The crossing at Abbey Road, famous for the cover of one of The Beatles albums, has been rewarded Grade II listed status by English Heritage.
While the crossing may've moved several meters from the original location 30 years ago, it became popular with tourists worldwide. Minister for Tourism and Heritage John Penrose, told the BBC "This London zebra crossing is no castle or cathedral but, thanks to the Beatles and a 10-minute photo-shoot one August morning in 1969, it has just as strong a claim as any to be seen as part of our heritage."

EMI has put the iconic Abbey Road Studios up for sale in order to pay down the debt burden resulting from venture capitalist Terra Firma's leveraged buyout of the music group in 2007. EMI purchased the townhouse at 3 Abbey Road in 1929 for £100,000, and created the world's first custom-built recording studios.
While in demand by top musicians the world over, the studios at Abbey Road were best known for recording the Beatles' last and perhaps best studio album, 'Abbey Road'. The final mix on August 20, 1969, was the last day all four band members were together in a studio. The album topped the charts for months around the world, ultimately selling over 30 million copies globally.
Pink Floyd also recorded 'Dark Side of the Moon' there, which went on to sell 45 million copies around the world.EMI has put the iconic Abbey Road Studios up for sale in order to pay down the debt... more

London, England (FT) -- Abbey Road, the London recording studios immortalized by the Beatles album of the same name, has been put on the market by EMI as the music group looks to extricate itself from the debt burden of Terra Firma's 2007 leveraged buy-out.
EMI would not comment but five people familiar with the situation told the Financial Times it had been courting bidders for the property in St John's Wood. A sale could raise tens of millions of pounds.
It was not immediately clear whether EMI would sell the Abbey Road brand name along with the property, but one media lawyer said: "The brand is worth more than the building... anybody who wants the studios will want the brand."
EMI bought the house at number 3 Abbey Road for £100,000 ($160,000) in 1929 and transformed it into the world's first custom-built recording studios.
In 1931, Sir Edward Elgar used studio one to record Land of Hope and Glory with the London Symphony Orchestra and by World War II Abbey Road was used for propaganda recordings for the British government and BBC radio broadcasts.
The Beatles put the studios on the map, using it for 90 percent of their recordings between 1962 and 1969 and naming their final album Abbey Road. EMI used the studios for last year's release of remastered Beatles albums.
Pink Floyd recorded Dark Side of the Moon at the studios, which have also been used by Radiohead, the Manic Street Preachers, Travis and Blur.
However, the studios have faced cheaper competition from recording facilities in other countries, and technological advances allowing artists to record using only a laptop computer have made it harder for labels to justify owning expensive recording infrastructure.
"What you have is a very, very expensive piece of heritage. If an artist goes to a label and asks to record at Abbey Road they will be met with maniacal laughter," the media lawyer said.
Abbey Road is still prized as one of the few venues able to accommodate entire orchestras, which has allowed producers to record scores there for films such as Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
EMI has worked to exploit the Abbey Road brand name in recent years, launching a service called Abbey Road Live last November that offers fans the chance to buy instant concert recordings at venues.
Depending on the level of offers it attracts, a sale could bolster EMI's finances at a time when Terra Firma is seeking £120M ($188M) from investors by June to avoid breaching covenants on £3.3B ($5.17B) of loans from Citigroup. However, it is unlikely that the proceeds would arrive in time or be large enough to help significantly with that deadline.http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/02/16/article-1251416-05FEAA58000005DC-20_468x472.j... more

LONDON (AP) -- Hundreds of Beatles fans swarmed Abbey Road on Saturday, singing songs and snarling traffic to mark 40 years since John, Paul, George and Ringo strode across the leafy north London street and into the history books on iconic pop photos.
The famous photo graced the cover of the Fab Four's "Abbey Road," the last album recorded together, and shows the bandmates walking purposefully across the zebra-striped asphalt.
It remains one of music's best-known album covers, endlessly imitated and parodied. Although the shoot itself only took a few minutes, so carefully studied was the cover for signs and symbolism that some die-hard fans came to the conclusion that Paul McCartney - who appears barefoot and out of step with the rest - had secretly died.
McCartney himself made fun of the bizarre conspiracy in the title of his 1993 concert album, "Paul is Live."
Conspiracies aside, the ease with which fans can imitate the scene has drawn throngs of tourists to the site every day, turning the street into "a shrine to the Beatles," said Richard Porter, who owns the nearby Beatles Coffee Shop and organized Saturday's event.
Crowds spilled into the street, cameramen jostled for angles, and exasperated drivers honked their horns.
"I didn't expect so many people to be here," said German visitor Tschale Haas, 50, who was dressed in a Sgt. Pepper jacket.
Abbey Road, which cuts through London's well-to-do neighborhood of St. John's Wood, is home to the eponymous studios where the group recorded much of its work.
The group decided to shoot the photograph in August 1969 while recording music for the last time together. For the shot, photographer Iain Macmillan stood on a stepladder and police held up traffic while the Beatles walked back and forth across the street.
The enduring popularity of the site has caused headaches for local authorities, who have had to move the Abbey Road street sign up out of reach to prevent theft and repaint the wall every three months to hide fans' graffiti.By RAPHAEL G. SATTER
