You may be wondering how Sam Raimi's genre film got to Cannes...here's his take on it.
"Sam Raimi, who directed the horror film Drag Me to Hell, told reporters that he's as surprised as anyone that his modest movie will play at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Raimi even joked about tarnishing the luster of the prestigious festival.
"I'm super-surprised that the Cannes Film Festival wanted the picture," Raimi said in a group interview on Monday in Beverly Hills, Calif. "I think it says a lot about the depravity in our society. It's very disappointing in many ways. No, I'm kidding."
Lorna Raver, who plays the gypsy woman who curses a loan officer (Alison Lohman) foreclosing on her house, said she has done her research to prepare for Cannes. "Yeah, I looked up their site this morning to see what's going on over there, so I know what to expect," Raver said in a separate interview. "That's endlessly cool."
Getting serious, Raimi explained how the genre film landed at Cannes. "Universal Pictures said, 'Oh, we should show this to the Cannes viewing committee,'" Raimi said. "I don't know what it's called. At the time, I just didn't think that was a good idea, but I didn't want to say anything. Then I was really surprised when they accepted the picture."
Raver added that the trip to France is likely to be all business. "I mean, I have never been, and we're going to be very busy," she said. "We're not going to have a lot of time, so we'll be at the screening and a lot of press and stuff. We're not going to have time to play around on the beach much, I don't think. It'll just be fascinating to see the scene."
