The Galaxy Dress is the centerpiece for an exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry and was designed by Francesca Rosella and Ryan Genz. Using the smallest full-color LEDs available, the paper-thin LED fabric possesses the characteristics of normal fabric, allowing it to stretch and move fluidly.

Sweatshoppe, a group of multimedia performers, has taken some novel LED technology to the streets to create a new form of street art. The group uses video mapping techniques to make it appear as through an artist is using a standard paint roller to “paint” on walls. In actuality, the artist isn’t putting anything on the walls.

A number of cold weather American states are reporting their dismay at finding out that LED traffic lights are so energy efficient that they do not produce enough excess heat to dissipate any snow that covers them. It turns out, perhaps in an homage to bad engineering everywhere, that the inefficiency of incandescent light bulbs was previously relied upon to keep traffic signals unimpeded. The new LEDs do not achieve the same effect, which has resulted in a few accidents and even a death being blamed on obstructed traffic lights. Feel free to apply palm to face now. It's not all gloomy, though, as the majority of people are said to treat a dysfunctional traffic light as a stop sign (how clever of them), and a tech fix is being worked on as we speak.

If there's one thing we love about DIY projects, it's the feeling that the outcome is more than the mere sum of its parts. This here binary clock is a prime example, being composed of scrap plastic, some dirt-cheap parts and a homemade Arduino board.
And yet, after a few licks of polish and the inevitable LEDs, it looks like a true monument to geekdom, which is only amplified by the fact you can't even use the thing without being familiar with binary code. But then again, if utility was a standard by which we judged homebrewed projects, we'd have a lot less to talk about. If there's one thing we love about DIY projects, it's the feeling that the... more

A USB microscope sounds interesting. Probably because it's a gadget that can be used to photograph and video-record, places you can't get to up-close and personal.
The Thanko USB microscope has six LEDs and a minscule CMOS camera, which can capture photos in 640 × 480 resolution or video in 1,280 × 1,024. The captured images/footage can instantly be uploaded to your computer.
The image below shows a guy using it to check out his teeth, which is a sensible idea, however i think once this hits the market, some people are going to take this self-examination a little thing too far.A USB microscope sounds interesting. Probably because it's a gadget that can be... more

For some time now, we’ve been touting the benefits of LED lights - and celebrating their increased availability for standard residential applications. Heck, even their increased adoption for non-residential applications - as in the case of the Clinton Foundation’s retrofit of all of Los Angeles’ streetlights.
Turns out, though, there’s another benefit of LEDs, particularly relevant in the summertime: they don’t attract bugs. Yes, you read that right: the LEDs that you can have in your house, right now, won’t attract bugs. So picture the moths bouncing off your windows all night as you sit at the kitchen table, the mosquitoes buzzing around the chandelier, and the (gross) little black dots in your overhead fixtures, etc etc, and then picture them gone…
Here’s why: Most insects are actually attracted to the ultraviolet rays (light with a wavelength of between 400 and 320 nanometers) emitted by conventional light sources. Conveniently, LEDs just happen to emit almost no light in this range.
Just in case long life, low electricity consumption, beautiful light quality, and cool-factor aren’t enough, here’s another addition to your growing list of reasons to switch to LED lighting. For some time now, we’ve been touting the benefits of LED lights - and... more

Yet again another concept design I have come across, this time it's for trucks. The Scania truck concept is a futuristic, eco-friendly design by Adam Palethorpe, who aims to give trucks a whole new demeanor on the road.
Challenging the original perception of trucks as having harsh-to-the-eye exteriors and aggressive drivers, the Scania concept shows the truck with a smooth white coating and demonstrates its diesel-electric hybrid engine, giving it that environmentally friendly appeal.
However, the futuristic element of the concept does not just lie in the visual and eco-friendly aspect of the truck, but more-so with the wheel technology. The colour-coded LEDs installed over the wheels, help indicate the speeding habits of the driver (See first reply below for closer look).

Researchers at Cambridge University have developed an LED light bulb that’s twelve times more efficient than average bulbs, lights up instantly, lasts for 100,000 hours and only costs three bucks. The LED bulb could lower an average energy bill by as much as three quarters. Researchers also managed not to use any toxic materials in the manufacturing process.Researchers at Cambridge University have developed an LED light bulb that’s... more

Combining the popularity of LED lighting with the primal instinct to keep one’s hair dry has finally made umbrellas kind of cool. Lovingly referred to across the web as the “Light Saber Umbrella”, it’s just like a traditional umbrella but instead of an ordinary, boring handle we get a colorful, glowing handle comprised of LED lights giving it a light saber effect.Combining the popularity of LED lighting with the primal instinct to keep one’s... more
