Former NOM strategist now supports same-sex marriage

"Having spent the last five years putting all of my political will, interest and energy into fighting against the spread of same-sex marriage as if it were a contagious disease, I must admit that it is hard for me to put the following text into words let alone utter them with my own voice.

Whether it is an issue of disbelief, shame or embarrassment, the one thing that is for sure is that I have come to this point after several months of an internal conflict with myself. That conflict gradually tore away at me until recently when I was able to for the first time simply admit to myself that I do in fact support civil marriage equality.

While I have come to terms with this reality internally, speaking about it, even with the closest members of my family, has proven to be something difficult for me to do.

In short, if there is an issue of disbelief surrounding my newfound support for civil marriage equality, it is disbelief from those who surround me. If there is an issue of shame, it is a result of acknowledging the number of people I have targeted, hurt and oppressed. And if there is an issue of embarrassment, its roots lie in the face-to-face encounters I have had and expect to have with those with whom I once toiled over this very contentious issue.

I understand that those whom I approach now are well within their right to disbelieve and question me and my motives. I accept that is the result of what I have done over the past few years and would therefore like to take this time to, as openly as I can, discuss the events that brought about my change of heart.

As you may already know, I was the one behind the 2010 Summer for Marriage Tour which the National Organization for Marriage sponsored and operated throughout July and August last year. It was my doing when, in March that year, I approached Brian Brown, then Executive Director of the National Organization for Marriage about sponsoring and participating in a series of traditional marriage rallies scattered around the Nation.

In fact, the tour route itself, while chosen largely by NOM itself, incorporated as many of the sites I had originally chosen and helped independently organize. Other locations were added due to strategic, political or simply logistical purposes.

Ironically, one of the last tour stops added to the itinerary was Atlanta and I bring this site up because it was in Atlanta that I can remember that I questioned what I was doing for the first time. The NOM showing in the heart of the Bible-belt was dismal and the hundreds of counter-protesters who showed up were nothing short of inspiring.

Even though I had been confronted by the counter-protesters throughout the marriage tour, the lesbian and gay people whom I made a profession out of opposing became real people for me almost instantly. For the first time I had empathy for them and remember asking myself what I was doing..."

NOM Exposed by HRC, Courage Campaign

NOM Exposed, a website launched Tuesday by the Human Rights Campaign and the Courage Campaign, reveals the antigay affiliations of the National Organization for Marriage, discloses its substantial financial resources and provides a dynamic space for activists to fight back.

Based on months of analysis and research drawn from public records, NOM Exposed was created to lay bare what the Washington, D.C.-based organization itself tries to hide through lawsuits like its recent challenges to disclosure laws in Rhode Island, New York and Florida. The site reveals the deep-pocketed donors, such as the Catholic Church and the Mormon Church, who have helped the organization amass almost $10 million in the three years it burst onto the scene with the Proposition 8 battle in California. NOM Exposed also monitors the organization’s current campaigns to defeat equality in states including but not limited to California, New Hampshire, New York, Minnesota, and Iowa.

“NOM has become the leading anti-equality force in this country seemingly overnight,” said Fred Sainz, vice president of communications for HRC, in a conference call with reports Tuesday afternoon. “They’ve thrived on voters knowing nothing about them or who fuels them.”

Among the findings of NOM Exposed, according to a news release from HRC and the Courage Campaign:

- At a time of the country's greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, NOM's financial growth has been explosive. NOM has amassed huge resources – estimated to reach or exceed $10M in 2010 – from modest beginnings in 2007.

- NOM is a highly secretive organization that tries to not only hide the identity of its political donors from the voting public in state after state, but operates in a way to discourage people from knowing who its key players and associates are.

- NOM has deep connections to the Catholic Church hierarchy, to the Mormon Church, to evangelical right-wing pastors and churches and to those who have a long history of anti-gay rhetoric and activity. These are individuals and organizations which not only oppose same-sex marriage, but oppose domestic partnerships, civil unions, hate crimes protections and even fertility treatments for women because some of those women could be lesbians.

- Since 2008, NOM and its allies have engaged in a radical, nationwide plan to flout long-established campaign finance disclosure laws. This is nothing short of a strategic, coordinated plan to hide NOM's political activities from voters. This summer’s news has focused on two hot issues: new concerns about a double-dip recession and Judge Vaughn Walker’s decision overturning California’s Proposition 8. In a jarring display of confused facts and logic, the National Organization for Marriage’s antigay tour has brought those two issues together.

On the recent Iowa stop of the NOM tour, Concerned Women for America spokesperson Tamara Scott laid the blame for the social cost of “fragmented families” at the feet of allegedly unstable gay couples raising children. “It costs you, the taxpayer, as high as $280 billion a year for fragmented families,” she warned the (small) group at the rally. Her argument suggested that one way to help the struggling economy would be to stop the formation of the fragmented gay families that are doing harm to themselves, their children, and U.S. taxpayers by their mere existence. In essence, she’s arguing that stopping gay marriage in Iowa could help the economy.

That logic turns the actual relationship between marriage equality and the economy upside down. For one thing, many gay couples want the right to marry because they see marriage as a way to enhance their commitment to each other. So having the right to marry would actually increase the likelihood that same-sex couples would stay together (with or without kids), just as marriage does for different-sex couples. If stability saves taxpayers money, then taxpayers should favor marriage equality.

More to the point, giving gay couples the right to marry would have a direct positive effect on the economy in many ways. More than 20 studies of marriage equality's impact on state and federal budgets have unanimously concluded that those budgets would see a boost. The Congressional Budget Office, budget analysts in New York, Connecticut, and Vermont, as well as studies by the Williams Institute, all agree that marriage equality would save states money—which most states desperately need in this economy.

Businesses would also gain from the weddings of same-sex couples. Our research finds that gay and lesbian couples spend thousands of dollars on their weddings, and those celebrations draw people from out-of-state to spend even more. We estimate that Massachusetts businesses got a boost of more than $100 million in the first few years of gay couples’ weddings. Most of the beneficiaries are small businesses that are really feeling the economic pinch, including photographers, wedding planners, caterers, bakeries, and hotels. Gay marriage is helping to keep those businesses afloat in Iowa, Washington, D.C.; and New England.

In contrast to the twisted logic presented by NOM, Judge Vaughn Walker’s decision overturning Prop. 8 provides an excellent model for bringing facts into the debate about giving same-sex couples the right to marry. That trial demonstrated the economic harms of Prop 8 to gay couples and to state and local governments. Prop 8 cost California businesses hundreds of millions of dollars. Those who care about taxpayers and the health of families will find marriage equality supports both of those goals.

A supporter of the anti-gay US group National Organisation for Marriage has claimed that banning gay marriage will save states money.

The claim, which goes against most credible research, was made by Tamara Scott, Iowa's director of Concerned Women of America, at a rally in Des Moines this weekend.

She said that traditional families were being threatened by same-sex marriage, leading to costly social breakdown.

Generally, research shows that allowing same-sex marriage benefits states financially. California's gay marriage trial heard earlier this year that if more gay people married, they would increase school district revenues, real estate, payroll and sales taxes and would be more likely to be insured.

Married people are more likely to be wealthier than their unmarried counterparts and a Williams Institute study last year said that if half of all US cohabiting gay couples married, this would boost the economy by about $9.5 billion (£5.8 billion).

There is also much research to show that allowing gay people to marry can empower them, lessening rates of mental ill health and providing better environments for their children.

But Ms Scott claimed that the economic downturn could be blamed on the social costs of "traditional families" being threatened by gay marriage, the Iowa Independent reports.

Citing a study from a Washington DC-based Christian group from 2009, she said: “It costs you, the taxpayer, as high as $280 billion a year for fragmented families, according to the Family Research Council.

“If we would correct the breakdown of the family by one per cent, we could save the taxpayer $3 billion a year.

"An easy fix and a better fix long term for our children… When the family is healthy, the community benefits. When the family is hurting, society will pay the cost one way or another. We can fix this economic downturn very easily by fixing some hearts.”

At a pro-gay marriage rally in Des Moines on the same day, the claims were rubbished by Iowa first lady Mari Culver.

Ms Culver told the newspaper: “Heterosexuals have not done a great job with marriage and the family. I think a strong middle class makes a strong economy.
