Steve Martin is a hugely funny guy...maybe not so on that night. Especially when talking about serious art and not doing the funny stuff he's known for. And did I mention that people paid $50 a head to listen to this --
When the interviewer read aloud a note -- from the powers that be filtering through the angry emails from viewers watching the sleep-fest on circuit TV --
the audience cheered (and I imagine did some fist pumping). The passed note suggested they talk less about the art world and more about Mr. Martin’s career.
That brings me to my recent Fiction Writing Workshop (run by the talented author Susan Breen) which ended last week. In that workshop there are about 6-8 folks sitting around a table, each week a selection of students have their pages read and then both the students and instructor offer up a selection of good points and then some suggestions for improvement. Here are some valuable words of wisdom (from Rick Bylina) -- who live by the code "The only rule: writers write! Everything else is a guideline" --
1. Absorb everything; discard nothing.
2. Learn the rules; bend them later.
3. Write, write, write; read, read, read.
4. Critic the writing; not the writer.
5. Network often; Value contacts.
6. Arrive early; depart late.
7. Experiment; do your homework.
8. Don't forget; journal daily.
9. ...and ask questions, because the only stupid question is the one not asked.-- by Rick BylinaHere are some valuable words of wisdom (from Rick Bylina) -- who live by the code... more
