.
What about legalizing, taxing and regulating marijuana?
Webb paused. "I think they should do a very careful examination of all aspects of drug policy. I've done a couple of very extensive hearings on this, so we'll wait to see what they say about that," he said.
So it's on the table? Webb flashed a wry grin, laughing mischievously. My goodness, this sounds like a step in the right direction. Warmed my heart to read... more

We can make over 25,000 things with it. Farmers love it. Environmentalists love it. You can't get high from it. So why is it still illegal?
With 25,000 known applications from paper, clothing and food products -- which, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal this January, is the fastest growing new food category in North America -- to construction and automotive materials, hemp could be just the crop to jump-start America's green economy.
Life is not a dress rehearsal, this is the only life we are going to get. Facts matter! Kicking the facts down the road, isn't helping anyone. These are not new facts, they are hidden facts. Facts hidden from ordinary Amerians. Instead of chuckling, I 'hope' people start educating themselves. Facts should matter. Truth should win over spin!We can make over 25,000 things with it. Farmers love it. Environmentalists love it.... more

US President Barack Obama today encouraged Americans to submit their questions about the economy over the Internet and said he will answer some of them live on the White House website on Friday.
"This is an experiment, but it's also an opportunity for me to look at a computer and get a snapshot of what Americans across the country care about," Mr Obama said in a video message on the website.
The session will be a first for the White House, which has promised under Mr Obama to use technology to make government more accountable.
Participants will be able to ask their own questions via text and video and vote for those they would like to see answered the most.
Mr Obama's staff used a similar "community moderated" approach before he took office to compile a list of issues that Americans cared about the most.
Topping that list was a request to legalize marijuana.
I would like to see "Why aren't we utilizing industrial hemp?" top the list this time.
Hemp has so many uses, which should be explored and utilized. Why would we ignore the positive qualities of hemp? It doesn’t make sense. Hemp is 100% biodegradable and can be used to make so many environmentally friendly products. During hemps growth period, it is busy removing toxins from our air. When it is processed it could replace many items which are being used today that do not biodegrade. Our oceans are polluted with plastic. Things need to change.
I recommend everyone visit http://current.com/users/JackHerer/all/0.htm and take a look at the treasure trove of posts about cannabis hemp. I would like to see submissions asking, "Why aren't we utilizing industrial hemp?" Then supply him with facts. Facts matter!
Americans need industry and jobs. Farmers need new crops. Investors need investment opportunities in green industry. We need cannabis taken off the Dangerous Substance List. We should be free to explore the many uses of cannabis hemp.US President Barack Obama today encouraged Americans to submit their questions about... more
