I saw a sign today that made me want to run home to the internet and do a search. It was in regards to Sec. 486 M.P.C. A law which forbids the feeding of wildlife in San Francisco. This sign listed some of the wildlife and I realized that I have been in violation of this law many time, but luckily I haven't in the past 10 years so I think I'm past the statue of limitations.I saw a sign today that made me want to run home to the internet and do a search. Today, early morning, I had a dream in which I saw two queues of people lining up in front of the two doors in a building, with people depositing the belongings of their loved ones who were going to die…! I saw myself entering one of these rooms, out of sheer curiosity to know the fate of those dying…! I saw people lying on floor mats, one on each mat. I went deeper into the room and sat on a chair like seat and found myself expressing surprise to see a very small young child sitting on a chair-like structure in front of me…the child was all smiles and looking intently at me…
…Suddenly, my dream was broken. It was early morning. I was asked by one of the family members to check out if BRHMA were alive or dead, since there was no sound from its pigeon-house. I got up, rushed out and found BRHMA’s physical body lifeless…
…Clearly, BRHMA, the young pigeonlet had progressed in the cycle of evolution and left for experiencing the still higher form of the life, in all possibility to be born as a child…the child that I had seen in my dream…! The previous night I was thinking about this young pigeonlet’s safety…I reasoned - the young pigeonlet would survive despite all dangers if the Almighty wished so and It would die in spite of all our best efforts to ensure its safety if the Almighty wished it to move to higher life…So, why worry?
At first, I was bit sad as any human being would be. Then, I consoled myself by reminding myself of the dream…I chanted the Mahaamrtyunjaya hymn and prayed to the almighty to give the spiritual progression to BRHMA…With a sense of loss, I dug the grave, lowered BRHMA into it, sprinkled salt on it and covered the pit with the mud…!
The birds are said to have only three elements – THE EARTH, THE WATER, THE AIR and don’t have remaining two elements – THE FIRE, THE SKY. Hopefully, BRHMA shall now be born as a human being and achieve spiritual liberation. Yes, I saw the bright light around BRHMA’s being when I closed my eyes to find out the fate of BRHMA on the spiritual plane.Today, early morning, I had a dream in which I saw two queues of people lining up in... more

Humans first began domesticating pigeons around 5,000 to 10,000 years ago -- at first for food and to use their feathers, but later as carriers, taking advantage of their superb homing abilities to deliver messages over long distances. They were ideal couriers throughout the Ancient world, like in Greece where they reported the winners of the first Olympic Games.

Has our new definition of "life experience" rendered tangible interactions irrelevant?
May 28, 2010 |
Not so long ago, I taught a graduate writing seminar in which I got caught in an argument about virtual vs. "real" experience. Two students—among the brightest in the class—insisted that they could go to Rome via a computer program through which they could view every street, turn this corner and that as they pleased, look at every ruin and work of art, and their experience would be as real, as engaged, as if they'd actually been there. n "But," said I, "a pigeon couldn't shit on your head."
Granting that any experience can be called "real," in that it is an experience, I argued that there are differences in the nature of virtual and actual reality. For one thing, on your walk through a virtual Rome, you aren't even walking: you're sitting. And what's Rome without the wonderful smells of food? Even if your virtual Rome is accompanied by recorded sounds of Rome, that's nothing like the sounds of racket, traffic, music, and language, the melodious cacophony of Italian, spoken all around you. A flat screen gives you no sense of Rome behind you, and to the side of you. The rain won't rain on you, and you won't have to dodge crazy drivers.
You're having a one-dimensional experience, literally and figuratively. And no matter what's inputted into the program, there's no chance of running into the girl who sat next to you in high school chemistry—or anyone else. What R. D. Laing once called "the freshness and forgivingness of creation" couldn't reach out to you, nor you to it.
Your computer program couldn't include the unprogrammed, yet the unprogrammed is generally what happens during the engagement of human beings with each other, and with the world. James Baldwin's truth that "any human touch can change you" isn't available on your computer.
I said what I thought obvious: the computerized Rome couldn't give you what a Laing or a Baldwin would most value about Rome: the city as a medium for engaging life beyond personal, private acts and perceptions.
They didn't get it. My argument left them utterly unconvinced, and they looked at me bemusedly, as though I was mildly to be pitied because I didn't get it.
What separated us? Between my sense of the real and theirs gaped a chasm that I didn't understand.
What would a psychotherapist make of it? If, in your consulting room, one of these students told you that the Rome on his computer is more real than the real Rome, is that a symptom? if so, of what? Would it be a syndrome to be addressed in therapy? or just a piece of data, a reference-point for this particular client?
At around the same time, I saw related behavior that no one would connect to psychological difficulty, at least in any conventional sense.
I was driving the Southwest with a companion who'd never been there. In Arizona, on the edge of the Painted Desert, we stopped at the Petrified Forest, a vast, barren expanse of chaparral and mesas, on which lie the trunks of ancient trees turned to stone. On these trees, every detail of bark is present and vivid, yet somehow a forest has become rock. We parked at the first viewing point. My companion, without saying a word, made her way down a slope and sat. I figured she'd be there a while, absorbing this place out of sight of the road and of me, watching the Petrified Forest's stones, birds, critters, and clouds, and maybe getting bit by a bug or two—a contemplative engagement with a present terrain.

Pigeon flocks are guided by a flexible system of leadership in which almost every member gets a 'vote' but the votes of high-ranking birds carry more weight, a new study has shown.

Guest blogger Jenn Themelis brings insight to Miley Cyrus' decision to stop tweeting.
This week, prolific Tweeter Miley Cyrus deleted her very popular Twitter account.
I know. I was sad, too.
Why, why would she do such a thing? Well, Miley's been feeling overexposed, so she decided she needed to make her personal time personal. And what better way to lessen the glare of the spotlight than to make formal proclamations about how you will no longer be detailing the minutia of your life in neat 140 character slices?
You see, Miley wasn't living in the now, savoring those moments of quality time with friends and family, because she felt overwhelmingly compelled to tweet about it. We've all been there.
But this hobby turned dark, as it seems that Twitter puts you into contact with a lot of negativity, as she said in her multi-paragraph essay addressing her twit quit on her official website. Miley really just wants her "me time" to be hers again! She just wants to have some sort of 'normal' life. She stopped living for moments, and started living for people, as she said in her YouTube rap "Goodbye Twitter."
[youtube 2tSOTQPUQoU]
That's right, it's time for Miley to put Miley first!
Which inspired me to put myself first in the same fashion, so here goes: Hey world! I'm not living for you anymore! I'm doing my own thing, singing my own song (which at the moment in "Party in the USA", so fuck off! Don't judge me.)
But, I won't be a twitter quitter, because it would just be too embarrassing when I'd inevitably go back. I'm not as strong as you, Miley. I NEED to see every time Diddy tweets, "LETS GOOOO!!!!!!!!!"
Cuz it's like, damn, he must mean it if he's taking up that many characters with extras "o's" and exclamation points.
I absolutely must update the world when a pigeon brushes my head with it's disgusting wing. It's kind of like keeping a weird journal you're not that embarrassed about people seeing.
I'd like to think I'll be able to look back on my tweets in my golden years and remember, "hey, yeah, I did go to Pinkberry that one time, and it was awesome."

It appears that in South Africa at least, it may be faster to send data via an airborne carrier.
A homing pigeon with a data card attached took just an hour to travel from one office to the other situated 50 miles away, whereas in 2 hours only 4% of the file had transferred via ISP data lines. It appears that in South Africa at least, it may be faster to send data via an... more
