In the Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay Division, we’ve got 3rd seed Coldplay vs 14th seed Creaky Boards. Honestly, I like Creaky Boards, and they probably don’t deserve to be labeled as a band that ripped off Coldplay. In fact, they accused Coldplay ripping off their ironically title track “Songs I didn’t Write.” And yes, you heard me right, Coldplay is the number three seed in the Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay Division. Figure it out.In the Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay Division, we’ve got 3rd seed Coldplay vs... more

Yesterday we had our first upset. In the Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off Division, number 15 seed Joe Satriani knocked off number 2 seed U2 7-4. I guess lifting one song directly from Satriani was enough to make up for being completely derivative of U2 for years.
And over in the Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay division. Mat Kearney blanked Parlotones 5-0.Yesterday we had our first upset. In the Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off Division,... more

Today’s game in the Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay Division pits (2) Mat Kearney vs (15) Parlotones. Mat Kearney sounds so much like Chris Martin it ought to be a crime. Really. For several reasons. The Parlotones are a South African band, and their song “Funny Face” is so annoying that it makes me think Nelson Mandela should go back to jail just to get away from them.

In the Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off Division, we’ve got a big game today. It’s (2) U2 vs (15) Joe Satriani. Coldplay tries so hard to sound like U2 that we couldn’t pick just one song, so the clip we’re using is a retrospective of their career. Guitar god Joe Satriani is a force to be reckoned with too. As we all know claims to have written Viva La Vida, to which Coldplay responded, “yeah, get in line.”
Watch both the clips below and vote in the comment section. The band that gets the most votes will move on to the next round. In the Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off Division, we’ve got a big game today.... more

2009 Coldplay-Off Update
Day two is over and it was a close one. In the Bands Coldplay Ripped Off division, (4) Radiohead squeaked by (13) Kraftwerk 8-6. Radiohead will move onto the next round, but Kraftwerk still gets our respect for bringing together two of the most unmelodic things: Germans and early 80’s computers, and still making beautiful music.
In the Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay, (4) Mitch Benn topped (13) Embrace 6-3, even though Douglas tried to vote for Embrace 20 times. People, we have clearly stated, if you want to vote more than once, you have to use more than one screen name.

Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay: (4) Mitch Benn vs (13) Embrace
Number 4 seed Mitch Benn has a great take on everybody sounding like Coldplay, and has a real chance of winning his division, but 13 seed Embrace has an advantage too: Chris Martin wrote their song "Gravity," and they sounds just like Coldplay-- not a little-- exactly like them. And that freaks me out because I think Chris Martin is trying to franchise the band so they can play multiple venues in the same night, like Midget Kiss.
The videos are below. Vote in the comments section and whomever receives the most votes will move on to the next round.

PS: If you're a big Embrace fan and want to tell me they've been around longer than Coldplay and they are all "mates," that's fine, but it doesn't change the fact that they lifted the Coldplay sound a few years ago.Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay: (4) Mitch Benn vs (13) Embrace

Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off: (4) Radiohead vs. (13) Kraftwerk
Oh my God! (long hand for emphasis) It’s Radiohead vs. Kraftwerk. What a game! It’s like watching your buddy fist fight his dad… or his step dad… who raised him from a young age. Sure Radiohead seems like the easy favorite, considering Coldplay is essentially “Radiohead for Dummies” but don’t forget that Chris Martin and company lifted the riff from Kraftwerk’s “Computer Love” for their song “Talk.”

Day one of the 2009 Coldplay-Off is in the history books, and it was a big one. In the Bands that Codplay Ripped Off Division, (1) the Beatles crushed (16) Coldplay 33-2. Yes, two people voted for Coldplay, but we’re not overlooking the fact that they might have just misspelled “the Beatles” by eight letters.
In the Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay Division, (1) Blue Merle blanked (16) Leeland 16-0. However, Blue Merle was almost disqualified when part way through the game, their youtube video suddenly forbid embedding. Thank God for Imeem, or the Blue Merle would have been DQ’d, and would never have received free press from us again.
Two big match-ups today: In the Bands that Coldplay Ripped Off Division, (4) Radiohead takes on (13) Kraftwerk and in the Bands that Ripped Off Coldplay Division we have (4) Mitch Benn vs (13) Embrace.Day one of the 2009 Coldplay-Off is in the history books, and it was a big one. In the... more

March Madness is under way, and we’re all about co-opting your excitement, so we’ve created our own tournament. The 2009 Coldplay-off! We’ve taken 16 bands that sound like they ripped off Coldplay, and 16 legendary bands that sound like Coldplay ripped them off, and we’re pitting them against each other.
Monday morning, we’re posting our official bracket. Then everyday there will be two games: one pitting two of the world’s best bands that Coldplay ripped off (think Radiohead or U2) against each other, and one matching up two of the world’s worst Coldplay spawns (think the Fray or Snowpatrol—but don’t think it for long). Then you vote for the winner in the comment section, and as far as I know, there’s no rule against using multiple screen names, so vote early, and vote often. It all starts this Monday!March Madness is under way, and we’re all about co-opting your excitement, so... more
